We'll be there.....I've been trying all morning to get more information about the classes, but I keep getting a busy signal. What are the ages of your kids, and what classes are you signed up for?

My girls are 11 (twins) and we want to sign up for the Ocean Discoveries...and possibly the Technology.

We have an AP for this trip since we'll be in Florida for a month and spend the majority of it in Disney....so I'm also needing to find out if the price is less because we won't need a ticket into Epcot.....did you happen to ask this question and get an answer?

I don't think this will increase the crowds by any significance....it certainly didn't at DisneyLAND....and that was advertised at a major convention just two months before. We wouldn't be going to the one in Epcot just for it, since we live on the other coast...but by some coincidence we arrive on January 10 and it's on the 14th, lol.

The parks may be a bit heavier those days anyway, since the marathon is the 12/13...some people may stay after the marathon, though I've also heard that all the "events" leading up the marathon as the week BEFORE, so most people will likely be leaving after the run.

But...I've also read all the guidebooks and the people here and January/February (until President's week, as we leave just before then) are slow anyway, so I doubt even a few thousand homeschoolers will make it busy. I'm hoping WDW is like DL at that time....the big waits are 10-15 minutes, and the rest of the stuff is walk on (or stay on and ride again). When we were at DL during slow season the girls stayed on the Carousel for at least a half dozen rides, until I got bored sitting there and told them to get off, lol. Then we had lunch and stood in line for Peter Pan for 10 minutes.....one that everyone warned us to do first thing in the morning because otherwise the line was hours.

Ahhhhh, another favorite perk of homeshcooling....vacationing when the weather is pleasant outside, no sweating involved......rates are cheaper, lines are shorter. THAT is vacation, not that thing others do in July, lol. We tend to do most of our schooling from June to September (we're in Arizona and you don't want to be outside then)....and play a LOT in the rest of the months with school thrown in where I can (and before someone wants to flame me...I throw school into almost everything we do, including our trips to DisneyLAND and upcoming to WDW...the kids just don't realize it).

Hi, new Disboards member and fellow homeschooling mom, here!
Can anyone direct me to a website that has info. on the Homeschool Days at Epcot...what activities they are having, the times, and how to register? I have not heard about this before.
Thanks so much!

That sounds like a great program. I'm seriously considering homeschooling my youngest son next year. This just might give me that final nudge. Does Disney offer special package deals for the homeschool families that week?

The website with all the info is:

http://disneyyouthgroups.disney.go.com/program/show/23?subdid=38&CMP=OTC-DisHomeSchoolDaysGenVan

The phone number I called, and I just called it 5 minutes ago and they answered right away is 877-939-6884

Apparently I made them realize this morning when I called at 9am that the ticket packages were not listed for purchase on the website. You have to purchase the tickets on line and the only ones available were the single days with the Y.E.S. program included, and the additional Y.E.S. programs which are $24.00 each.
The manager is emailing me today when they have the package prices ready, and she told me the packages will be available to purchase this Wed. online.
Hopefully the package prices won't be too much more than advertised in the flyer I got from Disney.
I am so excited about going. We have been every year since our first visit in Oct. of 2003. We were going to skip this year, but with those prices I can't pass it up!
My son is interested in the Everyday Chemistry class, but the Ocean Discoveries sounds great too. We might do both. He is 11 1/2 and my two little ones are 5. They are all very excited! What a great opportunity for homeschoolers!!!

The email I got from Disney listed a Disney Homeschool Days package (The one we are going to get - the biggest one) is only 160.00 for 5 park hopper day tickets and 4 water park/option tickets!!!
What a deal.
When I called this morning to purchase the tickets, they said I couldn't get the package with the Homeschool days, but the manager said they were going to offer it, and they are figuring out the prices today and will let me know. I hope they aren't going to be too much more than the email stated!

I called earlier today - we don't need park admission since we have APs.

They told me to attend the class it would be $16/child.

I'm confused because I just got an email that said registration was going to be available mid-November! Then I went to the site to check, and you can register and buy tickets right now. What's going on? I guess I'll wait to see what kind of packages they offer before making any decisions...

Yes, I talked with the ticketing manager today and she said the packages will be available to purchase this Wednesday.

Ok, I called three times in order to find someone who at least sounded like they knew what they were talking about.....spoke with Paul

It's a LOT more than just the YES classes....in fact, those are considered an "add on".

Both days are pretty much the same (though the YES classes vary). IF you already have an Annual Pass (or other admission ticket) and therefore don't need the entrace to Epcot, the cost for Homeschool Day is $16. (with admission to Epcot only is $43.15). This includes ONE day admission into the special "backstage" part of Epcot where Homeschool Days is held......admission to BOTH of the Speakers (one on Around the World with people talking about growing up in their country and adapting to life in the USA; the other is on the science used at WDW everyday). It also includes a self-guided workbook guide (more on this later).

The tenative schedule (he said it's what they did in years past, but there is no official schedule out yet) has the Day going from 9am to 4pm. There will be different interactive areas, booths, etc...he likened it to a convention, but a lot more fun. At 11am will be the first speaker.....at noon the second speaker. IF you sign up for a YES program, it will start at 1pm and go until 4pm. If you aren't signed up for the YES, then you can explore more of the backstage interactive areas....or.....use the workbook to explore World Showcase. Based on his knowledge of last year's workbook, it will guide you through the different countries, telling you to look for this or that, and tell you what to ask CM's to learn more about the thing you were looking at/for. There are also quizzes to go along with what you learned. The workbook does NOT have to be used that same day (I was concerned about only 2 hours to explore the backstage, then speakers, then the YES classes). They do plan to have extra CMs on hand in each land those two days, but said even if you use it later in your stay, it's self guided and the CMs all can answer your questions even weeks after (we'll be there a month so I wanted to be sure it wasn't something I needed to purposely schedule a day for us to do...we'll probably just bring it along each time we go to Epcot and do a little of it and little exploring on our own).

If you want to do a YES program, the cost is $24.00. You can only do ONE YES program each day, because they are scheduled for the same time 1pm - 4pm. If you want to do two YES programs, then you also have to pay the $16 (or $43.15 if you need another admission ticket) for the other day. The $16 gets you into the backstage area, which is required to get into the YES programs. You'll have a wristband good for the day so you can go out into the rest of Epcot and come back into the Homeschool area all day. NOTE: The $43.15 admission to the park plus Homeschool is NOT a hopper ticket, and you can ONLY go to Epcot with it.

PARENTS: If parents want to go into the backstage area with their children, you have to pay the $16 fee (I asked if it was reduced since I don't need a workbook....nope). If you want to attend the YES program with your child, you have to pay the $24 fee. He said parents can drop their children off if they want and the kids can explore the Homeschool area (not supervised by WDW) and go to their YES program (which is supervised by WDW).

IF you have a group of 10 or more, you do get a free ticket for the chaperone. I guess if you have a lot of kids, lol.....or more likely if you have a local homeschool group that is going, otherwise everyone has to pay. I asked about this in case it was a better deal, thinking we could do a DIS group...but one free, well, dividing that up between the rest of the group means you'd save about $4.00. Not worth the logistics to set up a group.

NOW...this is SIMILIAR but not exactly the same as the typical public school programs.....the public school programs REQUIRE a minimum of 10. The public school programs do NOT have the interactive area, nor the speakers. However....the public programs have 24 different YES programs to choose from, the homeschoolers only have 4 choices. Homeschoolers are welcome at the public school programs, provided they have a group of 10 or more. The public school days there are more than one YES program going on each day...in fact he said they overlap......made it sound like highschool where you had to pick your courses and fit everything in, lol.

Ok....I think that's all......if I remember anything else I'll edit this.

I went ahead and signed my daughters (age 11, twins) and myself up for the Ocean Discoveries program on January 15. It was $120 total, and you get the option of paying $10 to have them mail the workbook and other information to you, or pick it up at Will Call for free. (There were 5 or 6 options of where to pick up the items, including one in DTD so you didn't have to pay to enter a park to pick it up). We chose to pick it up because Paul said they usually mail them "a couple weeks before" and we'll be arriving in Florida the week before, so I don't want to risk them arriving at my house after I've left! Plus....$10 is a lot for shipping a couple workbooks. Might be different if we'd get the workbooks NOW so we could use them to supplement the lesson plans I've made for us to study each country.

Ok...so who else has signed up for the 15th Ocean Discoveries????

The girls also wanted to do the Technology one, which means we might go back and sign up for the 14th and this one....but we had planned the 14th as our first day in WDW and have ADR's at 8am for Crystal Palace, and I didn't want to mess with those, lol....our first time in WDW and we'd be able to walk down Main Street, see the Castle with very few other people around. Priceless. (Ok...there was a price, but you know....)

Yes, I talked with the ticketing manager today and she said the packages will be available to purchase this Wednesday.

Just an FYI...they are available right now....I paid for ours a couple hours ago....and the packages were listed, though I didn't check them because we already have AP vouchers for our trip.

Go to disneyhomeschooldays.com
Click the Yellow "Buy Tickets Now"
A new page opens....you have to check acknowledging that tickets are non-refundable, non-transferable...blah blah blah....
Next page you want to check the last in the list "Homeschool Days"

About 1/4 down in blue is the dates....watch them carefully, lol....but the first box is the packages (admission, guide and Speakers) for $42 (tax is added to THIS because it includes admission....the non-admission choices and YES programs there is no tax added).

If you don't need the admission, then enter how many you need at the "Program Fee" for whichever day. $16

If you want to do a YES program (not required) then enter how many you need....watch the dates carefully, as you MUST buy a program fee for the day of your YES program....so be sure they match.

The next pages you'll enter your name, etc information and the final page you'll pay.

I went ahead and printed out my confirmation page, but you could probably just write down the number too. I just printed it and stuck it with my AP vouchers. They also sent me an email with it, but the email didn't print as nicely.

Yes, the Y.E.S. packages are available, but the packages I were referring to are not yet. Right now you can only buy the individual days, and I am waiting for the multiple day park passes package. It is called the 5 day premium package for $160.00, that is what will not be available until this Wednesday.

Thanks for all the details about the classes and what they do exactly at the Homeschool Days. When I called this morning I was all about getting the multiple park days tickets. It is going to be so great. We might sign up for the Ocean Discoveries too, it sounds fun. Right now he definately wants to do the Everyday Chemistry on the 15th.

So is that 5 days at Epcot only....can't imagine it is, but can you give details. I've gotten a couple of PMs asking me questions and it sounds like you have more information than I do.

HI. Thanks for all the info you've all posted. I'm new to this and was wondering what the ages are recommended for. My DD is 6 and my neice is 7. Would this be appropriate for them? We are all ready going to be at the world that week. So if it would be good maybe I should do it. Is it worth it to just do the the backstage area? What kind of interactive things have they had there in the past? I don't imagine my girls would be too interested in a speaker?? But what do you all think?

ETA- I see that the synergy in science program (is that a YES program) is for grades 1-5. So I guess that is the only one they could go to. But as for the rest of the backstage stuff is there a lot to do? Thanks!

As you discovered only one of the YES programs is geared for that age. I would call them (1-877-343-5387) and ask more specifics about what is happening in the Homeschool Days part of the event. You know them best...do you think they'd enjoy sitting for an hour listening to someone on a stage talk about their life in another country? If not, then the speaker part wouldn't be of interest to them either, so that leaves only the tables/booths/interactive....so you're going to want more specifics about what that program entails.

I haven't yet seen anyone post that they went last year, so I don't know if we're likely to get much first hand reports or not.

If you go to WDW every year then you might want to wait another year or two....I'm grateful that WDW picked the right time for us....it'll be our first time to WDW ever....and because we live on the west coast, I'm guessing we may not go again for a couple of years. But...my girls are the perfect age....11...so all the programs are for their age group.

thanks! I think I'll mention this to my sister and see what she thinks of it. I'm not homeschooling my DD yet. But my niece is homeschooled. So she may be more interested in making the phone call. LOL! I hate making phone calls! But since we have AP's all ready the $16 to go backstage isn't that bad. Maybe my DH could take my DD3 and go have some special time with her and we could go check it out.

I wonder if my DD's school would give me any kind of credit for taking DD there? At least maybe not the hate mail I'm going to get for pulling her out of school!

Thanks again!

So is that 5 days at Epcot only....can't imagine it is, but can you give details. I've gotten a couple of PMs asking me questions and it sounds like you have more information than I do.

What it is is 5 regular park hopper tickets and 4 tickets to the water parks or Disney Quest, etc. So you get a total of 9 days worth of parks for an amazing price. Normally for our family that would cost $1800.00, but it will only be half that with the Homeschool package!!!
When I talked to her today she said they were changing some prices to include the Y.E.S. classes, so it might be a little higher. I guess I will have to wait until Wednesday to find out, or maybe tomorrow - she didn't email me the prices today. I hope they are still really affordable, I just booked our rental home a couple of hours ago!!!!!!!:)
By the way, what is an AP voucher?

Boy I wish I had known about these dates. We go in January, but not till the end of the month. We just started homeschooling our DS5 so , he may be too young for some of this, but I will keep this in mind for next year!

another question. Can someone tell me (just playing devils advocate here) what is to stop non-homeschoolers from saying they do homeschool and getting these reduced ticket prices and perks?

I mean Disney is a big place so what do I care I guess but was just wondering how that worked? Other amusment parks in our area have homeschool days and they require documentation to get the special pricing?

Now before you all flame me, let me say this. I have graduated 2 homeschoolers. One is married to our wonderful homeschooled DIL who is now homeschooling our wonderful DGS! The other homeschool graduate is serving in Cambodia on a missions team as part of his college Internship. I also still have 4 children at home, 3 of which are homeschooled and a little one (DD2) who studies and learns more than all of us combined I think!

so I'm not trying to cheat the system in any way. Just asking a question.

This is the first I've heard of this program and as I was looking for an affordable way to get us back to Disney sooner than planned (LOL) and haven't planned out Christmas presents yet. . .I'm just saying! It sounds really good to me! And Epcot is our favorite park!

thanks so much "theparsons" and "earthfares" for all the info.
