Please note - there are rumors around the studio that this film my be delayed for some major reworking. The "relationship" between Disney Feature Animation and the crowd from Pixar is still being worked on. Rumors say that Pixar is reviewing each and every DFA film in production and they are not happy with the quality of what they are seeing. The director of American Dog has been kicked off that project and further changes are expected to come.

Tinker Belle is the center of a huge marketing effort to build a toy line on the size of the Disney Princesses. The dolls, dresses, and various other "buy it or I'll scream" trinkets are set to debut this summer. So on one side you have film makers pushing for a good movie, one that support sequels and all the merchandise, then you have all the marketering types who only see the movie as a commerical for toys.

No one who will win at this point. But I wouldn't place my money on quality winning out.

I've been waiting forever for a Tink movie, and it's driving me nuts. I really hope they work on it, and make a theater quality movie, but if it's not good enough it's better they just release it on video then ruin it with lackluster ticket sells. The problem I see is that whatever movie they do for Tink... that is it forever, so if they do a cruddy job we'll be stuck with a cruddy version of my favorite pixie.

The Disney fairies are based on a series of books by Gail Carson Levine, a very popular children's author. she wrote Ella Enchanted and a few other books popular with the 2nd-5th grade age girl. Now she is collaborating for the fairy series. So, the movie may be based on these, not just a money maker. the books are usually rated 4-5 stars by kids, so hopefully the movie will be good. Many popular kids books are being made into movies.

Rest assured that they wouldn't be doing it if they weren't looking for a "money-maker". Disney has stated to investors that they are looking to create a franchise similar to the princess franchise, primarily targeting a younger age group.

Who knows how the movie(s) will turn out (if its direct to video, we can probably guess), but the reason for launching it was to create a money-making franchise.

If I recall correctly, Ms. Levine was hired by Disney to create the books; books that are based on the marketing campaign. This may be a case of the chicken coming before the egg.

Regardless of how the books came to be, they are well-written and enjoyable for children. So if the movies make kids interested in reading the series, wahoo. Anything to gets kids to read, and a decent movie will do just that.

DD, age 8, is working her way through the Pixie Hollow Books, so I am familiar with the different fairies and their talents.

On Friday, we went to Toys R' Us and she bought a miniature set of Tink with Queen Clarion. It came with a DVD. It is bascially a commericial.

We popped it in. Gradually we became aware of the fact that there are two sets of fairies, book and the future DVD. I went to the Disney Fairies website to make sure it wasn't a hallucination. It wasn't. The fairies in the books are different from those in the DVD.

I did some movie site-based research and they want Fairies to appeal to girls older than the princesses; so, according to what I read, they need to tweak it to appeal to 8-11, instead of 4-7.

I agree that the books are more for the 8-11 year-old girl. My daughter is 9 and has read all the books many times. She is at the age where she is starting to be too old for toys, but for Christmas I bought her a few of the Fairy toys. She plays with them a little bit but I doubt I will be getting any more fairy toys for her. We will continue to buy the books as they come out. One just came out in January and another is due in April.

I do think they may have missed the boat on the books driving purchase of the toys since the toys are geared for younger kids. Kids are growing up faster than ever nowadays and are not interested in toys by the time they are 8-11. We're starting on fashion, jewelry and makeup for heaven's sake!!!

My DD6 loves the Fairy books. I used to be an editor for a children's educational publisher, and unlike the previous posters, I think Disney missed the boat on the books. ALthough they are written for 8-11-year-olds (chapter length, sentence structure). The stories are rather basic and appeal to the 6-8 age. They lack some of the sophistication necessary for the older age (compare to Anne of Green Gables, the Little House series, etc.) My daughter can't read the books but likes me to read them to her. I personally find them rather bland like someone is writing the text for a fairy-half-hour cartoon. In that respect, the toys do match the age-level-content of the books. Hard to know who their target audience really is -- I guess it's anyone who still believes no matter what age.

Just my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I like any product that'll keep the kids with noses in their books. Can't see these as long-lasting classics though.

My DD just turned 5 and I'm reading the books to her. She loves them.

And honestly, no matter how horrible I may think the movie is, DD will love it. Some of her favorites are the ones sent straight to DVD. So, if she's happy, I'm happy.
