I am looking to get my two young kids pin starter sets before our next trip in June. Looking at the Disney Store I only see a Disneyland Starter set.

Is there anyway to surprise them before our trip with a starter set (not Disneyland) or is there a way you would go about getting them started and excited before the trip without the Disneyland set? I have never pin traded and am lost where to start with the kids.

I just went through this last year. Cheapest and easiest way to do this is buy a pack of pins of Amazon, Ebay, or ones of those websites. The more you buy the cheaper it is ranging from 50 cents to $1 a pin. It's all random pins but if your trading (and they're younger) it won't matter as much.

Good luck.

Be careful buying "bags" or a "lot" of pins on auction sites, etc. Often they are fakes and if obvious to the CM, they won't accept the trade. When I purchase from an auction site, I usually buy a sealed set that was sold in the parks.

That’s what I heard. Is there anyway to get started through the official Disney Store so I know it’s legit?

Yeah just buy any pins or sets you see on there. Those are of course legit. It also doesn't matter if the pin says Disneyland or WDW. They will trade any Disney pin so long as it is a Disney pin.
Is there any information on what to buy for kids just starting? Like do they need the lanyard? How many pins would be good to start?

I couldn’t find any good YouTube or article on how to start.

You do not need a lanyard. You only just need a pin. You can just trade one if you want. I think the CMs will do 2-3 pins trades at a time. I am not sure. You just point to the pin you would like to trade and you present them with a pin of yours. It's easy breezy. Look for CMs wearing pins or holding up a pin board. You can also ask other guests if they are trading.

I'd get them at least 5 pins. I always buy a pack of pins I do not care about in the slightest. That way, I am willing to trade them all with no remorse. Depends on how many pins they want to trade.

Yes, typically cast members will trade up to two pins in one visit. Although it may not be obvious but usually CM's in stores will have a book of pins behind the desk to trade. Also, in the Disney hotels there is usually a CM who trades pins (concierge desk, lobby, etc.). Look for a daily activity listing or simply ask a CM about where you can trade pins.

If starting out for the first time, I'd trade with the CM's. It's no fuss and simply exchanging your pin for any of their pins. Trading with other traders can be fun but at times more of a challenge.

If you're going to spend $44.99 on the starter set that comes with 4 pins, personally, I would instead buy the set with the most pins for the same price, which is usually 6 pins. You don't have to have a lanyard. Or if you really want a lanyard, any cheaper one will work. That way you have more pins to work with.

I too have thought about starting a collection for my daughter, thanks for posting this!

I’ve been stalking the website for over a month trying to find a pin set and there has been NOTHING. Not even a pin set that isn’t a D23 exclusive set or more than 2 pins. Lanyard or not.

Good luck! Haha

I use this site to buy authentic pins for trading (distradingpins4u). Try code DP4U for 10% off.

Yes, we've had friends who have used that site successfully for a lot of years. It can also help to go onto a site like PinPics and ask. It's for trading and cataloging, but there are lots of users there who can help you find good, authentic starter pins and things -- and the site has a good forum for things pin related. Any lots off of Amazon or eBay for a couple dollars or less per pin will be fakes, sadly. If it's too good to be true . . . it usually is, as they say.
