Disney Dissertation

Hey everyone!! Trying to come up with a working title for my dissertation proposal (of course I want to base my stupidly long ssignment on Disney). Im a media studies student and need to focus on Disney in terms of the media, Im thinking about the global impact perhaps, just haven't come up with anything specific as yet!! anyone got any ideas? the help would be much appreciated, thanks very much, Kat

Just a couple; they may seem cheesy.... but, if you're doing a paper on Disney, I am sure many of us who surf the boards would love to have a peek when it's through (just a thought!)

Just wanted to recommend a couple of books, Understanding Disney by Wasko and The Mouse that Roared by Giroux.

Is this diss for your doctorate? Would love to hear more about your media studies program, research interests, etc.

With a global impact twist, you could look at the the way Disney is viewed in different countries in terms of culture and the media...maybe...like the fact Donald Duck didn't go over well in Finland because he wasn't wearing pants...anyhoo, that is such a neat idea - unfortunately english major here, my disseration will probably be on something extreme dry someday like 19th century Sentimental literature...let us know what you decide!

I just wanted to give you some book suggestions..

I just wrote a 70 page honors thesis on consumer capitalism at Epcot and I have come across alot of books...

Im not sure if they will all be helpful of if they will all deal with the subject matter you are workign with...but they are a start...

Inside the Mouse by the Project on Disney
Inside Disney by Eve Zibart
Deconstructing Disney by Eleanor Byrne and Martin McQuillan
Dazzled by Disney by Wasko, Phillips and Meehan (Wonderful resource if you are going the global impact route)
From Mouse to Mermaid by Eliz Bell , Lynda Haas, and Laura Sells

Thats jsut the major books I used...There are a ton of journal articles available too that shoudl be helpful!!

Music student here who somehow managed to include a chapter on Song of the South in her dissertation There's always a way...

Hey!

I did my American Studies honors thesis about Disney World! The name of it was Robotic Presidents: Disney's Representation of American History Through the Hall of Presidents and the American Adventure. It was mostly about those two attractions and their representation (and therefore Disney's) of American history and culture. I also talked about Disney's impact on American culture a little bit. Plus my school gave me money to go to WDW to do research!!

I agree that all of the books other people have suggested are great. Vinyl Leaves was my bible when I was doing the paper. Also try Mickey Mouse History except I can't remember the offer right now and there are lots of journal articles written about Disney if your school has a good library they should have a lot of them or if they have a good academic journal data base that wouldbe good too. I feel like I'm forgetting some. I'll have to look at my Disney shelf when I go home tonight.
