Disney Fantasy - a great steak?

Hey all,

We are going to be going on the Fantasy in the fall for our 10th anniversary. On other lines we've sailed, they have had specialty steak house restaurants. I know on DCL there are only 2 choices for specialty restaurants and they are Remy or Palo.

I'm more adventurous when it comes to food, but my DH is not. He LOVES a great steak and doesn't mind paying for it while on a cruise (other lines even offer a paid upgraded steak option in the MDR).

Can you get an amazing steak at either of the DCL specialty restaurants?

Also we will be doing our dinner on the last night of the cruise which is our actual anniversary....are we best to save our money and just do MDR and celebrate at one of the Disney Resort properties when we return to port?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I don't think you are going to find a "great" steak on DCL. The cuts in the MDR can be good. The ones in the specialty restaurants are really good but not, in my opinion, great. Different people have different tastes though so Palo or Remy might be a good place to try.

As a fellow carnivore, I absolutely have the filet mignon/beef tenderloin at Palo on every cruise with both the red wine sauce and the gorgonzola sauce. Some steaks are better than others, but it is always better than the best steak I have ever had at a Disney Resort restaurant.

We only came across one steak on our 4 night cruise on the Dream last year, it was a filet and I think it was my first dinner in the AP? Can you order that steak at every restaurant? I have heard if you like something from another restaurant they will do that. There was a steak on the alternatives menu as well but it was not very good....

Where would I find current menus for Remy and Palo? Thank you in advance!

Interesting....that sounds nice. We had an AMAZING steak last year at Narcoossee's with a red-wine oxtail reduction that was so so good!

Response -

I have found that different waiters handle special requests differently. While some are great about bringing extra desserts or meals or even dishes from one of the other restaurants you may love, others aren't so accommodating. While of course you can push the issue and tell them you know it can be done, not sure I would want to have that sort of confrontation.

Yes. The best steak I have had. Mind you, I have not tried actual Kobe beef yet.

Our experience is that the steak served in the MDR is just not a good steak. However, the Beef Tenderloin at Palo is very good.

The Filet in Palo is serviceable, but I wouldn't rate it as great. There's a reason why it comes with Gorgonzola sauce;) Haven't had a truly great steak on Disney since Cabana's/Topsider's eliminated the Porterhouse from their menu :(

On the other question, we always do Palo on the last night of the cruise :)

Thanks for all the advice. I think it sounds like it's better to wait for a resort restaurant to celebrate. I don't think there is anything else on the Palo menu my hubby will enjoy except the filet and it wouldn't be with the gorgonzola sauce...$60 for a filet alone just isn't worth it. Thanks again!

You can, of course, order the Palo tenderloin filet with nothing and it's seared and seasoned beautifully...a slight dip in the sauces on the side just adds to the scrumptiousness. It's not floating in it. To me, the main dining room steaks pale in comparison, but they are not advertised as the same caliber as those served at Palo, so expectations are kept in alignment with that. I don't know where y'all are eating steaks, but I guess ranking one over another has much to do with personal preference and taste, just like arguments over who makes the best-tasting hamburger. For the $60 upcharge at Palo TWO people are getting not just a filet alone but the whole dining experience- antipasto, side dishes (like the wild mushroom risotto mmmm) desserts to die for, etc. The best steak i can ever remember eating was on our third visit to Palo. Second best was at Ruth's Chris. People's palates just vary too much, so I always try things myself even if others say they don't like them.

We are from Alberta, famous for our beef....that's neither here nor there though. You're right everyone's taste is different.

I thought it was $60 PER PERSON for Palo - my comment was in reference to the fact that there isn't anything else on the menu my hubby would likely try. I looked it over and I would doubt he'd branch out - so in fact, the $60 would be for JUST the steak....maybe dessert

We also don't like Ruth's Chris - not a fan of having my steak drowning in butter. Again, just my preference.

I got the great idea on another post to try out the ribeye at Cabana's because it's supposed to be very good (at dinner during the sit-down menu part).

I have had that ribeye twice - liked it enough once to go back on another trip. I thought it was a decent steak, and the meal overall was a nice change of pace from the main rooms.

The Miyazaki beef at Remy was incredible. 4 oz was an additional $110.00 charge (on top of the regular $85.00 charge)! They served it right next to their regular filet and there was no comparison.

Each night on the dinner menu in the MDRs there is an option for a steak under the "lighter fare" selections (along with chicken and at least one other item). We get steak multiple nights and have always enjoyed it (however, I only eat meat, including steaks, that are well done, so my enjoy is probably not a lot of other people's). Advantage of the lighter fare options is the foods are simple and without most of the sauces, gravies and flavours found on the main part of menu [this is good if you don't normally like those other things, have food sensitivites, etc].

Only remy has a great steak on the fantasy. But very small.

Palo has a very good steak.

Mdr. Good to poor

I order my steaks w/ NO sauce. I get really weird looks (and an argument once) from the wait staff. I'm not a fan of all the sauces, especially on steak.
I've had the steaks in the MD and in Palo. They are OK.

Having done DCL 13 times and dined at Palo 16 times I have found that the filet has gone down hill over the years. Other cruise lines that we have been on have a true steak house that offers a selection of cuts beef cooked more to our liking.

@Vegasnine If you are thinking of going the WDW route, I can tell you the Canadian steak house at Epcot has a great (imho). Happy 10th.

P.S. We always have dinner at Palo on the ship(s) and I really like the steak.
