I thought the difference between the two was fantasy pins implied charcters or other Disney icons. An example -- Stitch and only his hands and ears are visible behind a sign.

Now what makes this pin a Fantasy pin and not counterfeit?

Pin 17467: Fantasy Pin--Dizneypins.com (November 2002 Disney Cruise Event) PLANK Pin

I suppose it is because the pin alone does not show Mickey -- he is attached later with a true Disney (c) add-on.

I would think the add-ons were not attached by Disney.

the pin in question is really a fantasy pin BASE. There's something similar that Dizkidz did, had a pin BASE that any REGULAR pin could be attach too (not an add-on) so you didn't have to worry about Disney not wanting to put an add-on on an unofficial base.

The pin you are referring to is actually TWO pins. The fantasy pin (the large square which is the back part of the pin) was made to accomodate an actual Disney pin (not a Build a pin add on). The pin base was given to all guests who received one WITH the actual Captain Mickey disney pin.

Technically, acording to Disney, any pin that is not made by Disney and even has a hint of a Disney character or icon is considered counterfeit or boot leg.

Acording to Pinpics and a few others only those that are a direct copy of a (c) Disney pin of show a full character or their head from the front are considered counterfeit. All others, including sillowets, side views, and characters in different outfits or poses than what they have been seen in at Disney, are fantasy.

The reason this pin and pin # 11792 are not counterfeit is that both the Disney characters are removable and any pin that is about the same size can be put on. The Disney character pins are held on by a rubber pinbacks. Pin #11792 was produced before the Disney Build-A-Pin program was thought of.

Didn't Dizpins do something like this for the 2001 pin event? I have a vague memory of seeing one.
