"Walt Disney World is bringing an innovation co-working lab to the East Coast, providing an area for local engineers to work with the theme park giant.

During Orlando Tech Association's panel discussion on the rise of innovation labs in Central Florida on April 22, Suri Al-Naimi of Disney's Global Creative & Innovation Development said to the crowd, "We're in the process of creating a makerspace on the East Coast." Al-Nami also mentioned the possibility of the partnering with Factur Lab in Orlando — a co-working maker lab — to do so.

Al-Naimi referred to Orlando being the best spot for it: "You shouldn't have to rely on jumping on a plane to New York, because we have a lot of creative richness right on our doorstep."

Al-Naimi did not share any other details, except the need for Disney to partner with others in the local tech community to bring in fresh ideas. "We're always looking to push and create a call when everyone expects a faster horse," she said referring to the company pushing its technology limits for rides and other attractions. "It might come in the classical mean through the Imagineering group, but now as we become this larger organization, we realize it has to come from everyone. Innovation and creativity can't just come from one segment of an organization."

Having an innovation lab in Orlando would make a lot of sense. Right now, The Walt Disney Co. has research labs that study robotics, animatronics and other forms of technology in California, Pennsylvania and Switzerland. Orlando has a big Disney presence with numerous theme parks, a couple of which are undergoing renovations.

For example, Disney's Animal Kingdom is building Pandora: The World of Avatar that re-creates the world from the James Cameron film, Avatar. Rumor has it that the area may have robotic versions of Na'vi — tall blue characters from the film — that may come face-to-face with guests when it opens in 2017.

Also, Disney's Hollywood Studios will open new expansions to the Star Wars andToy Story lands sometime in the near future. Each of those major projects will use cutting-edge technology and animatronics that will enhance the theme park guest experience. A local Disney innovation lab could assist in the theme park working on how to implement drones into its shows. The technology could be used to carry marionettes in parades, as well as perform synchronized aerial performances during nighttime shows."
