our portable DVD player just died. I bought one for each kid....no more fighting over which movie to watch!

We love ours...we have down loaded audio books from library, books on cd, music from cds. We use this site to rip our own DVDs to sd cards:

http://magicdvdripper.com/

I think you get 5 free trys before you have to purchase the software. It does take a loooonnnngggg time to rip and transfer the dvds, but will save your sanity compared to trying to understand the feeble directions that come w/the mix max.

can you rip a movie and save it to more than one SD card? IE rip Up and save it on two SD cards so DSs can both have one?

Sooo tempted, but I just bought dd an mp3 player for christmas. Does this play full length movies? Do you recommend this to watch movies?
ETA - What are Disney Mix Clips and Disney Max Clips?

I don't see why not...the software that rips the dvd converts it to a mix max compatible file that is stored on your pc, so you should be able to copy that file to multiple sd cards. I can get a movie and several 1/2 hr shows on a 2gb sd card....but I read a good tip on these boards. To put movies on 512 cards as that will hold one movie perfectly.

I just got 2 on Black Friday and, thanks to PerditaMarie, I was able to download movies from Magicdvdripper.com (highly recommend them!)

It does take FOREVER to download them (did Enchanted today and took 4 hours!) but it was free and the quality was GREAT!!

I would HIGHLY suggest using dvd's that in fullscreen version, but the widescreen versions are OK too.

what I found out is that I download the movies directly to the MIx-Max then transfer from the mix-max to the memory card (only takes a minute or two after the lengthly dvd rip) You do need a 2g memory card which is all it can hold, but after that its GREAT!

REALLY lightweight, can't wait to give them to my boys the morning of our trip, theyre already loaded with 120 songs and 4 movies each (Incredibles, Enchanged, Merry Madagascar, Bolt, Robots, POTC 2 & 3 & Monsters Inc) LOVE THEM!! I got mine for $19.99 which included a case and movie, but would pay $39.99 if I had known how much I would love it!!

I believe the Mix Max is an mp4 player....meaning it can play music and movies. It is like an ipod, and is pretty durable. This will play movies...I have Pride and Prejudice on mine, and the kids have various shows on our library of sd cards. It also beautifully accepts audio book downloads free from your local library.

You can buy Mix clips that have music and movies pre loaded on them, but they are pricey, kinda hard to find and have a limited selection.

If you can convert your own dvds, you can load your own movies and shows and store them on sd cards. I believe somewhere on the Disney site, you can buy downloads of Disney TV shows as well.

HTH.

What do you think a girl of 7 would think of the Pirate one? Is it to boyish? Anyone seen any other good deals? Thanks!

So, if I buy a DVD that comes with a digital copy, will that play on this thing? I usually let DS use my iTouch to watch movies, but this thing looks a little more durable and it would let me keep my iTouch all to myself! :) How else do you get movies on to this thing?

This is what I am wondering too - so *bump* :)

I downloaded magicdvdripper and I've started ripping DVDs to put on SD cards so the boys will have a video library to choose from. the other option is to buy Mix max Movies...but I hear the selection is limited and pricey.

My dd bought one of these for her younger brother for Christmas. Does anyone know if Itunes will work (especially for videos) and is there anywhere we can find free music, legally? We are mostly wanting kids songs.

I've had the best luck so far just ripping music onto my computer then just right clicking and sending them to j. Itunes does not work with mix maxs.....you can buy sd cards to load with music but it does hold a ton of songs. As for free music I go to the library.
Good luck

Thanks. He doesnt have many cds (we have several tapes tat he loves, esp. disney soundtracks). Got the mix max yesterday and it came with 3 sd cards, the jump in soundrack (no clue what this one is), Disney Mania 5, and Radio Disney Jams. I also put 4 movies to put on a 2 gig sd card, so he will have some stuff on it. Any clue where I can find some inexpensive soundtracks? His favorite is the tarzan soundtrack, the lion king soundtrack, and the little mermaid soundtrack.
