Disney Dream Sketcher

I bought two of the Dream Sketchers from Target on clearance for $14.98. I bought some of the cartridges to give to my son. The other sketcher is going to be a birthday gift. Will they be able to play with it right out of the box even though I am not giving them any additional cartridges? I don't want to give someone a toy that will require them to spend more money before they can play with it.
