Hey :)

I am from Australia, and heading to the US in 2 weeks - this may be a silly question but I have seen a few threads on the gift cards, and wanted to know honest opinions. We will be at Disney for 12 days and I will shop, and I will have a car, and be in Vegas and LA before Disney - Do you know if there will be any sales on the gift cards? Do they have to be registered? If I am not a US citizen can I buy them if they are discounted?

Thanks! Just trying to save any money so I can make my experience more magical :)

Anyone can buy Disney gift cards without id or proving citizenship. That being said depending on your payment method you may have to show id to the cashier to prove you are the authorized cardholder, check writer, etc.

Usually gift cards never go on sale unless it's a bonus to them. Buy this much in gift cards and get a discount off your next purchase, gas points to use at our gas station, etc. But those are at other stores never at the Disney stores themselves.

Some place always have them at a discounted price but they require more than just walking in as a one time shopper to purchase them, i.e.: Targets red card, Sam's club membership, etc.

Like the PP said, anyone can by Disney gift cards regardless of citizenship. The problems are whether you can find any good deals that coincide with your trip and are available to you without a US-issued credit card or address. Various gift cards go on sale periodically, but I can't recall ever seeing Disney Gift Cards on sale at third party retailers and certainly not at the Disney Store.

If you look into the Disney Gift Card Deals thread, you'll learn that a lot of the savings on Disney Gift Cards comes from working the various discounts and bonuses offered by third party retailers, e.g., first buying discounted gift cards to retailers like Target or Best Buy, which sells Disney Gift Cards, or to eBay to buy Target or Best Buy gift cards to then use to buy Disney Gift Cards. However, many of these discounted gift cards are mailed to you and would probably require delivery to a US address. Another major source of savings is to use Target's REDcard to get 5% off the purchase of Disney Gift Cards, which people often combine with their savings from discounted Target gift cards. Sam's Club also sells Disney Gift Cards at a small discount, but requires a membership to make any purchases. As an Australian resident, I don't think you'd be able to sign up for a REDcard or Sam's Club membership to access these savings. Many US-issued credit cards also offer special deals and bonuses that people have learned to use to maximize savings.
