Disney Motivation

I'm always looking for motivation beyond the logical, live-longer thing. My big Disney-related motivation is to be able to go to the water parks without being worried about how I look or whether or not I'll be able to ride a ride. I haven't been to a water park - and participated - since I was 8 or 9. We took a bus on our last trip that made a stop at Typhoon Lagoon and I was overcome with jealousy.

So, considering that this is a Disney forum, what is your Disney-related motivation to lose the weight/get fit?

Heather

Two words: Run Disney.

I love the endurance events at Disney. And the faster I can do em, the more time I can spend goofing around with the characters on the course!

I also find the Run Disney events very motivating. So far, I've done a few 5Ks but DH and I are signed up for a 10 mile run in Sept....lots of training to do!

I'm in the same boat, walkdmc -- the ToT will be my longest event yet. Soooo excited!

Add me to the Run Disney list. I've always wanted to run, but have never been able to do it because of my heart. After seeing all of the runners over Marathon Weekend, I realized that since my heart is fixed now, the time to really start working toward this goal is now. I've got my eye on the 2013 Princess 1/2.

Also, Run Disney is the only way I'm going to get DH back to The World any time soon. ;)

My Disney motivation is to run the Princess Half Marathon in 2013. I want to stay healthy and in shape so running is what I do.....however my husband give me a hard time about working out/running and pulls the "your taking away from the family" card. SOOOO I told him that the only way we can get to WDW next year is if I run in the half marathon in Feb 2012. What a perfect plan...hehehe...now after a long day at work I come home and he will ask about me going out for a little while to train for the half, he keeps pushing me to stay conditioned. Perfect plan, we get to go to WDW and I still get to run.....

I eventually want to do one as well. I am way too big to run anything anytime soon, but I want to walk the 5K within the next year or two. I've started walking again after a 7 month break. My fastest mph so far is around 18.5 but my average is right around 20. A far cry from the 16 min limit, but I will get there!

Heather, that is EXACTLY where I was 7 months ago. But some daily walking and Weight Watcher-ing and now (drumroll please)...I'm able to walk a 13 min mile pretty much daily (no running for me -- I just don't have the knees for it).

It's not marathon speed, but it'll do for now, I figure.

When people praise me for what I've done, I tell them it's easy for me -- be impressed by that woman who was 70 lbs heavier and got her a$$ out there in August and did one. painful. lap. at a time!:)

I love to hear that! It is such a wonderful boost! I have no plans to stop - I eventually want that medal!

That's FANTASTIC, Heather. You may want to check out the Princess Half Walkers thread -- a lot of walkers hang out there. Also, if you want to check out my story, look for the WalkDisney blog on the Weight Watchers website. It's not much of a blog, really -- but you may get a kick out of some of the Disney stuff.

Also (and last advice-y item, I promise): you may want to check out Wendy Baumgarten's About.com walking website and/or the book Walking for Dummies. I got a lot of high impact strategies from both :-)

I really want to participate in one of the runDisney events, too. Right now I have my eye on the 2013 Princess Half. We can do it!

For our May trip, though, we've booked a portrait session at the Poly. These will be our first family portraits, and my goal is to lose 5 pounds before then. I've been running with the C25K program, and DH and I met with a registered dietitian last week and got some tips on eating better.

My main takeaways from that meeting:

  • Eat a balance of carbs, protein and healthy fats at every meal.
  • Think of the day as an upside-down pyramid and eat your biggest meal at the beginning of the day. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.
Whatever path you take toward your goal, good luck! You can do it.

I want to be able to walk around the park all day without foot or leg pain.
I want to be able to run for a bus or monorail and MAKE IT.
I want to be able to rock a two-piece at Typhoon Lagoon.
I want to NOT look like Divine from Hairspray (Original) in all my photos.

Two words: Run Disney.
Because of RunDisney, I've been introduced to the Princess Half Marathon. I am currently training for the run in 2013. I'm 7 weeks into training and I've already lost a pant size (from 18w to 16w!).

I... My fastest mph so far is around 18.5 but my average is right around 20. A far cry from the 16 min limit, but I will get there!
I'm right about where you are, Heather. I average 18-19mm (I assume you mean 18.5 minute mile, not 18.5 miles per hour:scared1: ) I am trying to focus more on endurance right now (going at a steady pace for a longer time) before I work up to speeding up! I am doing a Jeff Galloway Conditioning plan before I begin the Couch to 5k, and I can currently do about 2 minute runs within my walking. I'll get there! I tell myself that every time. I'll get there.

My motivation is simple -- to look better. Yes, I want to be healthier, but when I am completely honest with myself, the thing that has motivated me more than anything in the past was when someone made a comment about the way I looked.

In January, a friend at work looked at my stomach and made a rude comment. Right then and there, I had this revelation that my weight gain was more obvious than I thought. I instantly turned things around, cleaned up my diet, started exercising, and have since lost 17 pounds and really toned up.

Historically, I have maintained my motivation by signing up for races a long time in advance. I have a half marathon planned for May, as well as the Disney half in November. Even if I fall off the wagon for a week or two, the fact that those events are already paid for will force me to get right back on the wagon again.

Finally, although I never do this, I think photos can be very motivational. Although I didn't take a starting photo, my wife snapped a photo of me at the beach in February. At the time, I thought I was in "good" shape. One look at the photo and my motivation hit an all new high.......I think it is important to see where you started, as well as where you ended up.

I want to be able to ride all the rides comfortably. I want to walk without pain in my knee-I want to be able to keep up with my kids. I want to be in all the pictures that I shy away from due to my weight. I want to be healthy and live a life full of Disney vacations.

My motivation is doing the Disney Princess 1/2 in 2013!!! But, I also want to completely and totally enjoy my trips to WDW as I used to. The last time I went in 2011 I was at my heaviest weight ever and I struggled to walk the distances required at WDW. It was the first time that I really noticed pain, discomfort, and annoyance. Annoyance in myself for allowing myself to get to this point. I also want to love the pictures that we take each trip. You look back at all of my trip photos in front of the Magic Kingdom and you can clearly see my weight loss battle (up one trip, down the next, and so on and so on). Can you say roller coaster? So, that's what keeps me going foward.

Keep it up, it sounds like you are headed in the right direction!!! Trust me girl, I am too big too but get out there and kind of jog. My boyfriend can walk as fast as I "jog." Haha, I have a long way to go too, but I am SO EXCITED about it. Good luck!!!

LOVE THIS!!! I'm that 70 pound over weight girl right now...working on it...one step at a time.
