Planning DCL first trip for wife, son, and 5 year old son. There are 7 sea days out of 13 total. Heard great things about Disney cruises for on board entertainment so hoping he won't get bored. Planning deluxe family verandah but asking please for your suggestions as to different room types and decks for comfort on long cruise. Concierge not available at this time for 2023 sailing. Thank you.

When sailing the Dream class ships, we like the extended aft verandahs as they have space for loungers.

I read that they tend to get covered in black ash from the diesel funnel, though. How bad is it? And how much of the verandah is visible to people on the deck above?

We stayed in an extended verandah, midship. No black ash at all. Half the verandah is “visible” to the staterooms above but not really a big deal unless maybe you like to sunbath naked.

And even then, you should be aware that there ARE surveillance cameras all over the ship including the balconies for security. Not necessarily one on each balcony, but so that the balconies can be monitored for safety.

Our family loves long cruises with lots of sea days. My personal preference is to avoid a stateroom directly opposite the laundry rooms. People tend to congregate in the hallways near the laundry rooms on these long cruises. I agree with the recommendations above concerning the extended veranda. We stayed in one midship/forward. It is nice to have a quiet place to lay out on a lounge chair without having to worry about finding one on the pool deck.

We have not had an issue with ash, whether it was the way the wind blew or a fast stateroom host.

If you are standing at the rail, people above will be able to see you. But, because of the way the decks extend out most of the veranda is not all that visible. It is not like the extended verandas on some other cruise lines where everyone above you can see most of your verandah. There are some 4Es on deck 5 where you are more visible from above, so we prefer the 5E at the aft.

I'm a fan of mid-ship family verandahs around deck 7 or so. Ship motion is fairly minimal, and you just have to go up or down a few decks to get to where you want to go, and you don't have any high noise area above or below you. (We try to always take the stairs instead of the elevators so we get at least some exercise to counter eating so much food.)

Thanks to all of you for the advice! Right now we have a mid ship family verandah on deck 8. Love the idea of extended verandah but wife always concerned regarding ship exhaust, imagined or not. Not sure where extended verandahs are outside of aft areas.

There are a few extended verandahs on the sides, but those are the very exposed ones, and I've never sailed in one but have read room reports of lack of privacy and people dropping junk onto the verandah from higher decks. They do offer a good view, though. One other issue about the extended verandahs on the sides is that the room is smaller inside, only the size of a non-family oceanview verandah, and not with the round tub/rainshower, just the rectangle tub and regular shower.

Aft also can vibrate a lot when the ship is really moving, and with a transatlantic, you're going to be really moving a lot. I think a midship family verandah is the way to go.

Thanks for your input. We decided to go with deck 8 mid shape family verandah. Looking forward to this!
