If I am on the Disney Dining plan but choose not to use my TS for a character dinner, do I get 20 percent off the total? I am little confused as to how that all works?? Do I show them anything or just tell them I am on the DDP?

Thanks!

You are referring to the Disney Dining Experience -- you would get 20% off your total.

The DDE card you pay a fee per year.

Disney dining Plan is different from the Disney Dining Experience Card

With the DDE Card you get 20% of your total bill (including alch). and is valid for one year. Not all restuarants honor the card (haven't found a counter service place at MGM that will take it)

The Disney Dining Plan you must preorder before you checkin, and you pay for at checkin. The cost for adults now is 38.99 / day / person in your room.
Think of it as a college meal plan but with MUCH better food.
Each person is allowed, 1 sit down dinner, 1 counter service dinner and one snack per day.

ITA with the PPs. You are confusing the DDE with the Dining Plan.

If you have an AP, the DDE will pay for itself. But I don't think you can buy it unless you have an AP. And if you've bought the Dining Plan (or have it "free" or whatever), you won't need the DDE, anyway. :)
