Disney Dream April 19, 2012 - 3 Nights

Pershing, thanks for the toddler link. It was quite helpful, I had to start a tip list so I would remember all this stuff.

I'm still learning about Fish Extenders (took me forever to figure out what FE stood for and what they do). What kind of gifts do you leave for other guests?

I'm sure there are more ideas for toddlers out there. I just did one quick search and put in the word 'toddlers' on the search this forum option.

My advice is to take lots of pictures 'cause my youngest doesn't even remember our first trip to WDW and he was 5!!! But when he looks at the pictures of him, he can remember glimmers.

As far as Fish Extenders go, most people leave something that indicates where they are from or what they do or like. I usually do something Cape Cod-ish. One trip a couple from Canada gave out Maple Syrup in little bottles. Last trip a couple had their own machinist shop and made us all key rings in the shape of Mickey heads.

Others gave out useful stuff like Disney pens and sticky's, gum for the plane ride home. Homemade first aid kits with tylenol, seasickness medicine and band aids. (That was very useful as it turned out!) Someone gave out little bottles of cherry vodka! :drinking1

Or decorative things for your cruise door which is magnetic. So refrigerator magnet stuff.

No matter how small or large, it really is just the idea of finding something in your FE when you go back to the cabin. That's the fun of it.

Actually, it was kind of overwhelming last time. We had over 40 cabins signed up or something like that. Lots of running around.

I focus on the vacation first and then FE second.

Is anyone doing Legoland this trip? My kids are too old for it now. If they opened it when they were younger they would have been all over it.

Wow, a mere 2 pages for this cruise?? We sailed on the Dream August 16-21, and folks on that cruise were so chatty they filled up 3 threads!!

At any rate, my family and I will be on the April 19th sailing. We are from Mass and yes, it is our school vacation week. We are DVC members and will be at Bay Lake Tower from the 14th-19th, going home after the cruise. Our kids are ages 8 (girl) and 6 (boy). This is our second DCL cruise and we can't wait to be back on the Dream. See you all there!

:welcome: mousefan 1972!

Yes, the 3 day cruise threads tend to have less posters.

I'm envious of your Bay Lake Tower stay!!! Someday, I'll be a DVC owner :wizard: We've only rented AKV the last couple of years due to the low points.

How did you like your first cruise in August? Was it wicked hot then?

Hi and thanks for the welcome! :goodvibes We loved our August cruise. Believe it or not, it was much less hot on the cruise than WDW had been before we sailed. :scared: The Dream is just beautiful, and we really enjoyed all the ship had to offer. We are looking forward to going back!

AKV is very nice. We spent 5 nights there this past June. Where on the Cape are you?

mousefan We are wayyyyyy down the Cape in Eastham, and I work in Orleans. It's still about 30-45 minutes from the end at Provincetown (where my doctor's office is!) but it's far enough that we think of Hyannis as 'commuting'. lol

The DVC owner we rented our points from this year lives in Providence but works for the Cape Cod Stop & Shop stores. Big coincidence, considering I just picked an owner from the rent board randomly. Well, maybe not so randomly. He lets you put down a small deposit and pay the rest 60 days out from your vacation. Me and my tax refund love that! Let's me focus on airfare and car rentals, airport parking, and tickets. I'd love to be able to buy WDW tickets before the year ends. Disney always goes up in price around the end of December, and I kick myself for not buying the tickets sooner.

Oh, and friendly reminder for those of us doing WDW before or after cruise. Don't forget to make your Disney Dining reservations. You can do that online at disneyworld.disney.go.com/reservations/dining. April is already open!

We don't do much sit down eating, but I usually make one or two reservations just in case we change our minds. And yes, I cancel them so other people can book.

We eat breakfast in the room, counter service for lunch, usually the boys have a light dinner like snack in the room later in the day (Love those studio microwaves and toasters!), then we augment the snack with dinner at some off-Disney place the kids love ie: Golden Corral, Cici's, Steak and Shake etc.

We don't have many restaurant chains on Cape Cod, so their list of 'must-eat-at' places is long! I must say I love Popeyes! I think they are some in Massachusetts, but no where near me. However, I think my cardiologist would rule that stop out this year.:sad1:

Things I'm looking forward to:

1-Sunbathing at Serenity Bay. (5 cruises, but last time was the first time I got to go to the adult beach.)
2-Snorkeling at Castaway Cay. My autistic son and I had a blast last time! Although he kept me out there way too long and I burnt my back. This time I'm wearing a Rash Guard shirt! (It's free if you bring your own snorkel stuff.)
3-Sitting in Pink sipping pink champagne before bedtime.
4-Going to the 'movies' with my sons. Saw 3 movies last time, one with each son. (Hint for newbies: Grab food and drink from top deck BEFORE the movie as they charge you for that stuff outside the movie theater.)

Mousefan- which section of MA are you from? North South West or East?

Pershing, thanks for the tip on making dining reservations at WDW. Didn't know I needed to do that, and with a fairly large family crowd, we should probably look into that. Any suggestions? We're doing WDW Tuesday and Wednesday before the cruise.

Love the tip about getting food and drinks before the movie. I imagine they'll have movies suitable for a 3-year-old, I mean this is a Disney cruise after all. ;)

Question regarding tipping: DH and I have been on a cruise before and he seems to remember putting tips on his credit card instead of cash in an envelope. Does this hold true to DCL? I've read threads about tipping, and how much to tip, but can't seem to find the answer to tips on a credit card. Personally, I'd rather tip with cash but DH likes to use the credit card for just about everything.

You need to make reservations for sit down dinners only. Magic Kingdom has very few great options. Crystal Palace is a buffet Winnie the Pooh character place, but older people will find it noisy. Epcot has our favorite restaurant Le Cellier at the Canada Pavillion. We usually skip sit down meals at Disney Studios or Animal Kingdom Park.

We splurge for the resort restaurants. Some of our favorites: Jiko at Animal Kingdom Lodge just for adults really. Yachtsman Steakhouse at the Yacht Club is the place to get steak onsite. My kids love Whispering Canyon Cafe at Wilderness Lodge but I don't think the foods that great. I like Boatwright's Dining Hall at Port Orleans Riverside.

You can find all the menus and diser's reviews on the dining tab of WDWinfo.com. It's all very expensive, however we had free dining one year and tried a bunch of restaurants. Now we eat sit down off WDW as it's cheaper. I have teenage boys with bottomless stomachs. I need buffet places like Golden Corral!

Citricoes and Narcossee are the 2 favorite gourmet restaurants at the Grand Floridian. I haven't been to either, but plan to someday.

They are all Disney Company based movies. Sometimes, you get a scary movie in there with the mix. It's all recent movies usually.

The television in your stateroom will have alot of other first run movies and movies for small kids. I learned that one trip with one of my DS's was sick.

Since we cruised in April, there was a thread on the main cruise board, that I cannot find now, that said cruise tips for the staff were automatically being charged to your account. If you wanted to change any of them at Guest Services, you could.

Although only the guideline is still listed on disneycruise.com http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/faqs/onboard-services/gratuities/

I'm hoping they do add it automatically. I think it's a time saver, although other diser's thought it was rude on DCL's part. It started on the Mediterranean Cruises because of different cultures and tipping. The staff weren't getting tipped at all by some people and DCL took matters into their own hands.

Before that, you could tip the staff either way. By going to Guest Services and putting them on your account or using the envelopes they provide in the stateroom for cash.

When you order a drink on board-like an alcoholic drink. Look at the receipt. Gratuity is already included.
Many people miss that and add another tip. ('cause they put another spot for an additional tip, go figure!) :drinking1

Outside of staff tipping, none of the cruise members will take cash for drinks, merchandise etc. Everything is charged with your room key (card) onboard. Be careful with those room cards! (you can block the kids from having credit attached to their room card when you pre-register online).

You can also payoff your room account with cash at Guest Services. However, the lines for Guest Services at the end of the cruise are usually long. -like wicked long!

Today, I'm day dreaming about sitting on my stateroom veranda and watching the sunset with some kind of room service in my hand.

5 cruises and I never ordered room service!:scared1:

I thought of another cruise tip! Be sure to bring deposit money or credit to re-book onboard for another Disney Cruise. If you EVER think you are going to take another Disney Cruise, it's worth it! Book any dummy date, far out if you have no plans. You can always move your reservation to new dates later (before the cancellation window closes) and retain your Onboard Booking Discounts of 10% off plus an Onboard Credit amount based on the type of cruise you end up with. You rebook on the level just above Guest Services....and don't wait until the last day. Again, wicked long line!
Once the cruise ends, you cannot get this discount.

Thanks for explaining the advantage to rebooking another Disney Cruise. I have a feeling I'll be desperate to go on another Disney cruise after this one but doubt DH will want to go again so soon. As long as we can reschedule a cruise within the time frame, I may convince him to book another one. I can't imagine only going on one Disney cruise (shoot my parents have already been twice, and that was without kids!)

The DH's tend to have a much better time on the cruise than they anticipate. You may not have much of a battle!

The last cruise we went on last April, I booked onboard a Disney Cruise two and half years ago and moved it four times as dates opened up. I also booked just me in the cabin as I seriously only had $100 to spare. Then, I added the kids later when I could afford it.

At that time, cruise deposits were at half price. They may still be offering that promotion in this economy. I'm gonna check that out.

Seriously you moved around a cruise date that much. That's even better news, I won't have to worry about taking a cruise the following year.

Yes, no worries about that. :boat:

I'm worried about the fact it's supposed to snow in Massachusetts in the next day or so! :scared1: Granted we aren't supposed to get anything on the Cape, but snow in October????

...and the temperature is dropping like a stone. My heat clicked on! It's too early! Trick or treating on Monday is gonna be a drag!

I am not a fan of cold weather, winter is my least favorite season. I hate having to layer up. Yesterday was a beautiful 78 degrees, today it's 54 degrees. Not liking that at all. I think I'll stay here in NC forever.

:goodvibes I am not a fan of cold weather either. It's so cold today and a storm is on it's way. A Nor'easter during high tides is not good for Cape Cod. Ugh.

I was off Cape Cod yesterday around Walpole, MA and there was some snow on the ground. It was depressing to see it, that's for sure.

Today I'm putting away the rest of the summer-like clothes (my kids wear shorts as long as possible) and getting out the warmer clothes. I gotta say the shorts are looking a little worn around the edges and the t-shirts are getting those pinholes.

I hadn't planned on buying new clothes for the trip, but this is the time of year to visit Dr. Jay's, JC Penny's 'sale or outlet' part of their websites and get sig. marked down clothes.

I don't need any new bathing suits myself, but I love to look at them!

Well, it's almost been a month since my last post. Thought I'd check in and update a little.

Rental cars are finally starting to come down in price on Hotwire at least. April's starting to drop, so I can start bidding on Priceline after Christmas when I get my tax refund!

I use Hotwire as an indicator of what to bid up to on Priceline as Priceline usually is cheaper. Problem is with the 5 person, there's no renting a little economy car this year. We need the seat space in the back and the trunk space. Although, it is a boy.....but I'm bringing food and buying food and keeping a cooler in the trunk.

Last trip, we had a Chevy Aveo. It was sooo small, it was cute. However, unbelievably the key holder did not have any electronic door unlocker or any buttons at all! So, I had to be very careful to annotate where I parked at WDW and careful to write down the car type and license plate number.

One WDW trip, we arrived at 2 am and got a rental car. Next day, after Magic Kingdom, I was tired and hot and realized I didn't know where my car was or what it looked like. Without the electronic door unlocker, I don't think we'd've found it! :scared1: Lesson learned!

I'm starting to block out the WDW days before the trip:

Apr. 13 Friday Magic Kingdom 9 to 11pm

(Grocery Shop next morning. Note to self: check opening times for Publix and Winn Dixie. Maybe move grocery shop back to 'on the way to WDW from the airport'. Make perishable list, pack the rest.)

Apr. 14 Typhoon Lagoon/Disney Quest for younger 3 boys and movie for my oldest DS and I (Bring clothes to shower and change as Downtown Disney is across the street from Typhoon)

Apr. 15 EPCOT 9 to 9

Apr. 16 Hollywood Studios 9 to 9

Apr. 17 Blizzard Beach/Disney Quest again (can't let those 'Water Park Fun and More' tickets go to waste and hopefully the boys get their gaming fixes so they don't ask for arcade money on the cruise!)

Apr. 18 Animal Kingdom 9 to 6 and then head to Port Canaveral. Check in at Country Inn and Suites (Don't forget Carlson Club card!)

After the cruise is still a mystery to me. I'm not sure whether to get 4 day Water Park and more tickets or 5 day and go back after the cruise. We are there until Tuesday morning and I'm hoping to have my oldest visit Full Sail University on the monday before we leave.

The cost of parking went up at Port Canaveral, and it's rumored they are not letting you hand in your luggage and park until 11. My oldest still wants to get there early, but I'm thinking about taking it easy and showing up at our leisure.

Well....that's my update. Back to the Christmas Grind. Cleaning the living room in order to set up Christmas soon.

I'm so looking forward to the cruise! I really need the break! :flower2:

Hi All - I am too starting to finish the planning of the trip.

We will arrive on the Monday the 16th - no disney for us prior to the cruise though. (can't stand the crowds!) But, I will deal with SeaWorld for a day and then play at the resort. Still trying to change my flights around. Leaving from PVD to MCO with a 5:50pm flight and return on the 22nd has a stop in Baltimore. The one down was paid for with credits, the return over $800 for 2 people (thank goodness my DH flies free with me) Been watching Jet Blue into BOS - but nothing grand enough for me to jump off what I have.

Got a car (SUV) that I am happy with so far. Pick up MCO on 16th. Drop off at port on the 19th. SUV with Budget. All in price $194. Need to research if it is worth it for me extend and park at port and return to MCO or just take a Disney bus back to MCO.

Last year....dd loved the FE and is already chatting about it.

Ohh yeah....for roll call. Me, DH and DD 6.

Thanks mdurette! :yay:

My bet with 3 people that the bus is the cheapest. My oldest likes to park at the port. He says the car rental 'shuttle bus dance' wrecks the relaxation of the cruise. So I humor him and find other ways to save the money I'm out. (Like finding the cheapest rental car I can!)

I dunno, this thread is very small compared to other cruise threads. But I'm game! :wizard:

Good luck finding a better return flight! Getting a DING! would be a great thing. It's such a busy time for New England.

Hello mdurette!

I think we would be interested in doing a few FEs. Sounds like fun!

I haven't had time to visit the boards in awhile. Work keeps me busy and now with the holiday season and my son's birthday, December is a crazy month! Still counting down the days to Disney. DH and DS have their passports now so we are set! (I know we don't absolutely need passports but I feel safer with them).

We are likely heading down to Miami in January for the Orange Bowl. DH is a huge Clemson fan. Can't wait for our Florida trips!

Hi EVERYONE!!! I can’t wait till the cruise my DF and I will be getting married on the Dream in the Outlook Lounge!!:cool1: (ahhH!! soooo excited!!) This is our first cruise ever!:thumbsup2 I went to WDW for the first time like 5 years ago and it was for a short weekend with my mom and little brother. I didn’t really get a FULL Disney experience.:sad1: I’m so overwhelmed with the things that I need to do to be ready for this trip. The wedding planning is by far the easiest part of this whole trip
I was hoping y’all could help me with some of the questions I have.:confused3 I feel like it’s going to be a SUPER long post, but I the anxiety that I am feeling is due to me being a very organized person and with this trip I don’t feel organized. :confused3 I dont really know whats going on :confused3

Ok into the questions…. (THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY ADVICE YOU GIVE)

I have people flying into Orlando from Tennessee and Michigan on the 18th to meet us and get together before the cruise. Would it be better/easier for travel/less stress for us to…
A. just get a hotel around the Orlando Airport, rent a car just for that day to do the things that we need to do around Orlando (i.e. Marriage License) return the car that day and just have everyone make reservations at the same hotel around the Orlando Airport then take a shuttle to the port the next morning. Then when the ship docks the 22nd take a shuttle back to the Orlando airport and rent another car Or….
B. Get a hotel for everyone around the Port and rent a car (the 18th) just keep it from the 18th till the 25th (when we actually leave to go back home) park at the port and then go back to the WDW area.
We haven’t decided what we are doing from the 22-25 yet. (any advice on that one too) we are just going to use the whole weekend as our Weddingmoon Weekend and three day after just us. I think if I could figure the port travel part out I would be a little less stressed.

I’m beyond excited for this trip there will be 18-20 people total for our “dream wedding weekend” pirate:

YAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!

:welcome: flawlessdreams!

Congrats on your pending nuptials!

WOW! Getting married onboard! That should be fun.

Regarding your questions, your wedding party wouldn't be allowed in the DisneyCruise Terminal but there are areas further down the port where a wedding party could wave goodbye to you as you sail away.

However, Orlando has alot more sights to see or have a meeting at and Orlando International Airport has a ton of hotels around it. It is a typical airport area though.

Port Canaveral just has Kennedy Space Center besides the cruise ports. Although you can make a day out of that. I'm not sure what you are looking for.

Port Canaveral only has a few hotels but Cocoa Beach has a ton and it is a beach area. Ron Jon Resort has a whole water park thing.

Regarding the rental car- rates are way high right now. Usually it's cheaper to pay for parking and rent a round trip car from Orlando Airport. However, the week before our cruise is Easter Week and the rentals are running high from that. The further you get away from Easter Week, the lower the prices go. So renting one way may be cheaper because of it.

I usually do a comparison sheet (obsessive much...um yes) with round trip prices plus parking on one side and one way rentals on the other. Remember that some of the Port Canaveral hotels offer free cruise parking and shuttles to the boat. (Radisson and Country Inn and Suites for two)

Hope that helps. :flower2:
