Disney Insurance (with a package)

So I'm clear on what the insurance covers (I think), but what if your package changes - say you want to add another day? or cancel all together? I'm assuming you lose the cost of the insurance. Is that correct.

Can you switch hotels (assuming same dates)?

Also, can you add the insurance later? Let's say I book a package now for Fall of next year without it but once we are absolutely sure we can go (I have paranoid thoughts about DH losing his job) could we add the insurance around the 90 day mark?

I'll try calling Disney as well but wanted to hear the DIS experience too!
