Shutting down the hot tubs too? Ah, crap. I suppose you can't have the tubs outside the fences, but still.

Hmmmm that makes HH not so desirable if you had planned to take a midnight dip or soak.
Why can't it be key/magic band activated?

So, cocktails in Disney refillable mugs while sitting in the hot tub while laundry is washing and drying back in the villa is no longer an option?

I might be OK with the hot tubs being closed after the nightmare of having a villa overlooking the hot tub at BWV. People in the hot tub SHOUTING at 3 AM is a problem I don't care to have again. Yes, we reported it.

Disney extended the lifeguard hours and decided to fence the feature pools and spas after a recent drowning.

I wasn't aware they weren't fencing the leisure pools! That is good news. We had a blast sipping cocktails at the leisure pool at SSR by Congress Park. In fact, we were so impressed by the leisure pools there. I understand the fences on feature pools and if this saves a life or two it's worth the inconvenience. Just glad there is still SOMEWHERE to sip a beverage in twilight :)

I've heard this before but don't believe it. If the intent is to prevent drowning, then why are they only fencing in the feature pools?

Fences are being put up at all Disney resorts because of the tragic drowning. Likely mandated by insurance companies. I suspect that complaining to Member Services will do no good in this case. Nor can we assume that adults would actually take the responsibility to keep a close watch on their children without a lifeguard present. Feature pools are, so far, the only ones fenced, but don't be surprised to see it extended to all pools in the future.

Believe what you want, someone did recently drown and they are spending money to fence the pools and to extend the lifeguard hours. Disney doesn't spend money unless they have to.

It might be an insurance issue, a requirement due to a lawsuit, or a response to public out cry that "Disney" would let someone drown.

But they can still drown in the leisure pools. So why aren't THEY being fenced?

No slide, thus doesn't require a lifeguard. It is the pools that require life guards that are being locked when the lifeguard goes off duty.

perhaps they're planning on putting a MB reader at the gate/entrance to the pools

I heard that you will have to use MB to get in as well (probably KTTW as well of course). Interesting if they could program the various RFID readers to know which pools are off limits for hopping and specifically keep non-resort guests out, while still allowing others pool hopping privileges.

sounds like a wonderful idea to me, probably would make finding a lounger easier.

Can someone explain to me again why it is that a child might drown in the main pool, but not in the leisure pools? Is it that they are only at risk of drowning if there's a slide? Even if they have "Swim at your own risk" signs at the leisure pools, we were always taught that any good lawyer can prove those signs are meaningless. Sad to say, but kids can drown in either under the "right" (or wrong) circumstances.

This is my point exactly.

Either their logic is flawed, or there's another reason for fencing in those pools. (For example: Keeping pool hoppers out of the desirable pools)

Perhaps Florida is considering a law mandating that pools with slides be fenced at hotels? Or maybe pools of a certain size and larger? Just a guess.

And again, perhaps it is a requirement of the insurance companies.

Our liability based culture continues south. Using this argument, cars should be outlawed and we should all have to walk to Orlando. Cars kill too. While we are at it, get rid of the McDonald's on property too.

Might as well eliminate all the sodas, Beaches and Cream needs to be demolished...
