Disney Quest game card?

I skimmed through several DisneyQuest threads, and all of them seem to have people proclaiming that all the rides and games are free with your admission, that the only things to pay for are food and a few items that you can purchase that you created as part of your experience (such as a drawing or music CD).

But I found this statement on the WDWINFO page about DisneyQuest.

You pay one price for access to Disney Quest for the entire day, and you are free to leave and return. (The only exception is if you decide to play the games where prizes are awarded. The purchase of a game card is required.)

What's the story with the game card? What games use it, and how much does each play cost?

There are a few "claw" type games. Those are extra. I don't know how much because we never play that stuff. They also have photo booths that are extra.

I don't think they are still there but there was a room that had the kind of games that Chuckie Cheese has where you get tickets based on your score like Ski Ball and the like. You then redeemed the tickets for cheap toys.

Like I said above pretty sure those are gone or you just don't get tickets anymore so no more cheap toys.

The only games that require you to pay extra are claw games. There are also some photo booths, but that is really it. And you'd use regular cash for these, I'm pretty sure.

DisneyQuest once ran on game cards (I searched DisneyQuest and found this out). They were much like the ones at Dave and Busters but when they changed the plan to one admission price and unlimited play, the area for card sliding started to disappear. It was basically just having a card filled with money(or credits paid for by money) and whenever you slid it at a game, some of the credit on the card would go towards the game. Then when you ran out you could reload it again later by adding more money. I personally don't like game cards (or at least the ones at a local aracde/party place) because they expire and you lose all the credit, and wouldn't be able to use it again later.

But DQ no longer uses game cards.

Here's an article about it from Wikipedia:
When DisneyQuest was first opened it had a lower admission fee but each attraction and game required a player to swipe a card to pay "credits" for it, and the card could be "recharged" by putting it and some money into a recharging station, similar to Dave & Buster's gaming restaurants. Within a few years this was changed to a single flat fee for entry, and the cards and readers were no longer used. The card readers continued to be used for a few years as means to insert credits (the card readers were set to free mode, and pressing the green "OK" button would insert a credit), but as new games moved in and old ones were retired, the card readers began to vanish as the machines were simply set to free play within the games themselves and, while a few can still be found, they are incredibly scarce today, and have all been disabled completely.

When we went in 1999 they had already eliminated the cards but they were kind of still around. They handed you one to do Cyber Space mountain because the card is how they linked up the coaster you designed with the simulator.

Also they used them for the redemption games I wrote about above. I'm not sure when they got rid of the redemption games.

I was just there in December. Everything we did was free (and we did all the "big ticket" games). The claw games with prizes were extra but all the arcade-style games were free.

So do they still have ski-ball? But it is free? No more tickets and prizes, right?

We are looking to take DS (9) there this summer. Can I get some insite on what you actually do there... is it just a big arcade? Are my mom and I going to be totally board while DS & DH have a blast?

bigAWL, thanks for the link. It really helped. It is nice to know my mom and I can participate with DS, it looks fun.
Does anyone know if you can leave and go back in the same day? I thought I read that somewhere. It would be nice to be able to go there in afternoon, eat somewhere in Downtown Disney & then go back for awhile in evening.

Yes you can leave and come back like at any park.
