Disney Magazine Coming to an End?

Didn't the Disney Magazine start out as part of the Magic Kingdom Club? The Club has been gone for a year or two.

Yes, Disney Magazine (once called Disney News) was a benefit of the Magic Kingdom Club. I have issues dating back to the mid-80's

Disney Magazine nears end of run
Published April 13, 2005

More big changes at the Mouse.

Disney confirmed for me Tuesday that it was shutting down its long-running Disney Magazine at the end of the month, with the last issue hitting newsstands this summer.

The company wouldn't spill much more. The appropriate veep, it seems, was tied up in meetings.

Apparently the last issue will cover the 50th anniversary of California's Disneyland -- and then, kaput.

You have to wonder -- again -- if this is more trimming in the name of almighty "efficiency." That was the explanation given twice last week -- both when the company laid off 25 people in Orlando and when it confirmed, after a certain columnist's quizzing, that it may outsource its information-technology jobs.

Disney Magazine is a quarterly pub with features on the theme parks, movies and anything else that would drive sales for the Mouse. The circulation is in excess of 1 million, though a chunk of that was freebies for season pass holders, I'm told.

No word on how many jobs will be affected, but probably few to none in Central Florida. The pub's editorial offices are in Northampton, Mass.

Jim Hill, who tracks all things Disney on his Web site (www.jimhillmedia.com), said the magazine has been around in one form or another for more than 40 years.

SPEAKING OF . . . that possible outsourcing, Disney still says no decision has been made about hiring a vendor to take over some of its domestic IT work.

But I can see why employees may think it's a done deal -- and fear losing their jobs.

The company is holding two-dozen resume-writing classes for IT workers in Orlando, New York and several cities in California, according to an internal e-mail.

The tech employees maintain computers and oversee software systems.

The classes began last week and are run by Drake Beam Morin, whose services include helping workers who are losing jobs.

Employees also told me Disney has said that, while it's not certain it will farm out its IT work, it has nonetheless narrowed the list of vendors to two -- IBM and Affiliated Computer Services, a Texas company. Neither company would confirm whether they were part of the bid.

But employees wonder why Disney would have a short list if outsourcing weren't all but certain. I'm told hundreds of jobs could be affected. Disney has said that, should it outsource, employees could be picked up by the new company.

Two months ago, Disney hired Tony Scott as its chief information officer. Scott, based in California, had worked in a similar capacity at General Motors.

Part of his responsibilities with the automaker included -- broadly -- working with that company's outsource vendors.

Some Disney employees see Scott's hiring as more evidence that the outside vendor question has been answered.

"Have they made up their mind? I think they have and most cast members think they have," said one IT worker in Orlando.

Did you all see the article linked at the bottom of Hill's page?

There may be enough uproar for the magazine to get a reprieve...

Mouse House department heads take issue with "Disney" Magazine's sudden closure
"Not so fast!," say various Disney VPs. Jim Hill reports how in-house complaints could possibly lead to a reprieve for this venerable publication.
by Jim Hill

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was NOT how executives at Buena Vista Magazines (I.E. The subsidiary of Disney Publishing Worldwide which -- obviously -- handles the company's magazines) had expected things to go down.

When it came to last week's sudden closure of "Disney" Magazine ... What these execs had been hoping for was that things would go pretty much the way they'd gone with last month's sale of "Discover" Magazine. As in: The media would basically ignore BVM's announcement that Disney was selling off this publication. And there'd be few (if any) complaints from the magazine's subscribers.

Well, obviously, that's NOT what happened with the shuttering of "Disney" Magazine. Since the news broke early Monday afternoon that this fan favorite was ceasing publication, the folks at Buena Vista Magazines suddenly found themselves in the middle of a firestorm.

By that I mean: The phone has supposedly not stopped ringing at BVM's New York offices since word initially began leaking out about "Disney" Magazine's sudden closure.

Mind you, it's not just the hardcore Disney fans who are calling to express their outrage & frustration with Buena Vista Magazine's decision to shut down "Disney" Magazine. Some very powerful (More importantly, some very angry) heads of other divisions of the Mouse House have also allegedly been calling in. Making it quite clear that they are furious that their departments were not consulted prior to this decision being made.

Why all the rage? Because these various divisions of the Disney corporation rely heavily on their ability to reach diehard Disney fans in order to sell their goods & services. And -- with "Disney" Magazine's unexpected closure -- a crucial line of communication has suddenly been cut off.

Given that there were reportedly some very heavy hitters calling in to express their anger & disappointment with Buena Vista Magazines' decision to suddenly shutter "Disney" Magazine (I'm told that among the Mouse House officials who chimed in were senior officials from Disney Theme Parks & Resorts, Disney Theatrical, Disney Consumer Products as well as Buena Vista Home Entertainment), there have been some rumblings that this publication might actually get a reprieve.

As of this moment, however, officials at Buena Vista Magazines are sticking to their guns. Insisting that they made the right decision to shut down "Disney" Magazine (Which -- occuring to BVM insiders -- only had a paid subscription base of 500,000) so that they could then focus their efforts on "FamilyFun" magazine (With a reported subscription base of 1.9 million) & "Disney Adventure" magazine (With a reported subscription base of 1.2 million). Not to mention that division's upcoming launch of "Wondertime" magazine, a brand-new publication aimed at the mother-and-child market. Which BVM hopes to have hit newsstands during the first quarter of 2006.

I've heard that the higher-ups at Buena Vista Magazines have supposedly been working the phones very hard over the past 36 hours. Trying to placate various VPs at the Walt Disney Company. Insisting that they made the right decision. More importantly, that these divisions of the Mouse House will still be able to reach the key customers that they crave by placing ads and/or providing fodder for features that can run in "FamilyFun," "Disney Adventure" and (eventually) "Wondertime" magazines.

But -- as the mainstream media begins to pick up on this story -- again there are those rumblings. Reportedly coming out from folks very high up in the Mouse House. Suggestions that BVM needs to get a lid on this crisis and fast. Why for? Because people in the Team Disney Burbank building are beginning to worry that the sudden closure of "Disney" Magazine could turn into a major PR disaster for the company.

"How so?," you ask. Well, let's consider that -- just in three weeks' time -- the media will be descending on Anaheim & Orlando. Hundreds of reporters flying in from around the globe to cover the launch of Disney's "Happiest Homecoming on Earth" celebration. Which (obstensively) is an 18-month-long event designed to celebrate Disneyland's 50th anniversary.

Well, how's it going to look if the Walt Disney Company -- with little or no warning to that publication's staffers -- suddenly shuts down one of the very first vehicles that the corporation successfully used to promote that theme park? Given that "Disney" Magazine (if you take into account its earlier incarnations, "Disney News" & "Vacationland" magazine) is almost as old as Disneyland ... Isn't that going to lead to some pretty awkward questions from reporters? Like "How can the Walt Disney Company be asking the public to come celebrate Disneyland's past when the Mouse seems so eager to shed important parts of its own corporate heritage?"

Okay. I know. That's a somewhat labored analogy. But it honestly isn't going to be as easy for Mickey to shrug off questions like that as one might think. Particularly given that the very last issue of "Disney" Magazine (I.E. The Summer 2005 edition. The one that DM staffers are currently putting to bed even as they pack up their offices) is virtually an 88-page valentine to Disneyland and the theme park's 50th anniversary.

Of course, what really isn't helping matters that the writers & editors at "Disney" Magazine are now reaching out to their friends in the media and beginning to talk about how short-sighted Mouse House management is, how furious various VPs at the Walt Disney Company are for not being consulted on the publication's closure, etc.

So will all of this extra heat & light on the "Disney" Magazine closure story be enough to earn that publication a last minute reprieve? Right now, it's pretty hard to say. But JHM will be keeping a close watch on this still-evolving situation. And if there are any interesting developments ... Well, we'll be sure & pass them along.

Your thoughts?

I want my Disney Magazine!!!!!!!!

Save Disney Magazine!!!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First the Magic Kingdom Club then the Disney Club and now the Magazine????

Disney really needs to REORGANIZE!!!!!!!!!!! It really confuses me how they are so quick to not only destroy jobs of most people that love that company and would do whatever possible to keep the magic going, but Disney corporate division that makes these ridiculous decisions are again taking from the general public that most of us enjoy these types of perks........and should have them. The magazine really is a great source of information, especially this year with the 50th Celebration coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tons to write about, that one, is a given, they can also maybe try some new different approaches to different articles? They can have a recommended readers poll in a upcoming issue or offer in each issue a discount coupon for Disney Deals or something for the parks??? This would be once again THANKING the consumer and show the appreciation to the customer and sell the magazine at the same time. OR now with pin trading going on and the 50th Celebration
how cool would it be to offer a special limited edition pin coupon, or a lithograph coupon etc etc etc the ideas are all there for the taking..........

We all should email or even write and try TO SAVE THE MAGAZINE!!!!!! It
really is just so sad, they should offer also a NEW REVISED DISNEY GUEST CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With different incentives..........................

But they need to give a little and a realistic coupon that really says THANK YOU to the consumer and they will see a change in the public......Right now I think would be a great time to throw out there a OMGosh DISNEY SURPRISE
50th CELEBRATION COUPON for something..............................I just think it would help and it would have to be used on ANY DISNEY ITEM.............maybe with a regular retail purchase and not sale item clause if they really had to go there?????

Well I for one will be writing away and trying to let them know we do not want to see another positive Disney item being taken away from all of us............
(Gone: Magic Kingdom Club, Disney Club, ????Magazine, Disney Local Stores
etc etc etc).............LETS GET BACK SOME MAGIC!!!!!!! We support them and deserve it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i called Disney Magazine last night. Spoke to a very polite woman, who said she had heard nothing about the magazine going under. I asked repeatedly, and she said no, would i like to add another year onto my subscription....

Weird.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean anything. Most magazines use fulfillment houses to answer customer calls & they wouldn't be in the loop until the management from the magazine tells them to change their information.

I like the magazine too but have never subscribed to it. If the subscriptions are down (I think I saw that somewhere in the thread) it would certainly have an impact on the financial viability of the company. I haven't seen any mention of the advertising revenue for the magazine? It apparently isn't enough to sustain the mag while trying to boost subscriptions.

I just subscribed on 26 March and wasn't told anything about the magazine folding up its tent and going away. Bummer. Guess the summer issue will be not only my first but also my last. :sad2:

Me Too!!!

I just signed up for two years

I literally crave that magazine~
I know when it's ready to come out~
I used it for my Christmas vacation~
I just used it for my March trip~

They really need to reconsider closing the mag-

Here's a thought!
If they do close it, are their enough talented DISers here that we could make a magazine of our own?

If selling it to another publisher who WILL run it is an option-they should put it out there!

I look forward to the hidden mickeys and trip contests and editorial pages and behind the scenes and the food, glorious food. What about park parades and premiers and interviews with the actors, behind the scenes and park tours & Dave! We can't leave out Dave!

Please Disney, if you're reading this,
Let us have our Magazine!

I will Cry if they cancel this mag. It is By Far my very favorite magazine on the planet. I SO look forward to it!!! :guilty:

I just renewed in February, how sad to hear of it's demise. This reminds me of another lost favorite {of DW and mine, anyway} of the Disney Channel magazine a number of years back. That was another great magazine that was free to subscribers of the Disney Channel when it was a paid channel. Once they added it to most basic cable systems, and then the channel went into the toilet entertainment-wise, the magazine became strictly a "teeny bopper" magazine, and then one day just ceased to exist. Criminy, who makes these decisions!? :confused3

Wow- I hope this doesn't happen. My daughter has gone crazy over this magazine for our upcoming summer trip. She read the last one over and over. Then she went to our local library and started scanning pictures to make Disney posters to hang all over her room. It would be sad if she couldn't continue to do this for other trips.

I just got an e-mail back from the Disney Magazine Customer Service (through their website). Lisa said that at this time she knows of know plans to stop publication.

I think there's hope!!!! :Pinkbounc

One interesting tidbit here - cds who is the fulfillment company, reportedly has no knowledge that the magazine maybe cancelled. ?

It was reported in the Orlando Sentinel LAST WEEK that the next issue, Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland would be the last........

Whether clearer minds prevail prior to that, who knows.

One can only hope........................

Many times when certain things are shutting down, employees are either not informed until the last minute, or they are instructed to reassure their customers that everything is fine and they're not shutting down. I remember this happening to a Disney Store up where I used to live...they were all told that they'd stay open, they told the guest that...and the very next week they were shut down. A coworker of mine at the TDS I now work for used to work for a restaurant some number of years ago (part of management) and she was informed that they'd be closing down but that she could not tell the employees and she had to reassure guests that everything was fine. A local restaurant here did the same thing this past Christmas. They were selling gift cards to people who were using them as Christmas gifts and acting like nothing was wrong (all their employees knew)...by mid-January, they were closed down. Lots of irate people.

So I usually don't trust the word of them saying it's not going to be cancelled...not until I see it actually continuing. Too many bad experiences, I guess.

I've been watching this thread a while and now it's my time to get flamed...

I love to hear people feel that they "deserve" to keep the magazine published. If you buy lottery tickets every week do you deserve to win?

I am a WDW AP holder, A DL AP holder, a DVC Member, a Disney stockholder. In the last year I have visited WDW(several times), DL, and DLP and I'm planning a trip to Tokyo and I may try to squeeze in a trip to Hong Kong too. I don't feel that I deserve anything.

You do realize that Disney is a publicly held company and not all shareholders are absolute Disney adicts as we are right? If you held shares in a company and every year one portion continued to lose money wouldn't you want to know why?

I have a friend who inherited 6000 shares of Disney and he goes over the annual report and bugs me about every line. This type of stock owner is the norm not the exception.

I have probably read every issue of Disney Magazine and would I miss it? Of course, but it is a business decision not a personal slight to all of its subscribers. Particularly with the internet I'm sure you can find better ride reviews, more pictures, more recipies and better movie reviews with clips. Is the magazine even that informative? I can't see how it could ever be profitable.

Maybe if you spent the millions of dollars to cover the publishing costs, the writers, photographers etc. you would deserve to have the magazine, but until then it is simply a business decision.

I did a search on this thread and only one poster used the word deserve. As I've read I've primarily seen people who are disappointed and people who hope it will stay. I, myself, hope that it does stay. Does that mean I do not understand business or that I want Disney to lose money? No, it means I'm a dreamer and I wish for things I want.

These boards are a place you can express your diappointment in the loss of a cool magazine and know that others who share your loss will sympathize. Other Disney dreamers like you.

I know that it will probably go away, but it would be great if some solution was found. I can dream...

It seems to me that someone else who was big at Disney was a dreamer too. Some Walt guy or something like that.

If this is true I will be upset, b/c they just cashed my 3 year renewal check last week. One would think that if the rumor is true, they would not cash any additional checks for renewals.
