Disney Dream - Bahamas stop - skip it?

We usually buy souvenirs from the people selling stuff from the little huts on the beach. I assume the beach by the port (Junkanoo) has them.

All that being said, you don't really venture off the beaten path in Nassau...kinda like how you you don't go to bad parts of NYC just to check them out. Nassau has a crime problem like NY, Baltimore, and Chicago have a problem. The crime is generally in impoverished areas of the city that you/tourists don't venture into voluntarily.

Hi,

First time cruise coming up in October. Very excited!

I've been reading here and other sites, and while I'm sure there are positive experiences, I'm reading a lot of negative related to the Bahamas day. It seems that some places should be completely avoided, beaches close to the ship are hit or miss depending on the day/cleanliness, and the excursions that sound "good" are quite expensive.

I'm leaning to just staying on board, but at the same time, that makes me feel like we're missing something. Would it be strange to do our first cruise and the only time we get off the ship is at CC? Is it as bad as it sounds? Should I just suck it up and pick an excursion that sounds fun and go for it?

I know everyone has to form their own opinions, but some of the sites I'm reviewing almost make the Bahamas stop sound a bit "scary"?

Short answer, first time there, Get Off The Ship!!

It's not scary. (Some areas can look a little run down, and be a little smelly, like a lot of tourist stops-even in the US)
Crime that is reported that I've read about general involves night life.
Check out straw market or a beach, you don't have to spend a ton of money. We felt totally safe with our 3&5 year olds taking a cab to a free local beach AND walking through the straw market without strollers or child leashes :) have fun! Check it out once, make your own decision, you might love it!

Possibly.

But you can be mugged anywhere. I was mugged in my ever-more-gentrified neighborhood one bright summer morning.

So true -- I was mugged in the parking lot of my apartment complex! It doesn't keep me home -- I gotta go and see things and if I start fearing every instance that could happen, I'll miss out on a lot!

If you have never been then you should experience

That's the only true Way of having a valid opinion.

I already had my experience and I'm glad I did but I have no desire to go back because I want to experience the ship because this is the only ship of the fleet that I have not done

If we did another itinerary that included Nassau, I think at that point we would stay onboard and enjoy the ship. I think we've done all that we want to there, but would love more time on the ship now.

This.

And in my 3 years working on DCL, to my knowledge on all the sailings I was on, all guests made it back on board alive and without serious injury - however I can't say that happened on all Castaway stops....maybe we should avoid CC too?

I actually quite like Nassau, but as a CM all I did was get food and free Internet, like the majority of the ports I went to haha!
