I have no idea where to post this question. I do need an answer and maybe one of the mod's might know.

I am looking at buying the Brother brand embroidery machine. Brother has a licensed agreement with Disney that only licensed Disney designs can be bought and sewed out on a Brother D machine. These designs can not be bought or sold and there are restrictions in the embroidery machine that limit any changing of the designs. I even think they sew out Disney by the design. What you buy on that embroidery card is how it must be sewn out on garments.

I know I have a jacket I purchased at the Parks last Dec. that has a vintage Mickey on it and that same Mickey is in the Vintage Design Pack for Disney.

My dealer just told me that she heard that if you wear any of these home embroidery sewn designs on clothing into the parks they will make you take the clothing off (change). That seems odd sense they are licensed by Disney, you pay that licensed and you aren't selling it but just using what you paid for. I then explained about my jacket and the vintage Mickey so how in the world would they even know?

If you do a google search for Brother embroidery cards it is easy to find the Disney cards. They are also hefty priced, $95 a card. They have vintage, current movie characters, Pooh, vintage Pooh, almost all of the movie characters. I guess I just don't understand why Disney would even care, I have seen people wear clothes that have Disney stuff from a few years ago in the parks and it looks nothing like what they sell currently. Home embroidery is fun to do but it takes time to do one garment. Are they afraid that we might bring our machines on the trip and embroidery items for people? That have to be crazy to think that.

Any home hobby embroidery machine people out there? Any people received any home embroidery work with Disney and wear it into the parks? Do they really make people go back and change? These designs are made to put on polos, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jactets, shorts, pants, all are small and fit inside the 4" x 4" embroidery hoop.

If that is truely their policy then instead being afraid of losing money on a couple garments from the parks, they will be losing a lot of their premium licensed fees they charge for the cards! There are 16 design cards, a suggested retail price of $149, but the cheapest I have seen them is for $95 so 16 x 95 = $ 1,520.00 in cost if all design cards were purchased. If you had to pay the full suggested retail that would be $2384!!!

I just don't understand the logic in what the dealer told me. So, anybody out there know if they really would make the guest remove the home sewn embroidery work even though it was with the Disney licensed paid for? What about all of the home counted cross stitch designs that are from Disney? Did they make people remove those clothing items?

Thanks, Kathy

Kathy

Your dealer is mistaken.

I've had a machine for a couple of years and have know others who have had them for many years.

There are restrictions about selling items with the Disney logo, but there is absolutely no problem with your creating a design (or using one of theirs) to wear to the parks.

Just don't set up a stand and be trying to hawk them at one of the parks.:) :) :) :)

I would think the dealer is completely wrong.

There are TONS of homemade things that involve Disney and I have yet to hear anyone had to change their clothes.

There is a whole Creative Design board here that make designs you can put on shirts (iron on transfer paper) and people wear those to the parks.

On the Family board there is a thread for Custom/Boutique clothing where items are made with the Disney fabrics and appliques and I do believe some have the machine you are talking about.

I think the biggest issue would be you selling them but just for making to wear yourself, that would be just fine.

You can wear anything made on a Brother D machine anywhere. Howvever, Brother has confiscated machines when they could prove that the owners were selling items made on the machine.

like pp's said they can take your machine and anything else if you are caught selling disney items made with the machine

i would look on ebay for the cards. i know that they are expensive.

Thanks to all. I thought it sounded crazy that you could not wear the Disney home embroidery designs in the parks. As far as taking the time to create and sell items -- not me at all. I make items for gifts or family use only. I have created my own DCL logo. It is a life ring found on the OESD web site, I added Mickey ears and removed overlaps then added the Disney Cruise Line in a font that is similar to what DCL uses or at least use to use. I wish DCL used that logo design! but I have the one I made. Thanks again, Kathy

I'm very curious where you have heard this info. I've been involved with copyrights in my desktop publishing business (and took a couple of classes in it) and know someone who was involved with Disney copyrights (selling items). She got a cease letter. She did, all was well. I'm not sure how Brother would be involved. Disney yes, but why would Brother be the person to enforce Disney's copyright, anymore than Walmart would take away something because people sold something they sell with Disney on it like a needlepoint....it's not Brother's copyright.
