Disney Premier Visa Card

Why do some people pay the $49 initial annual fee and others don't?

There are two versions of the Disney Visa now. The original card has no annual fee but you only earn 1% on all purchases.

The new Disney Premier Visa has a $49 annual fee but you earn 2% on Disney purchases, groceries, gas and restaurants.

Chase offered a lot of promotions lately for people either signing up for new Premier Cards or upgrading from the original card (for upgrading, I am receiving 5% back in the special categories instead of 2% for the first 3 months).
For people getting a new account, they are being offered either $100 or $200 gift card but not the 5% for the first three months.

It really depends on how you use the card. If you are just using it everyonce in a while or saving it for emergencies then it makes no sense at all to have a card with a fee. But if you do like I am doing and using to buy everyday items then it makes total sense. When I started looking at how much I was spending on things like Gas, and Groceries (and resteraunts but we have stopped eating out except for the occasional meal maybe once a month) it just makes sense to have the anual fee and get more rewards. We will get more rewards after the paying the anual fee using the card this way then we would if we had the no fee card that gives 1% back. There may not be a big difference between 1 and 2 percent when you look at the short term but if we (family of 3) are spending anywhere between 700 and 1000 dollars a month on groceries well thats 20 bucks a month we get back as opposed to 10. After just 3 months we have paid the annual fee and the other 9 months we make about 180 bucks back. With the non fee you would get 120 bucks for the same spending (assuming you spend 1000 on groceries a month which I used just as a round number). So I make 60 extra bucks a year over someone without the premium card in this example as long as I pay it off every month. If you dont pay it off every month then it wont benefit you at all as you will lose money paying interest.

Its all about how you manage your money. If done right then the card can be very beneficial even with the fee. But it (for me atleast) means I have to be very careful about what I spend and make sure I dont spend more than I can afford with my budget.

And apparently there is a Premier Disney Visa Deal deal out there where the initial $49 annual fee is waived, and you pay the $49 annually starting the 2nd year. boscoj got that deal.

Yep got the first year waived when I upgraded. The Chase representative even suggested that I could go back to the original after a year if I didn't want to pay the annual fee....

That's great. On top of that $49 benefit, did you get either the 5% off for three months or any gift card/statement credit? I know you said earlier you didn't get the $200 gift card, but just wondering if you got any gift card/statement credit beyond the $49.
