I've been searching the internet for some alternate family vacations. I figured since every thing is so high maybe it was time to cut back.

Jeez,
In Ocean city Maryland 1 week at a average oceanfront hotel during July and August seems to be running any where between $1800-2000 bucks. :scared1: Virginia Beach. same deal. and if you think Disney's deluxes are not really deluxes, these hotels aren't even moderates. This is just for the room, no food, no attractions nada...

Disney ain't looking so bad.

I never understood why people thought Disney was so expensive...we never spend over $2000 for a week and have a great time! We can't find anywhere nearly as fun for under $3-4k!

I totally agree with you. I looked into several different vacation options and everything was just as high if not higher than Walt Disney World.

We drive to WDW and stop the first night at a hotel along the interstate. The cost of that room is $75.00 or above. That's just for a plain jane room along the interstate.

What a lot of people don't understand is that once you are in a Disney theme park, you can do whatever you want, as many times as you want, all day long....for that single admission price. When you divide the price of one day's admission by the number of things you do in one day's time (some over and over again), the cost is not that bad.

Our local county fair comes around every September/October. The cost of a ticket is 75 cents. The small kiddie rides require 3 or 4 tickets each. The adult/teenager rides take 5 or 6 tickets. That's a pretty steep price to ride just one ride. And, that's just a ferris wheel, tilt-a-whirl, etc. There are no preshows or animatronics. Just a two or three minute ride.

I also get tired of people talking about how expensive the food is at WDW. My daughter went on a ski trip in Colorado last Winter. The cost for a single slice of pizza was $11.00. That did not include a drink or side item. We went to Six Flags and the cost of a burger was $9.00 and that was just a burger and fries.

I don't know about everybody else but if I want to pay those prices for food, I would like to pay those prices at WDW and be sitting in an atmosphere that I absolutely love.

Unless the prices at WDW change super drastically, our annual vacation will always be a WDW vacation!

I agree!!!!! We were looking into a 8 day trip to the east coast from Boston to Philly but between hotels, food, airfare, and tickets into historical locations, museums,etc..it is actually about 1800.00 CHEAPER to do disney WITH the DDP!!!!!!!;)

I agree. I just had this conversation with DH. He was insisting that it was too expensive to go to DW, let's go someplace else. Boy was he surprised to find out that we consistantly spend more on other vacation destinations than a Disney vacation. Needless to say, I handle the money in the family ;) DH doesn't have a clue! Anyway, our last vacation was to Plymouth Mass, just the cost of the house we rented was more than an entire week at DW. We don't do Disney every year, there are so many places that we want to go. But I really look forward to our Disney vacations :cloud9: and appreciate the value of a Disney vacation.

All we need to do is go to the NASCAR race here in Atlanta (and prices are the same for most tracks). For a small Domino's pizza, it's $24! That's barely a snack. A bottle of water is $4! I think a turkey leg is $8. To stay at a barely adequate Super 8 fifteen miles from the track is $113/night. Front stretch tickets for just two races are $400/person.

We're going to Disney World for my birthday next weekend and we will not even come close to what we will be spending at the race next month.

My DH was complaining about the cost of our annual WDW vacation. We always stay at a Value or Mod with 7 day hoppers and DDP in the beginning of Dec. So to humor him I looked into other all inclusive vacations such as Beaches or Sandals Resorts. HOLY COW!!! $11,000 for a family of 5 - three of which are under 5 years old and no airfare included. Once I showed him the numbers he agreed, you get a lot of bang for your buck at Disney. Not to say we don't desire to ever vacation anywhere else, but Disney will always be a family favorite.

I had my travel agent quote me a package for Hawaii and OMG it was way more expensive than Disney! :scared1: I'll plan to get there one day, perhaps when Disney opens up their Ko Olina resort and I'm making much more money then. But for now, WDW will have to do--which is okay with us. :thumbsup2

I'm SO with you guys on this one! ;)

There is so just much flexibility with a Disney vacation as far as what you spend and the activities to choose from. Most of my friends (and family for that matter) look at me like I'm a nuts when I tell them that we're going back yet again. The funny thing is that I honestly think they're nuts for thinking it's a "been there, done that" kind of place!

We went to Hilton Head last summer and even with 3 free nights (Starwood Points) at the Westin, we spent way more money on food, etc. I just feel so much better after dropping $100 at Chef Mickey's than I did at the Hilton Head Diner!:confused3

I completely agree with you. I've looked into Hawaii since we're on the west coast and no way! For a family of four it is just too cost prohibitive. Maybe when the kids grow up and move away, but right now I am saving for my next Disney vacation. For me, it is the best bang for my Canadian buck.:thumbsup2

Exactly why DD and I are going to WDW in June instead of our usual 3 day trip to Ocean City. I was looking for a hotel for our trip to OC and for 3 nights everything (and these aren't even the nice comfy hotels, more the get-by motels) would have been over $400 for 3 nights! Add in meals and activities, etc - would have cost me more than the 3 night trip we are taking to WDW, and wouldn't have been as much fun! Granted - Disney can be expensive, but when you break it down like this, it dosen't seem so bad - and heck, is A LOT more fun!

My husband learned this the hard way. We were looking for a get away for before we moved to Italy. He was thinking of the huge expense of WDW and decided Myrtle Beach was a cheaper choice. :rolleyes1 Mind you, we are not beach people. Anyway, by the time we paid for hotel and the eating out and then our son got addicted to all day mini golf hopping, it probably cost us more for the MB vacation than if we had just gone to WDW. WDW might have been cheaper...lol. WHOOOPIE! We spent a week in a hotel on the beach and never touched foot on the beach. We stayed in a crummy hotel and spent each day playing mini golf. Would have been more fun at WDW.

1) Just making sure we see the same things.
2) Depending on the resort, eyesight can be strained.
3) My view is a little different.

I agree with everyone that WDW is cheaper than a lot of vacations. I guess it just seems like more because you are paying for everything up front. When you "pay as you go" for food and entertainment, it doesn't seem as much--at least until you get home.

And the food at Six Flags is horrible! I think the worst burger I ever had was there!

OMG, I am totally with all of you on this. My DH and I will be celebrating our 10th anniversary next year and we want to do a couples only vaca to celebrate it. My DH asked what I wanted to do, so of course I said DW. He would have nothing to do with that because we just were there this past June therefore he wants to go somewhere else. So he looked into some All-inclusive resorts and WOW they were more expensive than WDW by a long shot. Of course since my DH is so bullheaded sometimes, we will probably spend the extra $$$$ just to stay at a resort that is on a beach, which we could do at the Poly or BC and still have fun at WDW...we could have the best of both worlds.

I agree with you. We've never taken the kids to OC. I loved it as a kid, but I have no interest in going there now. We are no longer week-at-the-beach people and I think we would go crazy looking for things to do. I feel I get more bang for my buck at WDW. There is something for each of us. We try to find something new to do every trip. I never understood it either when people ask why we are going back again? These are the same people who go to the same beach every year. :confused3

And the cost for admission is a only little higher at WDW ($76 for a one day ticket) compared to Hershey Park in PA ($48 for a one day ticket). And they are worlds apart in what they offer.

I agree -- WDW can be a bargain compared to some other venues. HOWEVER, don't delude yourself into thinking it's cheap A family of 5 going in April, with 2 rooms, air fare, admission tickets, is spending $6,000 before they even go into the parks! That's not cheap.

Oh not at all. I know it's not cheap, but after researching the last 2 weeks for this years family vacation I'm not sure there is really any thing as a "Cheap" vacation outside of staying home. So if I'm going to have to spend a couple of thousand dollars I'd like to at least get the most for my money. From all the post about how fed up folks are with the Disney's prices I kinda thought there were thousands of places out there to vacation inexpensively.
Even the all inclusive resorts in Mexico, which I thought would be alot cheaper than disney are not...
