Disney Made BIG Changes to Ticket Upgrade Policy! *UPDATE* - post #19

Sorry, still confused. I've been trying to figure this out today looking at various threads..

I bought 5 day park hoppers from UT the day before the ticket price went up. So if I use them one day and then add 3 more days on them, which of the following should take place:

1- I pay the difference between the current 5 day and the current 8 day gate price.

2- I pay the difference between the pre-increase 5 day gate price (ie-what I paid) and the current 8 day gate price.

3- pay the difference between what UT paid for the ticket and the current 8 day gate price.

4- something else.

Thanks for your help!

As I understand it, #2

According to UT, it would be #2 (the difference between the current gate cost of and 8-day ticket and the gate cost of a 5-day ticket on the day that you made your purchase).

If that holds to be true, there is no benefit in using the ticket once before upgrading because you won't be bridged to the current gate price of your 5-day ticket in any instance. You will only get the gate price that your ticket would have commanded on the day that it was purchased. You will still save the difference between what your paid UT and whatever the gate price was on that day.

The date UT "bought" the ticket (from Disney) or the date I bought the ticket from UT? That would suck if I could have saved more money spending the same amount 1 or2 days later.

I think that is not entirely clear yet, but I think it has to be the UT purchase date because I'm pretty certain that other date is not available to Disney.

I think you're right. I'm just thankful I can still get the "original" discount. So it sounds like I'm still get the discount between the original 5 day and the gate price 5 day, adding the day difference plus the price increase. That's better than nothing :)

And if I can verify that the first night I'm there before entering the park (rather than after I've gone in and potentially "lost" one of my days), that would be nice, too.

I bought mine the night before a price increase in 2012. Last week, my family's upgrade to APs was going to cost me about $468 at the parks. With this change, provided it all proves to be correct and true, that upgrade will cost $721. :sad1:

I think it's #1 because the policy went into effect with the price increase. So you're purchase wouldn't be subject to the new policy. But no one really knows yet.

Interesting... I hate not knowing yet ...

I don't think that tickets will be grandfathered if this turns out to be true. Disney did not "grandfather" pre-MYW tickets when they changed their ticketing structure. They rendered them non-upgradable. It would be a nightmare at the ticket booths and guest services going forward if CMs had to check each ticket being upgraded to see exactly when it was purchased and if it fell prior to the policy change or after that date.

In other news, according to another post on the TPAS thread the following reply was received from Disney after an email was sent concerning tickets purchased from UT:
For what it's worth, here is the reply I got from disney when I asked about this "new policy":

Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World® Resort.

We apologize for any confusion or frustration this has caused! You may
be happy to know that if it is within 14 days of a Magic Your Way theme
park ticket's first use and the ticket has remaining admissions, you are
able to upgrade the ticket. If it is more than 14 days after first use
or if no admissions remain, then a ticket may not be modified or
upgraded.

Upgrades may include adding more days or adding any combination of
options, including:

Park Hopper Option
Water Park Fun & More Option
No Expiration Option

Ticket upgrades must be made in person at any of the following locations
at Walt Disney World Resort:

Ticket windows at theme parks and water parks
Concierge desks at Disney Resort hotels
Guest Relations at the Downtown Disney Area

We look forward to seeing you soon!

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact
us.

Have a magical day!

Sincerely,

Now, that doesn't address the bridging question, but it does confirm what UT said about still being able to upgrade tickets purchased from a 3rd party.

And this was posted by UT on the same thread:
Hi There,

You can upgrade tickets. Disney wants you to spend longer in the parks :)

The change is that they will credit you the Gate Price at the time the ticket was bought. i.e. So if you buy a ticket, then there is a price increase a few months later, you will not receive the new higher gate price as a credit.

You can still buy tickets in advance, even if you do not know the exact number of days, just don't expect to get the new higher gate price as a credit should there be a price rise after you purchase the tickets.

Thank you
