DOes anyone know where gift cards can be purchased besides online? Like City Hall? Or the resorts? I'd much rather do that them bring a lot of cash along.
If you have a Disney store near you, you can purchase them there. We also have them at our local Vons stores, but I don’t know if that’s because I live in So Cal. At the resort you can purchase them at pretty much any store. I am also pretty positive you can purchase them over the phone through Disneyland DelivEARS (1-800-760-3566). I reload my cards over the phone through them, so I’m sure you can purchase a card and they mail it to you just like you would online.
We use gift cards a lot in DL and WDW. We've always been able to use them anyplace where they have a machine to swipe credit cards (which is just about everywhere, even churro carts ). Sometimes, the cards to not "swipe" so the CM has to key in the number on the back, but other than that, GCs have been a convenient alternative to cash and credit/debit cards.
You can also buy them at just about any store inside Disney, and at WOD. They all have displays of giftcards at the registers!
The main areas that can't take the cards (other than non-disney stores of course, like Lego (though Lego can take Disney Dollars!) of course) are vendors like balloon sellers, the true stand-alone, roll-along carts for ice cream and cotton candy...things like that. I have yet to find a spot that sells Mickey Bars where I can use a giftcard (and those moments alone away from my family that cannot have those bars when I can snag one are brief, so it's a disappointment), but other than that and the occasional need for a balloon, we rarely need cash (other than for tips at the hotel).
We also love the GCs because they don't expire and you can use them on disneyshopping, if you don't use 'em all up at the parks.
Thank you all for your suggestions and ideas! So appreciated! We leave early Sunday morning and want to be able to grab a card or two as soon as we get there.
