This forum rocks! Almost everything I can think of is answered here - except.... anyone been to Disneyworld during the Marathon? We are coming all the way from Australia and note the weekend we will be there in January coincides with the Marathon. Will it have an impact? Any ideas what areas to avoid? Thanks for your help :earsgirl:

Welcome to the DIS snowflake!! We went over marathon weekend in 2004 and had a great time. If you do a search you will find tons of info - I remember that I even found the race route maps through the parks.

We stayed at BWV - did not feel the parks were impacted much crowd wise - it was still a very 'quiet' time to visit. Just be careful of your planning for marathon morning - they close some of the roads down and bus/auto transportation can get backed up. We had planned on taking the boat to MGM early that morning - ahead of the runners - but the big kids wouldn't get up  , so we ended up entering the park in the midst of the marathon. Not the best idea if you wanted 'easy' access - but we went with the flow and ended up having fun cheering the runners from the boat and when we finally got into MGM there were a lot of characters there cheering on the runners - it was hard to get around for a while though. We managed to get over to RnR and Tot and then to Prime Time for lunch - by the time we finished lunch it was all over! The weather that week was in the 50s-low 70s during the day - high 30s to 50s at night - we did have a couple of windy nights where even the big kids were glad that I had packed headbands for their ears and stretchy gloves (and the plastic raincover for DGrD's stroller kept her snug and warm !) :smooth:

Lots of DISers run in the marathon - there will be a lot of info around here!

If you are anywhere near Epcot when the race starts (this year the 1/2 is on Saturday and the full on Sunday), you will hear the race start fire works, etc. If you try to get into Epcot early that AM the parking lot could be somewhat full. The Family Run starts at 9:30 on Saturday which is a change from the past when it started at 7:30.

Not a big impact on the parks. You might find some roads closed if you plan on driving. Otherwise just take a bus.

In January 2005 we decided to go to disney literally on monday, left Wednesday and stayed til Sunday. We didnt realize until we arrived that there was a marathon going on. Someone actually scared us on the Mears bus on the way over saying its 40,000 people, etc. Until race day when we were in the AK and you had to cross their path to get to the Dinosour ride, we wouldnt have known they were even there. Many of the runners were staying at AKL and were in the lobby after the race, didnt find it at all inconvenient and the parks werent crowded at all. Dont be discouraged like I was when i heard 40,000 people, they really do not interefere too much with Disney itself even though a few roads were closed it was very clearly marked.

Thanks for your comments. it is going to cost us a 'gazillion' dollars to get there from Australia and we want to experience everything! This board sure will help us make the most of our trip
