This was my solution for my kids. 1st day at Disney I gave each kid x amount of money and told them this was there money for the week once it was gone it was gone. If they wanted souviner or ice cream or candy they paid. If they wanted something I would say we will be here 4 days do you want to think about it and we will come back or we wont be back this way again etc.

We did this every vacation , it was wonderful. No can I have this or that, they knew if they wanted to spend the money for it they could get it. We would count the money at night or in the morning , it was fun to do. They always came home with money

now that my kids are a bit older (last trip they were 4 and 6yo, now 7 and 9) and understand spending vs. saving and frivilous spending vs buying what you really want, we've decided to give them each a set amount of disney dollars... anything they want that is not part of the family plan (for us ice cream is a family thing! LOL!) they will have to use their own money... we are also reserving our last day to do all the things that someone wanted to do and did not get to (a fave ride or attraction, boating, whatever) and will then revisit any gift shop for an item that they were considering but did not buy (esp the first day) and now want/can afford...

hopefully this will work for us!

::yes:: Disney Dollars are GREAT for the kids. My DD's, then 7 and 9, received Disney Dollars for B'days , Christmas, and Easter from various family and Santa. They each had around $100 by the time we went on our trip. No fussing, they made their own choices quite wisely, and each came home with a LITTLE cash. We're starting over for our trip next May! They can't wait to start their savings!

My ds (8) will have his own money this trip for the first time. He agreed to ask for US $ for b-days etc. Plus he sometimes works with his dada and makes extra cash. So far he has $120. I just let him know that he will have to use his own money for the resort arcade and for any souvenirs, etc. Every dollar he gets he asks me to save and exchange for him.

We've had family give disney dollars for birthdays, Easter, Christmas etc. Our kids are 4, 5 and 6. They each have accumulated $135 (way more than they need). The 5 and 6 year old will be allowed to buy whatever souveniers they want but when it's gone it's gone. I'll help the 4 year old. This doesn't include snacks and I also buy the girls a new princess dress each year, so I'll have to make it up to my son somehow. I predict they'll all come home with some disney dollars for next year's trip. THis is the first time the girls will be responsible for using their own money so I'm curious to see how it goes.

I think that is great advice- we have been doing this also.
Although we got the kid's ice cream and snacks, they each had $30 to spend in the gift shops...
They made very good choices and never complained or whined.

I thought I would try giving DD an envelope with $10 one for each day of our stay, and try and encourage her to 'look' at the souvies and save money from day to day... not sure if it will work or not - dd is 7 btw!! (first timers)

I have done the same thing with DD4. She will have about $20 per day. She was 2 (almost 3) when we went before and she received Disney Dollars for xmas, birthdays, etc.. and had about $20 per day for our 2 week trip. I had an envelope for her each day. Some days she only spent $1, and we would carry that money over for the next day. By the end of the trip she had enough leftovers for a very nice princess dress. It worked surprisingly well. She got whatever she wanted, and did not ask me for anything.

This time she has already said she want the little princess polly pocket type dolls. She already has Ariel, Aurora & Cinderella. She said she needs Snow White & Tinkerbell. I hope they are not $17 bucks a piece. I bought her first three at the Disney store for $9.99 on sale.

I do have $20 per day for DD18months, but I'm sure we will come back with most of her money. I will only have to buy her something cheap so she does not destroy DD4's toys;)

I am the one everyone needs to worry about shopping wise. Yes, I am worried about DD11 on this trip, but I will use the same tactic on her that I sometimes use on myself. Whenever we see something at WDW we want to buy, we will keep it in mind until almost the last day. We will continue to keep a mental list of all the things we would like to buy. The things we want most, we will definetly remember. Other things may be replaced by different souveniers that we see later. When we finally buy the stuff we want, we get most of it from WOD in DTD, where I believe we can still get 10% with our AP. We buy a lot of stuff all at once, and ship it home. We usually arrive home before the souveniers do, so receiving the pkg from Mickey after we are home from our trip extends the magic a bit more! This doesn't work at the outlets, since item quantities are usually very limited. If we see something we must have, we buy it right away.
