so I would like to run a marathon...never have done it before...and would like to start with one at disney...so i know I would have to train for it...has anyone ever done one? how did they train? my goal is to do the disney one in january and the one on castaway cay when i go in May 2010...suggestions? mind you..I haven't done any time of running in 3years..my son is 1years old and I haven't exercised since i got pregnant so I'm totally out of shape...

I think you are too late to run the WDW marathon in january but maybe not. have you checked to see if there are slots open?

You'll find the info on training to run on the W.I.S.H. board here on the DIS and there are lots of training programs on line. Good luck!

There are still openings for the 2010 marathon. The half is full.

To go from no running at all to a marathon in a little under six months is quite, well...ambitious to say the least. How many other shorter races (5k, 10k, half marathon) have you done? 26.2 miles is a long distance.

I didn't know there was a marathon at Castaway Cay - when is it?

There is an organized 5K run on Castaway Cay. David Parfitt has written a blog about it.

You may want to check out the WISH events board. Any question you can possibly have about marathon weekend probably has already been addressed there.

I've done the WDW half and the 5K (as evidence by my picture being in the blog) and will run the full in 2011 along with the DL half for the coast to coast medal.

Thanks guys I will head over to W.I.S.H. To see wats up..oh the castaway cay one is not a marathon..just a 5k run...well maybe I can do the marathon in januiary and if I don't finish oh welllllll..I can say I tried. And I've never actually ran any type of organized run...there is a family one I see on the list..maybe I will do that one lol

To go from no running at all to running a marathon in less than 6 months is, in my opinion, foolish and will likely lead to injury. I'd suggest one of the shorter runs during the WDW marathon weekend - perhaps the 5K, for this January. Do some shorter races during 2010 (like 10K and/or a half marathon) and leave the WDW marathon for January 2011.

The WDW marathon is known for its strict cut off times - you will be forced to stop and get into a bus if you are running too slowly (it is far stricter than many other marathons that I have run).

As has been pointed out, the run on Castaway Cay is a 5K run, not a marathon.

I'm thinking you are in better shape, and younger than I am! and I am going to do the half! I believe you can do it, if you want it, and you commit to it!

It so depends on you - and I definately would encourage you to head over to WISH comp/event thread!

I know for me, I had to start with the couch25K program - and figure out where the point of being "swept" was - I didnt want to be swept! You have to do 16min miles - for the average in shape person - you can (and many people do) walk the marathon - for others a 16 min mile pace is fast - I know at one point of my first journey, it was too fast at about mile 11 (Half) - I couldnt keep up with the walkers!!

Good Luck!
