Disney/Pixar's Up

I cannot get over how Carl and Ellie from Disney/Pixar's Up have been chosen to be the stars of ShopDisney's Valentine's Day merchandise this year. And so it inspired me to look at Disney/Pixar's Up and from the clips I saw on Youtube Carl and Ellie remind me of my parents and the way that Ellie cares so much for Carl reminded me of my mom. I always wondered how the idea for Up came about? Did the writer of Up choose to base the movie on his parents life story? I find it funny that Ed Asner provided Carl's voice and I bet nobody could dream of tying balloons to their house the way Carl did in Up. Is Up one of Pixar's top rated movies or was it a flop in theaters when it first came out?
