Disney in 3 months; blood clot issues

Three months from today, we'll be eating breakfast with Donald Duck at Tusker House.

My question is regarding the trip down (and if you think this is better in the Transportation forum, please move.)

I just got out of the hospital last week. They discovered blood clots in my leg that spread to my lung. Fortunately, the clots are all gone, but I'll be on blood thinners for the next six months.

When the doctors asked if I had done any heavy travelling, I had to answer "yes." In the previous two months we drove to:

1) Nashville (500 miles round trip) for my daughter's wedding.

2) Wisconsin Dells (about 1,100 miles round trip) for vacation.

3) Cleveland (500 miles round trip) for my nephew's wedding.

4) Carter Caves, KY (about 300 miles round trip) for a camping trip.

So, yes I've been doing a lot of travelling. And I missed a (much anticipated) crochet convention in Indianapolis (200 miles round trip) due to my hospital stay.

Doctors think being in the car for long periods helped caused my blood clots. During our trips, we did stop the car every 2 1/2 hours to stretch.

My question...since I'll be about 3 1/2 months rmoved from my clotting incident, how often do you think we should stop? And for how long?

There will be three drivers and one 4-year old (turns 5 during the trip). Of the three drivers, I'll probably do no more than about 20-25 percent of the driving. It's 900 miles one-way, and we're taking two days (leaving about 4 AM the first day, and driving about 650 miles; leaving about 6 AM the second day and driving 250 miles, hoping to make it into the parks by noon).

Coming home, again we'll break it down 650 miles (probably leaving about 6 AM) and 250 miles (probably leaving mid-morning).

In my condition, is this feasible? We can't afford to fly. And I don't want to fly down and back by myself. After all, my DGD views her Disney videos on my tablet. :lovestruc

As always, many thanks.

Honestly, I think this is a question for your doctors, not for people on a message board. This isn't so much a logistics question as it is a medical question.

Sorry about your problem. Please ask your doctor for recommendations when traveling.

Thanks for the responses. The doctors know I'm going to WDW, and they think I'll be OK. I'll ask them about how often.

I did suggest a trip to North Carolina a couple of weeks earlier (another crochet convention to make up for the missed one), and they highly suggested against it.

Perhaps you could be in the front passenger seat for most of the trip. That might offer you the most leg room, and perhaps ask for some leg exercises or just do frequent leg flexes and movements. Perhaps when you stop for breaks, you could spend most of that time walking around and let others get the food, pump the gas etc. If you do sit down meals, take your DGD for a walk while the others wait for the food, and then take another short walk while they pay for the food.
Good luck and prayers for a safe trip.

I remember from when I was in the Army we were told that after the first hour we should stop for at least five minutes every hour and walk around.

i would definitely discuss with your dr. my daughter has had same clotting issue twice. her dr told her for our driving vacation to stop every hour and walk. with our flying vacations, she was told to get up and move around often if she could. also no caffeine and don't cross legs or ankles.
