Not sure where to post this so here goes. We where needing info on the kennels at Disney. If anyone has used them what are they like and what are you required to do to set this up. We are not sure if we will be bringing the dog depend on if we can find a setter for them.
Thanks,
Shannon

I believe that you have to bring their shot records from the vet, their food, and then you have to visit them 2 or 3 times a day to exercise them.

I boarded a cat once--but I recall them saying the visits were necessary for dogs.

Their prices are super decent (as in same or cheaper than boarding at home). I know their is a kennel at MK that is convenient by monorail or bus to TTC, and their is one at FW if that is closer.

So if you bring doggy--be prepared to break up your days to arrange visits with him/her.

Lisa loves Pooh.....Thanks for the info. I searched and found all kinds of info. I think we are going to try and find a sitter around here. I don't know what I am going to do without my Tucker for a week.

I think that a trusted kennel close to home or a house sitter is less stressful to a dog than the kennels at WDW since the WDW kennels are cages. There is a kennel in Orlando that I read about on the boards that looks nice if you were going to be traveling with your dog. Good luck with whatever you decide. Make sure you visit lots of kennels to find the place that you are most comfortable with, if you do go with a kennel. I visited lots of places and now drive 45 minutes to get to it (ugh!) and pay an arm and a leg for 2 dogs (UGH!!!!), but they are a great kennel.

Here is a link to a thread about Disney kennels that was on the Budget Board a while back. It was a quite a shock to me to read about some very negative experiences some DISboard-ers have had with the kennels. Apparently they are not the kind of full-service boarding kennels most of us with pets are used to--they just basically keep animals in cages and the owner is responsible for much of the care.

Is there a trusted family member you could leave Tucker with? I have two wonderful dogs and we always leave them with my mother. This means we drive to another state heading the opposite way from Florida. But I know they have great care and are with someone who loves them. My female dog is a rescue who was kenneled for several months before we adopted her. There is no way I could put her in a kennel--she is too fearful. Based on our male dog's behavior, my vet recommended mild sedatives for him if he is ever kenneled. But strongly recommends them staying with family as we do.

You have to do what is best for your pet. For us it includes adding an overnight stop at my mom's and a 4 hour drive each way. And yes. I really miss my babies too!

Believe me Tucker will be much happier staying in Texas then traveling to Orlando to be stuck in a cage. One time when I got upset about leaving our lab the owner told me it is a vaction for the dogs too -- they get excited by all the excitement around them and not too worry. That made me feel a tiny bit better. Now our neighbor takes him to his house next door and just leaves him in our yard during the day - we have an invisible fence. I'm happier knowing he is in his own home sleeping on his own couch at night, even though I miss him.

I agree on leaving Tucker at home and admire your decision--
I had a cat and was on a college budget--it was cheaper to bring kitty with.

They do feed the animals I believe--but don't remember.

And of course cats don't require "walks" so that was helpful.

Doggy will not be happy--I have seen a few guests bring dogs--but they are day guests and hanging out with puppy midday is a nice break.

The facility looks "sanitary" if you catch my drift--clean cages and that is about it.

I was satisfied with my cat experience though.

There are kennels at TTC, FW, EC, AK & MGM. They are all really nice we frequent the FW one. The cms even know our pets name by memory by now. They are wonderful and very sweet to him. They will feed them for you or you can provide your own food. They do not walk them you will need to do that yourself. So planning on stopping whatever you are doing several times during the day to return to the kennel. You will need proof of vaccinations for cats & dogs, especially kennel cough otherwise they are must stay at TTC kennel in a special quarantined area. THe cages are large crates, double decker, some are double sized for two pets.

If you can I would try the at home solution.

Ask the vet techs at your vets (or another close by) if they do pet sitting. Many do for the extra money, and will come once to three times a day (generally with dogs it's twice) to walk, feed, and visit with your pet.

It's definitely les stressful to your pet to have them stay at home, and some vet techs will even "live in" for an extra fee, and take care of things like mail and plants as well.

Most have references from other customers, and all have some medical knowledge, which is always a good thing!
