I had planned on using the Disney photographers for our wedding, but the more journals I read the more nervous I am getting about this. It seems like everyone is using an outside photographer. We plan on using them because it counts towards our minimum and we want to stay as close as possible to that amount. Are the Disney photographers really that bad? Or is it just that you can't really pick who takes the pictures. Please help me fix my panic attack.

Well, I can't speak for a Wishes wedding since we don't have minimums to meet. For us, we decided that photography was the most important aspect and would rather put the largest percent of our budget into it. We weren't happy with the photography package that's included with Escape weddings; it was extremely limited and didn't include "rights" to your photos.

With Randy, we found a package that was perfect for our budget and he also gives us the release to reprint our own photos. We'll be able to substitute the photography that's included with our Escape Package for the honeymoon shoot.

I don't think Disney photography is bad, just overpriced for what you get. You're paying mostly for convenience by doing it through Disney (just like floral, etc). Hopefully others will have definitive answers for you. Don't panic!!

we went with an outside one cos the price really, we only have 30 guests and I think we shall be over and we are not having alot of extras. With the disney photography you dont get the rights you have to pay $1000 to get the rights for your pictures.

I think money and better pics is why people go with outside vendors. We went with misty miotto as we liked her style. Also with disney you can really pic your photographer

I would agree with Mermaid_Ariel: We are going with Rootography because we want a different style of pictures and all the rights.

But if Disney photography is in your budget and will help you meet the minimums, then go for it. The style is more traditional, but they have many competent photographers on staff. Also, I have found the people I've talked to at Disney photographic (for our MK Shoot) to be extremely friendly and helpful! :thumbsup2

Oh, and you can request certain photographers, and they will try to fulfill your request - we asked for one who took some of the MK pix I've seen here that I really liked....

We had the Intimate/Escape wedding and the "package" didn't appeal to me. So we went with Randy and loved him. I am not sure if you get a 4x6 proof of all your photos with DPS or not. I think some brides have or have prepaid for their proofs. Had I know that, I may have just used DPS. Just talk with them and see what options you have. You can request a photographer...there isn't a guarantee, but they try to honor requests. Regardless of who you use, be sure to let them know EXACTLY what you want...posed, artistic, photojournalistic, etc...If there are certain things you want, print of examples, BE SPECIFIC. Don't wait to get them back and regret there aren't certain ones there.

I got home, got my pictures, and realized we didn't have any good ones of my daughter and I or of our newly blended family. Can't go back and redo it now though....

I just got off the phone with DPS regarding some reorder questions and they were VERY helpful and actually told me a LESS expensive way to get what I want. I'm impressed !

Many of the brides here have chosen to use outside vendors for their photos...and usually it is because of the price of the copyrighted images. Disney does tend to be *ahem* a little pricey on that part:rolleyes1;)

Having said that...you might want to consider that Disney does well over 2000 ceremonies a year. Typically here on the DIS we see maybe 100 brides or so over that year and while the vast majority choose outside vendors, some do use Disney (with great success). That means that it's very likely that Disney is doing most of the remaining 1900 ceremonies a year. I think that speaks volumes regarding their skill and knowledge.

With any photographer you should have an idea of the kinds of photos you want (specific poses, style, etc.). In the past, Disney didn't allow you to request a photographer, I have heard they are changing that policy a little. As swmhc mentioned, they are trying to honor requests. We used Ty and he did an excellent job for us, and I know several other brides were happy with him as well.

I did pre-purchase my proofs and that is most certainly one way to save some money and get a copy of all your prints. I would also second the suggestion of talking with the folks at Disney to see what your options are.

For someone in your situation, trying to meet minimums, Disney is the perfect choice! Rest assured your pictures will be beautiful and professional.

I hope that helps some.

Ok thanks everybody!!! I'm not quite as scared anymore. I really appreciate all of the insight and suggestions. We are suckers for convenience and I think that probably wins out for us, so as long as I won't be horribly disappointed I think it will be ok.

Thanks again hiwaygal! I just looked at the samples and I'm perfectly happy with them so whooo! There's a load off!

Disney Photography...

Roseviolet, over the years, I've used Disney's photographers at my family's private events, including our FTW custom (wishes) vow renewal in 2004. We've had six different photographers, and one of them we've actually had twice. I've never been anything but pleased with their work.

Some of Disney's work can be seen in various on-line albums on mine: click here and click here. Please note that most of my photo albums have low-res photos in them. I intentionally did that when my photos resided on Yahoo. Now that they reside on Flickr, I'm in the process of replacing them with higher resolution photographs. Just thought I'd mention that.

Hiwaygal, as always, I love stumbling into your posts. I hope our paths cross in WDW one of these days. I would love to meet you.

I have ready many of your reports and just love all the different Disney events that you have done.

I have a Disney photo book question for you. What type of book did you use for all your Disney pictures? What I am asking is what did the actual book look like. Was it their standard book and if so what color is it, what type of material is the cover made out of and can you get anything inscribed on the cover (names, dates, Minnie and Mickey?). Also, what do the inside pages look like. Are they standard, just put your photos in? Have you ever had one of the special books made (where the photo is the actual page). Our wedding is in November and we are not sure if we want to use Disney or an outside vendor..

Thanks in advance for any help.
Linda

Oh, sure, Lpizzuro123, ask me the one question that I cannot answer 3-1/2 years after my event. ~Gulp!~ :scared:

I have yet to give Disney a list of 80-100 photos to use for the artistic book that was a part of my photo package. Last I heard, they were no longer using that vendor, and if that is true, it will break my heart because I so wanted that book. It was a book like no other that I had seen before. It's very hard to describe. You have to see it in order to understand how it works.

So, you have completely stumped me with your question! It doesn't happen often -- and I will try not to let it happen again. :lmao:

Now with that being said, over the years, I have personally used many vendors to create custom photo books of my family's vacations and other milestone events. Sadly, one of my favorite companies went out of business earlier in the decade. Anyone who saw that particular photo book of mine had assumed that it was made by Disney. It was gorgeous and extremely well-made. However, that company (it was foreign) came about at the very beginning of the creation of the Photo Book Industry. They were a trailblazer who sadly ran out of funding before the industry took off. I actually corresponded with their CEO when I learned that they were closing up shop. I told her that my heart was broken because I had wanted to use her company's products for every vacation / milestone in my life. Her response was that she had planned on doing the same thing for her own family and she was just as heartbroken as I was.

Fast-forward a few years. I have been using Shutterfly for most of my photo greeting card and photo book needs. I have also recently begun using Apple (I've got an iMac). They've got a soft-cover book in various sizes that I love. There are a handful of other vendors who I use, but Shutterfly & Apple seem to be the main ones who I turn to. I like their products and their customer service has been good.

I know this wasn't the answer that you were hoping for, but I wanted to let you know that once you get your hands on JPG images of your event, you can turn to various vendors for your photo book needs. ;)

Before I close, if you want to see, for example, a photo book that I had Apple create for my Mom a few months ago, just let me know and I'll put some screen shots into an on-line album so you can "see" how her book turned out. It was darling -- and the price was extremely reasonable. I was definitely a happy camper.

Sorry to stump you and thanks for all the information. I will have to research further on the different type of books from Disney and other outside vendors. We will be down there in June or July for our planning session but hopefully we will find out more info before then. I should have looked more closely when were down this past November for our site visit but there was just so much to check out it got alittle overwhelming.

A friend of mine and her husband went on a 2 week cruise and used Shutterfly for their hard cover book and it came out beautiful. I wanted to try to play with the program and create a small book just for the experience and to give me some insite on how to use it. We were thinking of making one of these books for each my father and my DF father (rather then get the parent albums that are usually offered with photo packages) from our wedding.

I've never used Apple as I have a Dell laptop both at home and at work.
