You don't get on...it is only for the characters. They are on the boat in the morning, and usually once or twice during the day. Usually it is more...the Fab 5, etc.
The boat sails on the river through AK. Several times throughout the day, the characters will go for a ride along the river waving at everyone along the way.
Ok am I the only one that stops and really looks at the pics with Disney crowds to see if I can find me and my family??? These pics are great. I just can't wait to get there!!!!

Yeah, from what I remember about it, it wasn't that great of a ride. Just up and down the river, that's all! They did have a castmember who came on board with some insects in containers.
The boat pictured is basically the same as a Friendship boat, just for the characters. The ones that were available when the park opened in '98 were the Discovery boats, now not used.......

On a similar note, I think it would be awesome if they'd bring back the Swan Boats that went around Cinderella Castle!
Swan Boats were a ride at Walt Disney World at the Magic Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. A similar ride was found at Disneyland known as the Storybook Land Canal Boats. It was in operation seasonally between May 20, 1974 till August 1983. It originally took a D ticket.
The Swan Boats opened in 1974 and quickly became a popular attraction at Walt Disney World. The boats took guests on a ride around the hub of the Magic Kingdom and the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse.
Originally there was 12 boats when the ride opened but it was reduced to 11 when one of the boats was converted to clean the canals. By the end of the life of the ride, there were only 5 boats left. The reason for closing was because of the cost to keep the boats running. They constantly had issues with their natural gas engines and guidance system. Originally the guidance was done with an electronic system but was changed to use water propulsion to turn the boat. Eventually the boats were removed and sold.
