Hey there
I’m currently in America, on exchange through my university for one semester. I had a quick 10 day travel period before I arrived at my host university so I thought I’d write up a little trip report, so here it is! I also have a blog about my time on exchange, so if anyone wants to know it, PM me and I’ll send through the URL.

:cool1:

Wednesday 7th August.

I was flying Melbourne to New York City through Qantas, who were the cheapest for my dates and enabled me to break my trip up with a few days in LA. This trip was originally going to be solo, but another girl who is from my university and going to the same exchange university joined with me.

The 9.15am departure meant I was awake around 4am to do any last minute packing. I sobbed saying goodbye to my beautiful cats, and even more so when I said my farewells to my family at the departures gate. Our flight was delayed due to ‘seating issues’ but we finally were on our way by around 10am.

It was a typical long haul flight, made bearable by the in-seat inflight entertainment. I watched a handful of movies and TV shows and attempted to fall asleep to the large list of music available. The food was decent, for lunch/dinner I had a beef/potato/vegetable combination and there was plenty of drinks, icecream, fruit, nuts and muesli bars on offer.

We finally arrived at LAX after the twelve or so hours and surprisingly we were ahead of schedule despite our long delay at Melbourne. Unfortunately the time we saved was lost in immigration. I’m not sure if we picked a bad line, but it took almost an hour to get to the front. Being on a J-1 visa, we had been warned we may be ‘taken in’ for questioning and to expect lengthy delays in the process but all I was asked was why I was there, and for how long and away I went! By the time we collected our bags they were the only ones left on the baggage carousel and they just collected our customs declaration cards and let us through without a second glance.

Groundhog Day.

I had a bunch of US coins left from previous holidays so I skipped off the pay phone to let Karmel Shuttles know we’d arrived. Although a bit more pricey than other shuttle companies, they were courteous, on time, had clean vans and did not circle the airport to pick up additional people. Before long we were on the dangerously scary LA highways and on our way to the HOJO Anaheim.

We checked in around 10am and our rooms were not ready yet. No worries, we took out what we needed and they held them for us. We went to Downtown Disney first and ate at Earl of Sandwich, my travel partner’s favourite meal place from a previous trip to WDW. I had the Cannonball which was a meatball sub and it was pretty good. We’d planned to eat here again but never got around to it. The remainder of our time at DTD was spent walking through shops and soaking in the Disney vibes. We still had time to kill so we sat in the lobby of the Grand Californian and pretended we could afford such a beautiful hotel while living as a poor uni student (and most importantly, used their free wifi….). We took the very long way back to the HOJO and went via Garden Walk which was even more of a ghost town than it was the last time I went over two years ago. Finally we were able to check into our room at the HOJO - a standard two double beds in building 6, away from the freeway and with a lovely garden view.

After a little nap we headed downstairs to Mimi’s Café for dinner. I ordered a ‘Bleu Cheese & Walnut Salad’ which had greens, cranberries, bacon, tomato and strawberries. It also came with a cinnamon muffin which was the size of my head. Needless to say I did not come close to finishing either of them but it was a light and enjoyable dinner.

:crazy2:

Back we went to rest our weary heads, having been awake for over 24 hours and to get ready for our first big day at Disneyland in the morning!

Enjoy your time in the US, Ms Potatohead!

Subbing in to enjoy this Disney First TR.

Thanks for the encouragement so far!

Thursay 8th August

We had decided to use our Magic Morning today, which began at 7am so we were up very early and ready to go. As soon as we were through the gates I was 3 years old, again. My travel partner was keen for Space Mountain so we went there first, got a FP then rode it. Then we did Buzz with a walk on and rode Space again. We utilised fasspasses really well during this trip, so most of the days we’d get to the park early, get a fast pass, ride it, get another fast pass, use first fast pass, use second fast pass etc. I needed to get my PhotoPass+ redeemed and in true luck to myself it arrived the day that I left. But they were able to give me another code and photo CD as I didn’t know it had arrived at home so it worked out fine. We ‘walked with purpose’ towards DCA and got there a little after 8am opening to find a LONG LONG LONG line for RSR FPs. Nonetheless we joined the line and 10minutes later we had return FPs for 1.55-2.55pm. Not too bad.

Next we rode the Tower of Terror and Monsters Inc before grabbing a smoothie for breakfast. We headed to the front of the park and lined up for Soarin’ which was just as breathtaking as previous times. After Soarin’, Toy Story Midway Mania was calling my name, so we headed towards Paradise Pier. We grabbed FPs for Screamin’ which we were able to use after a 45min wait for TSMM. I absolutely LOVE Toy Story and this is hands down one of my favourite attractions across Disneyland and DCA. We have the game for it on Wii so I had been practicing hard for this trip! I did get best in the vehicle but nowhere close to best this hour or today and it was only 10am!

After using our FP for Screamin’ we found ourselves catching up with Woody and rode the non-swinging carriage on Mickey’s Fun Wheel (of Doom)…I’ve learnt from experience. We convinced a lovely lady who shared our carriage to visit Australia! one thing we noticed about our time in Anaheim was the friendliness of everyone – they would hear our accents and start up a conversation about Australia, or Disney, or why we were in the US.

The Little Mermaid was next and it was nice to get out of the sun. We took a pit stop in Carsland before deciding to have lunch at Taste Pilot’s Grill – food porn below.

Our fastpasses for RSR let us enter the 120min line with a 10minute wait. This may be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think I’d wait any more than 45minutes for the ride. It was really cool and I love the Cars franchise but it was over so quick. The theming of Carsland is amazing though.

We rested our feet whilst watching It’s Tough To Be A Bug and went on Grizzly. After, it was time to head back to Disneyland where Dole Whip Floats were devoured.

Although Splash Mountain had a wait time of 75minutes we joined the queue and waited in the heat, which was where I became badly sunburnt! Slip Slop Slap is not enough for my poor pastey white skin. We also watched the Parade which was so fun and Disney-y.

Dinner was at the Plaza Inn. My travel buddy wanted to try the fried chicken dinner except we made the mistake of ordering one each…there was definitely enough to share one plate.

We rolled our bodies back down Main Street towards DCA to catch World of Colo(u)r. When I’m having a low day back home, I would watch WOC on Youtube and it would cheer me up. So I was a little bit emotional watching it tonight, but in a good way. The music, lights, sound, water and projections make it an unforgettable experience.

We took a night time ride on the Tower of Terror before calling it a night and heading back to the Hojo to get ready for another big Disney day tomorrow!

What a great first day!

I can't believe RSR still has such a long wait, even for fastpasses :scared1: Can't wait to try it though!

Loving the report-sounds like a brilliant first day - even better knowing its the start of an exchange in the US!

Fantastic day.

When you went on TSM, did Mr Potatohead talk to you, Miss.Potatohead? Did you tell him who you were???

Love the food porn. Keep it coming.

haha :lmao: yes I did try and tell him who I was, but he was more interested in telling off the bratty kids who were yelling at him to shut up!

Friday 9th August

This morning started off with Indiana Jones and a stroll around New Orleans Square. We jumped aboard and sailed through Pirates of the Caribbean before heading back to Space Mountain to ride and get some fastpasses. We then rode Casey Junior and Snow White’s Scary Adventure. I was a little upset we didn’t see more of Fantasyland, but it was always so busy in there and I had to compromise with my travel buddy.

We then rode Splash Mountain twice, once without a FP and then with the FP and got weirded out on Winnie the Pooh. I had one of my favourites from my previous trip for lunch – the BBQ chicken baked potato!

We also rode Haunted Mansion, which I love but had to settle for one ride on it only. We were temporally halted on it too so I whipped out my camera and took some pretty average shots.

We rode space with out expired FP (it had broken down earlier so it was fun) then watched Captain EO, where I had the first of many nanna naps for the day. I think the jet lag was catching up to me by this stage, plus the film was a little zany for my liking. I continued my nap in Innoventions, before we trekked across the park to steer the canoes. The Davy Crockett Canoes was hard work but quite fun and it gave my upper arms a nice workout!

Judging by my photos we also rode the Jungle Cruise and Indiana Jones again. The parade was on again so my friend got another Dole Whip and I had a Cherry Lemonade from the Jolly Holiday Bakery and we sat and listened to the music.

After, we headed down Main Street to the Great Moments with Mr Lincoln, where I had another sleep. I was actually disappointed I napped because American history interests me a lot but I’d seen it before so no loss. We then headed up to Toon Town and had a look around, then rode Star Tours using fastpasses we’d picked up earlier. I hadn’t done Star Tours before as it was being remodelled my previous trip and it was ace. I’m not a big StarWars fan but even so I enjoyed it.

We had chicken nuggets and chips for dinner which were really average even for Disney food and stayed in our spots to watch Fantasmic! The view was poor but we couldn’t be bothered waiting for hours to get a good glimpse (…again, compromises…).

We slowly made our way back along Main Street as the fireworks were going off, with me getting a bit emotional again. The music just gets to me. Tomorrow would be a non-Disney day so we said our goodbyes until Sunday and enjoyed the walk back to the hotel.

Sounds like another great day. Can I ask, what was it that weirded you out on Winnie the Pooh?

And I love your shot of the singing busts from HM :thumbsup2

Great pics! And I agree with Zanzibar.....great picture of the singing busts!

Lol - I know EXACTLY what you mean! our family refer to that ride as "Pooh's Bad Acid Trip"- it is quite different to the WDW version. Liberal use of fluoro paint, swirly trippy shapes and Pooh does a lot of spinning around.... not to mention dreaming of Heffalumps and Woozles!
we love turning around at the right spot to see the heads of the three dudes from the Country Bear Jamboree though, still hanging on the wall....
enjoying your TR!

Love the pics too...if you think WTP is trippy in DL you should see the Tokyo version!
