I am an overweight, undermotivated person, who has decided that doing a Disney marathon would be a good goal. I realize I have a LOT of work ahead of me, this IS a longterm goal. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get started?????? TIA

First off, :welcome: ! There are lots of good people here who will be able to help motivate you. Just hearing some of the challenges that our WISH teammates have been able to overcome is inspiration enough that you can do it! We are a big happy family who will be able to help. Check out the weekly training thread for more information and jump right into the discussion.

As far as starting, you have already taken one of the hardest steps. You have a goal and now all you have to do is work towards it. Many of us use John Bingham's book "Marathoning for Mortals" (MFM). He talks about having the courage to start and how to reach your goals. He also has training plans for 1/2 marathons and full marathons ranging from purely walking to walk/run to run/walk to running the whole thing! Most of us are in the walk/run or run/walk category, but you will need to do what is best for you.

As always, remember to check with your Doctor too. That's always a good idea before starting.

Come join us! We will be able to provide you with the mental and emotional support to make it to the starting line and ultimately the finish! The feeling of accomplishment from finishing the WDW marathon is amazing!

Just like Paul said, Welcome! And please come join us on the walking/running group threads:

Wk of Aug 6--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Many of us started from the same place as you are. I needed a goal for working out, couldn't just hop on the treadmill and walk. I signed up for the WDW half last year and haven't looked back! You'll find walkers, runners, and some in between (those of us that do intervals). Come on in and introduce yourself!

I said welcome adn gave my $0.02 on the training thread. Want to say again that this si a great first step. DH and I did our first marathon in January adn decided that we need to do it again or we'd never get our butts off the couch. So, your lack of motivation adn need to lose pounds are not alone by any means!!

BTW - Love the dwarves statement in your sig!!!

Just saw on another thread that the 2007 Half Marathon sign up is full. You could still sign up through a fundraising team. But how about the Minnie Marathon in May? 15 k or 9 miles at 15 min/mile max.

I went from never doing an event to finishing the 2006 Half marathon and then finishing the 2006 Minnie marathon. The Minnie was harder because I had slacked off on training and it was warmer.

Would never be interested in any kind of marathon but a Disney one. A trip to Disney is a great reward for exercise. I justify the expense of the trip as an investment in better health.

Good luck!
