We are planning to take a trip to the Land Feb 2014, as long as we can swing the air fare from Ohio. Right now I'm looking at staying at the Candy Cane Inn.

As a first time visitor, would it benefit us to stay at one of the Disney hotels?

Also, I'm thinking if like to take a day and go to the Disney Family Museum. Doable?

Yes, it would benefit you to stay on site if they are still offering Extra Magic Hours for hotel guests.

You'll have to decide if spending the extra money is worth it to you.

The Candy Cane Inn is a nice property if you decide to go ahead and stay there!

The Walt Disney Family Museum is about six hours or more away from the Resort, so not really do-able as a day trip, unless you're planning on flying?

The museum is in San Francisco, 7 hours north of Anaheim.

Also, the Paradise Pier is fantastic, and worth looking into. It's a Disney property, but not as expensive as the Disneyland Hotel. As a family of 5, we LOVE the Paradise Pier. The Disneyland Hotel is our least favorite of the 3.

If money's not an issue, it's definitely worth it to stay at a resort hotel. This August however will be my first time staying off site in 10 years. DH is really frugal with money and this trip was sort of last minute. Ideally I'd rather stay on site, but we don't have the $$$ this time around.

Would you look at this one--Tropicana Executive Suite--we love this it has a king bed and a pull out, two rooms, two tvs--50 inch plasmas, balconies face the park and monorail.Great people watching. This is way closer than Candy Land, its by cross walk to the park.My son is a CM and he can walk to work and we can hook up with he gets off.It has two baths one with a big jacuzzi tub.

This room runs around $200 a night but it is awesome room, it will make some memories for you, close enough to come out for a bit.

Feb. has like two modes here--weekends have WOC and fireworks, weekdays small crowds short hours, lots of ride closures, much less crowded. To me during the week it is down right dull because of the early closing.

What Barry said about the crowds and ride closures is spot on. January/February is our favorite time to go...we love the low crowds. Some attractions will be closed, and for the one time visitor that could be a disappointment.

If you stay in a Disney Hotel you will get one hour of extra time each day, which is helpful. Since it is the "low" season, there could be discounts coming out later.

Weatherwise, it will certainly be warmer than Ohio. I like to dress in layers:
shirt, jeans, light or medium polar fleece (depending on how cold it is). We always tuck in rain ponchos and an extra pair of shoes in case of inclement weather.

Below are the park hours and schedule for typical days in February. Hopefully this might help you make your decision on timing. Here is a link for the entire week: http://www.wdwinfo.com/disneyland/park-hours.cfm?month=2&year=2013

Take some shorts, too, just in case!

We went in February 2002 and brought jeans and sweatshirts only because Jay Leno was making jokes the whole week before about how cold it was in LA. When we were there it was 70 degrees every day and the only pair of shorts I could find in the park where brown with Winnie the POOH on them for $30. Cute for a kid but a woman in her 30s? I wore them every day in DL and then never again... Ha ha.

Thanks for the tips everyone! Keep 'em coming!

Our anniversary is Feb 4, which is a Tuesday. I was thinking of flying out Saturday and flying home Wed.

Any suggestions for a romantic anniversary dinner?

I wouldn't do onsite for the 1hr earlier. Crowds are usually low so you will get in all the rides you want throughout the day unless you are going during presidents day weekend (pretty crowded).

The Disney family museum is very very fun. They have a theater where they put on a classic Disney movie everyday for a month. It might be a little boring for young children but upstairs they have a whole bunch of interactive things :D also if you do decide to go to San Francisco pick up some Chocolate chip cookies from mrs. Fields! They are to die for! One bite and it melts in your mouth located on the pier :D

And what about food?

And the Disney chat lady recommends either: Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel is wonderful! It is romantic and has an "old Hollywood" decor. And of course it's speciality is STEAK! Amazing steaks!

And there is the Napa Rose at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. It is an award winning restaurant that specializes in wines and seasonal menu

for our anniversary dinner.

Really depends on your preferences. Napa Rose is a more adventurous menu for sure. Steakhouse 55 is more for those who like traditional dishes. Napa Rose is probably recognized as the more gourmet restaurant, but if you prefer steak and potatoes, you might like Steakhouse 55 better. Have a great time!
