I am planning a trip with my mother in Feb. 09. She will already be in Florida as she leaves Michigan for the winter. She has a dog and is already asking what type of boarding facilities are available. We most likely will stay at SSR for this trip so I wondering what kennel would be the best bet for her. Is it also true that you need to visit your pet at least 2 times a day?

We have never used the kennels. They were recently taken over by new management and have some new options available, however my recommendation would be to find a vets office off property that has boarding and doggy daycare services. It's very easy to find them with a simple web search. :goodvibes

We have used the kennels for our show dogs in the past when we traveled to Florida for a combination of dog show trips and Disney. We did have to visit the dogs a couple times a day to walk them, except that at one of the kennels, they had outdoor runs, and we could leave them there without having to excersise them. I can't remember which one it was though! It might have been the Epcot one.

We go to WDW every 6 weeks and we always take our dog with us to the TTC Kennel. I never minded the fact I had to go and walk her, but now you don't have to. They walk them 2 times a day and if want you can still go and see them. Before it was just a place for your dog to sleep, but now they will do it all for them. It more of a full service boarding facilty. No need to go off property anymore. The prices are as follows...

Dogs:
Overnight- Day guest $ 20.00
Overnight- Resort Guest $ 18.00
Overnight- DVC Member $ 17.00
Daycare- $ 15.00

Cats:
Overnight- Day Guest $ 15.00
Overnight- Resort Guest $ 13.00
Daycare- $ 10.00

Extra walk (2 Included) $ 5.00
Cuddle Time $ 5.00
Ice Cream Break $ 4.00

Medication is a $2.00 charge per administartion for owner supplied meds...

All pets must be checked out by 12:00 PM or they will be charged a full day charge....

I got this info off the flyer I picked up there. My dog will be staying there in March. The prices are a bit higher as you used to be able to stay there for 13.00 and there was no fee for staying later in the day.

Hi-

We used the newly converted kennel at Ft. Wilderness last week. While we miss the Disney ladies who used to work at the kennel we really like the new improved kennel. The facilities remain the same but the care is different. To start you can now make advanced reservations, something you could not do while Disney was in charge of the kennels. Secondly, two walks are included in the fee (morning and night) but you can visit your pet any time. I also understand that you may visit your pet after the kennel has closed-please speak with the folks at the kennel if you plan on doing this. Also, you can add additional walks for a charge.

We found the new employees to be both professional and friendly. (The ladies who worked in the kennel when it was run by Disney are no longer working in the kennel.) They even gave a report card to our dog upon check-out. (Our dog got straight A's...)

One thing to remember is although all kennels will be operated by this new company, not all of them will be walking your pet for you. If you use the kennels at either the Studios or AK, you will still have to walk your pet.

I believe that is just for right now. They said that all the kennels will be the same within a few weeks when I called to make a reservation for my dog in March. They gave me a date when this will happen, but I cannot remember it right this moment.

I am happy to hear this as we will be traveling with our dog in August..we are staying at VWL and the Ft Wilderness kennel will work great!!! I was so worried about leaving her here in NJ, now i dont have to!

Thank you for all the replies. My mother will be happy to hear that her baby will be well taken care of but won't have to be tied to visiting every few hours. Every time we go to Disney (2 times a year) my mother always asks "what is so special about Disney" so this will give me the opportunity to show her everything that is special about Disney.

Nice to hear the changes. We took our dog last year when we went and boarded him at the kennels outside MK. We went twice a day to walk him. Although we will probably still visit daily, it is good to know we won't have to in the future since a couple of those visits were late due to our park visit schedule.

Hi-

(The ladies who worked in the kennel when it was run by Disney are no longer working in the kennel.)

do you know where they went??

boy I need to go over there - went for 20 years with Spicey -then he died and I have only been back once.

I take it this mean Disney security no longer has access.

so if you are running late - I guess you need to call them>

We live in NJ and recently a kennell called "Camp Bow Bow" came into our neighborhood. We have used them for short visits and are absolutely soooooo satisfied with them. They are somewhat expensive, but the dogs get to go outside and their "rooms" are so nice and they do not nickle and dime you to death. They play most of the day. There is one in Orlando and if I needed to board her there in Fl that is definately the place I would check out. I live in NJ and also have a home in Fl and also a Son in an apartment in Florida, so I have been around the block with boarding our dog for a while now......have tried best friends/pet smart/and now Camp BowBow which is the winner for me. If you are not planning to visit your dog too often I don't see an issue with boarding them a little further away than you would in WDW.
I would rate them as follows: Camp Bow Wow -- first choice www.campbowbow.com
Pet Smart Hotel -- second choice
Best Friends ------ third choice

Good Luck with your decision.

OK here is my problem...i had a puppy sitter lined up for our trip on the Feb. 22nd... she is vey sick and can't watch our puppy, we are driving so i guess we will just take her with us and put her in the kennel when we are down there...the thing is she will only be 8 1/2 weeks....has anyone ever boarded a puppy that young before??? I mean i will go and visit a few times a day, but i just hope she will be ok....do they have somewhere for the dogs to play or do they just sit in a cage all day until it is time for their walk???

not sure about the new kennels - but the other one had outside kennels you could do.

now this is florida and inside is generally better.

I know when Disney was doing it - sometimes they would let the non-aggressive dogs play together. when they were cleaning the cages.

but only non-aggressive - if your pets growls or tries to bite - then no.

but don't know about the new guys.

spicey was sick when he was a kitten - so I took him with me to WDw when he was 9 weeks - he did fine. Since I was feeling bad about him in a cage visited about every 3 to 4 hours - all day (I think then it was open an hour before the parks and hour to two hours after the park) so then the days could be 14 hours - and believe me he did fine.

now he did not like the outside at TTC - but he was a cat. Loved and I mean Loved FW. Also like Epcot. He found the turtles there - that stopped his trips to steam over by the kennel. no pets are allowed here now.

I am a dog breeder/exhibitor, and I would NOT take a puppy that young to a public kennel of ANY kind. First of all, you can't be sure of their vaccinations, because they haven't had the whole series yet, and with pups, you never know WHICH round is the one that actually vaccinates them unless your vet does titer citrates. I'm not even sure they will allow a puppy that age to stay. I would contact your breeder and see if they can take the pup during your vacation time. I have done that numerous times for puppy buyers, because it just is not a safe health choice to expose them at that age. Besides that, they are right in the middle of the fear imprint stage at 8 1/2 weeks, so anything negative that happens in that time period will be with them the rest of their lives. I can not stress enough NOT to do that.
