I thought it would be fun to watch as many Disney movies as we could to prepare for our trip next month. What movies should we watch that will help the kids connect to what they will see in Disney more?

What - you don't have every Disney movie ingrained in your family's heads yet??? :rotfl:
What ages are your kids? Girls or boys? If you have the Disney channel, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is a great show, and has all the "core" characters. If you have girls, then the princesses are a must - Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty.
Peter Pan and Aladdin are also good ones. Most kids know the Pooh characters already.
Also, my DD (3) loves to watch the Travel channel shows about WDW - she recognizes the parks and gets excited. Or, the free planning DVD they send out would be great.
You don't have to watch movies/tv - books, coloring books, games, etc are
just as good!
Honestly - your kids will have a great time no matter what!

The movies that have rides for sure: Snow White, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Alladin, Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story, etc

Then the ones whose characters will also be in the park...Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Sleeepy Beauty. The Little Mermaid.

We love Disney Sing a long Songs..Disneyland fun. It has a lot of the rides in the sing a long and some songs. My dd loves to watch it and tell me what rides she is going on!

We are thinking the same thing so we made a list of all of our Disney movies i our collection. We have a lot of them and DS has seen most of them. The PP had great suggestions...focus on the rides first.
We don't have Pinnochio or Mary Poppins, so I will have to ask our neighbor to borrow them. Jiminy Cricket is pretty visable in the parks, so I want him to be familiar with him.

Here's my list:

Lists of movies everyone needs to see before they go to Disney:

Swiss Family Robinson (with John Mills, father of Hayley) for the Treehouse
Alice in Wonderland (teacups)
Dumbo (obvious)
Peter Pan
Snow White
Pinnochio
any of the Daniel Boone series starring Fess Parker
Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn
Song of the South for Splash Mountain (hard to obtain--out of circulation)
Cinderella

This is odd, but people should see "Hello Dolly" and "Meet Me in St. Louis" and Summer Magic simply because the music from those movies is played on Main Street as background music and really makes you feel, oh, ..I don't know, happy!!!
Also, check out "The Music Man" Also, Lady and the Tramp for Tony's Town Square Restaurant.

The Lion King: There are a number of attractions with Lion King characacters, songs and elements- Festival of the Lion King, Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade and Rafiki's Planet Watch at AK, Circle of Life movie at EPCOT, Mickey's Philharmagic and Enchanted Tiki Room at MK, and Fantasmic at MGM. It's also a great into for Animal Kingdom since many of the characters from the movie also have real-life counterparts on the safari or Panganini forest trail.

Peter Pan: The movie has its own ride at MK and also has a segment in Mickey's Philharmagic as well. The characters are also featured in the castle show, afternoon parade and SpectroMagic in MK and Tinker Bell makes a special appearence in the Wishes fireworks flying down from the Castle.

Finding Nemo: At EPCOT, characters from Nemo are featured in The Seas pavillion. They have their own ride and a great interactive show called Turtle Talk with Crush. There's also a live musical version of the film at AK.

Cinderella: Brush up on the story behind the princess who lives in the castle at MK. She's also in both MK parades and the castle show.

Toy Story: Buzz Lightyear has his own ride at MK, there is a Pizza Planet restaurant and arcade at MGM based on the one in the movie, character meet-and-greets at Al's Toy Barn, and they appear in the parade at MGM. Soon there will be a Pixar street dedicated to characters.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The ride that the movie is based on is at MK plus some of the new characters like Captain Jack, Barbossa, and Davy Jones are now on the ride as well.

Beauty and the Beast: This will help in understanding the live stage show. The characters are also featured in Mickey's Philharmaghic and the afternoon parade at MK and Fantasmic

The Little Mermaid: Also has a show at HS, is featured in Mickey's Philharmagic, and is in a number os shows and parades including the afternoon parade and Spectromagic at MK and Fantasmic.

Fantasia or Fantasia 2000: The Sorcerer's Apprentice staring Mickey Mouse is featured in both of these films and was an inspiration for segments from Fantasmic, Mickey's Philharmagic, the Great Movie Ride and Spectro Magic parade. There's also Fantasia-themed mini golf near the Swan and Dolphin.

Classic Disney Shorts: Not really a movie, but this will help give some background for Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto and the rest of the gang who appear in parades, shows, and meet-and-greets throughout the parks. Mickey's Toontown Fair also gets a lot of its inspiration from these shorts. There are a number of DVDs out that showcase them including the Walt Disney Treasures DVDs and Walt Disney Classic Cartoon Favorites volumes.

My kids were 6 and 9 when we went to WDW last summer, and had seen just about every Disney movie EXCEPT "Swiss Family Robinson" and "Honey I Shrunk the Kids". So we watched those a couple of times before going, and I'm glad we did!

If I remember correctly, Fess Parker starred in Davy Crocket for Disney. Daniel Boone was a later television series, but I don't believe it was associated with Disney.

Could be wrong! I just remember the coonskin cap being popular long before the television series aired!

I have been doing the same thing. I have watching Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and other animated movies. My family has watched Cars so many times we quote from it on a regular basis.

Recently I have gotten into some movies I have seen in years like Pollyanna. Pollyanna reminds me of main st. USA. I also just ordered Toby Tyler. I can't wait. Anything to fill up time before we go.

Lilo and Stitch if you are going to Ohana or the stitch "ride".

Little Einsteins if your kids are young and will want to meet characters at HS.

Monster's Inc. before the laugh factory.

!

I think you're right!:rotfl: My error! I remember the song "Davy, Davy Crockett--King of the Wild Frontier" (I was typing very, very fast.:rolleyes1 )

What a great idea. I plan on doing that in the next 2 years with my son who is now 2 so that he will be familiar with everyone before we go. He just now started saying Mickey!!! I'm going to turn him into a Disney freak like his mommy.

Anyway..The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Cars, Dumbo, Monsters, Inc.....wow i better get started now huh!

This is off the top of my head, so I'm probably missing a few. Especially since I was up all night with a sick child. It's a good sized list to get you going.

Rides/Shows that focus on Movies:
  • Peter Pan
  • Snow White
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Country Bear Jamboree
  • Toy Story
  • Monsters Inc.
  • Aladdin
  • Dumbo
  • Winnie The Pooh
  • Lilo and Stitch
  • Swiss Family Robinson
  • Honey I Shrunk the Kids
  • Dinosaur
  • Finding Nemo
  • The Lion King

Movie Heavy Characters:
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Cinderella
  • Snow White
  • Toy Story
  • Robin Hood
  • Pocahontas
  • Peter Pan
  • Aladdin
  • Little Mermaid
  • Mary Poppins
  • Classic Disney Cartoons

I would say the Disney Sing-Along movies. Not the cartoon versions, but the actualy visual of the characters so the children can have a better idea of what to expect. If they are only seeing cartoons, that is what they will be expecting when they get there! Then of course they see Goofy standing there in full costume and YIKES!!

Look over what rides and characters you want to see. Then watch movies related to them. We watched Winnie the Pooh - Peter Pan- Mulan - Cinderella - Toy Story 1 & 2 - Beauty and the Beast - as many Mickey movies we could - Snow White - Alice in Wonderland - and lots more!
