Disney Magic - Nov 10, 2012 - Western Caribbean from Galveston - Sun, Fun & Beaches!

Have any of you sailed from Galveston before? We are planning on driving down the day before and spend the night close to the cruise terminal.
I'm starting to plan and get excited! But the cruise news lately has been a little concerning! I'm sure I'll get over the jitters and have a wonderful time.

Hey Trudy,
We've only sailed out of Port Canaveral and Miami ports ourselves. I'm with the Holiday Inn frequent guest program (Priority Club) and we've got points for a couple free nights at one of the Holiday Inns close to the port. We're likely holding on to our rental and I'll drop the family off at the port, return the rental and get a shuttle back to the port. We did this in Port Canaveral and it worked well for us.

Plot and Plan??
Oooooooh. I like you already! pirate::chat::grouphug:

a partner in crime - let the plotting of the fun begin! Anyone else?! I for one have only been on 4 day cruises so you veterans can fill me in on the magic of 7 days :lovestruc:rotfl:

It's cold an drizzly here in Central Texas too; it's nice to think of a vacation of any kind, much less in the sunshine. I don't know really what to expect though, we have never been on a cruise. I'm hoping I'll get over the jitters!

Hi everyone! Experienced cruiser here, but new to the Disney Cruise lines! =) I have been on 3 Carnival cruises and the last cruise I went on was my husband and daughter's first!

Me = Tiana (33 at time of sailing)
DH = Chris (33)
DD = Kelly Jane (5 at time of sailing)

We are super excited that Galveston is now a Disney port! I'd love some more info on the Fish Extender exchange and how we sign up/rules/etc as the little I have heard, I am interested! Looking forward to getting to know my fellow Magic makers! =)

Welcome Princess Tiana! It's great to have you along with us!
DS5 will be with Kelly Jane in the camp activities. It'll be an awesome cruise. We've been on 3 Carnival cruises ourselves, but you'll find that once you go DCL, there's no going back!

Welcome Trudy and Tiana!

Its an 80 degree day now in Oklahoma - go figure! Now it's another good time to think about cruising! We haven't ever sailed out of Galveston - only done Disney at out Port Canaveral. Pretty excited about being able to drive down though and not worry so much about packing.

Anyone here been to Galveston? I am excited about checking it out too. Never been on the Magic - just Wonder and Dream - so I am excited to check out the original.

It's warm and humid in Central Texas too! I haven't been to Galveston in a long time, not since the hurricane damage. But I've heard it's up and going, at least the tourist/beach areas. We are planning on driving down the day before. Would like to stay at the port so we are very close. I guess I need to decide where to park our car. We will have 2 in wheelchairs so will need to drop them off first.

Is anyone heading up the FE program for our cruise, or is it still too early? lol Can you tell I am a planner?! :rotfl:
Well my dear, since you're volunteering ;). You're more than welcome to create an FE list, but there's not currently a lot of people active on this thread yet to really get one going. We're only on page 4 of this thread.
I'll start up a roll call in around September, unless there is a need for earlier, but so far no need to yet.

Hey Gang,
I just called this hotel to get a better idea of port shuttles etc. They have a complimentary cruise ship shuttle operating out of this location. The gal told me that the earliest departures for the ships is 9:30AM. I've booked there for our family, maybe have a few of us gather for a pre-cruise gathering?

Hope that helps for some of you! Can't Wait, Can't Wait, Can't Wait!:cool1::banana::banana:

(Ok, I gotta wait :(, At least it's only 7 1/2 months from now:))

I'm getting excited about the cruise as well. So is my son and his friend, who will be accompanying hubby and I. I had a dream last night about it: I was going around and around the buffet trying to make up my mind about what to eat! Then the ship started moving and the movement was really awful. I must be more concerned about being seasick than I'm willing to admit!
We haven't decided whether to spend the night in Galveston the night before or on the north side of Houston. Don't want to get in the awful traffic. We can't leave Central Texas til noon when my son gets off of work. I prefer not to drive at night too, esp. when I'm not sure of the way. Guess we'll work out the details as it gets closer.

I can help with some specific questions about the region. We're in Houston, we go to Galveston often, and we've cruised out of Galveston many times over the years, including last month (on Royal Caribbean.) I can't help with DCL questions though; this is our first Disney cruise.

We generally drive down from Houston the morning of the cruise. Traffic isn't usually much of an issue (even during Mardi Gras, which worried us.) Even with bad traffic, it's never taken us more than 2 hours, and we can usually make it in an hour. Just don't try to drive it at rush hour during the week!

The weather in November is somewhat unpredictable. In general, I'd say that we've found walking on the beach in November pleasant, swimming in heated pools pleasant, and swimming in the ocean just too cold. That said, it's only March now, and we've already been swimming in the ocean in Galveston a couple of times this year.

Galveston has come back reasonably well from the hurricane. It certainly isn't as depressing to visit as it was a couple of years ago, but there are still dead trees in some areas.

If you end up wanting restaurant recommendations either near the port or over towards the seawall, I'm happy to make suggestions. Galveston has pretty good Tex-Mex and Greek food, as well as traditional seafood places at various price points. Some places have great views as well, looking out either over the gulf or over the port area near where the cruise ships dock, but generally you pay a little more for the places right on the water with the views.

We would love some restaurant suggestions for galveston!!! :)

Can't tell you how excited I was at the Galveston Disney cruise announcement last year!:yay::thumbsup2:cool1::woohoo:

My mom and I went on our first cruise last year on the Dream and it was amazing, so we were more than ready to book onboard for Galveston 2012! We are starting to get excited and are looking at the port adventures offered. We will dearly miss Castaway Cay, but hopefully there will be something else fun to do!

Welcome Dustmouse!
Noticed you're in Houston, like many, we're flying into Hobby and possibly renting a car from there to Galveston. Maybe we'll see you on the highways and biways along the route to the port! :)
Feel free to tell us more about yourself. I'll be making up a Roll Call in the next little while and we'll set up from there!
As of today, we're 7 months from our sail date! 7 months from this minute, we'll all be aboard the Magic, will have feasted on our first lunch onboard and getting re-acquainted with the ship.
I was reading on the main cruise board and some are concerned that the Magic is not as 'modern' as the Dream/Fantasy. Don't you worry, it's a fantastic ship that we can't wait to return to.:cool1:

Hi Y'all! :goodvibes
DH and I will be Sailing on this cruise as well!! This will be our 8th Disney cruise. We are sailing with friends who live in Kyle (just south of Austin) and are very excited to be able to combine a visit with them and a cruise!

Welcome 'feenie'! Slowly but surely more come and join in the fun!
Good to have yet another veteran DCL cruiser along.

I've started our Roll Call now that we have 8 posters on this thread. Not much to do with it yet, but will post it eventually.

It's getting closer all the time! (but first we have to go the tropical-like heat of the summer:furious:)
