Thank you. My hope is that it stays a cold. Generally it turns into croup. Might be taking the nebulizer with us. They told us he would grow out of this as his lungs matured. I wonder when that will be???

I just got a PM from Denise

BK is sick now and Denise is really sick - she said she might try to post but sounds like they are all wiped out!!!

Feel Better denise!! and BK!! :wizard: :grouphug:

We were in New Mexico for Thanksgiving and I asked Abi (9) if she wanted to go sit on Santa's lap...she said no he's not the real one and he's too skinny :rotfl:

I really looked at him then and they had a string bean with a pillow stomach as Santa.

I know that this is my last Christmas with Santa and she knows that those are Santa's helpers in the malls but please couldn't they have had a more realistic helper

Abi is still a bit frightened of characters in the suits and out.....and we had to explain to her about the person in the suit at an early age because she would literally crawl up to the highest spot if she saw any thing closer than about 100 yards. SO I always am happy when I can convince her to even go close to santa. We'll see how she handles WDW next summer

Just got this email. I think it is worth passing on, even though it's kinda long.

I BELIEVE IN SANTA CLAUS

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid.
I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the way my big
sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she
jeered. "Even dummies know that!"

My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day
because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told
the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a
whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her "world-famous" cinnamon
buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so. It had to
be true.

Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her
everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus?" she
snorted...."Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going
around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad!! Now, put on your coat,
and let's go."

"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second
world-famous cinnamon bun.

"Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town
that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its
doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars.

That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy
something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then
she turned and walked out of Kerby's.

I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother,
but never had I shopped for anything all by myself.

The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish
their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused,
clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and
who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my
friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my
church.

I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He
was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in
Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class.

Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out to
recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the
teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that
Bobby Decker didn't have a cough; he didn't have a good coat. I fingered
the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a
coat!

I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real
warm, and he would like that.

"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter
asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.

"Yes, ma'am," I replied shyly. "It's for Bobby."

The nice lady smiled at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a
good winter coat. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag,
smiled again, and wished me a Merry Christmas.

That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat (a little tag fell out of
the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible) in Christmas paper and
ribbons and wrote, "To Bobby, From Santa Claus" on it. Grandma
said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to
Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever
officially, one of Santa's helpers.

Grandma parked down the street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept
noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me
a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going."

I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down
on his step, pounded his door and flew back to the safety of the bushes
and Grandma.

Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to
open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.

Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering,
beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes.

That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were
just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well,
and we were on his team. I still have the Bible, with the coat
tag tucked inside: $19.95.

May you always have LOVE to share, HEALTH to spare and FRIENDS that
care...

And may you always believe in the magic of Santa Claus!

OK, now I am crying! I DO believe in Santa so this came as no surprise to me! :goodvibes

I had croup as a child. I remember walking to the YMCA and coughing, and swimming in the winter and being told I sounded like a foghorn. I am assuming that I was old enough to walk to the Y alone, so probably 10? Hope it is sooner for Nicholas!

Since its the holidays - I have very little time right now. I decided to take the time to read the story. It was great!!! I think I'll do it in calligraphy so when Matt asks the inevitable question, I will be ready to handle it. Thanks for letting me believe for just a little longer.

I pm'ed her last night -

I hope everything is okay - she was online at 6:30 last night but hasn't posted since Tuesday night -

hopefully she is just busy getting ready for the holidays - I would imagine with her crew - she has a ton going on!!!

Hi, everyone. No, unfortunately I am really, really sick and Brantley-Kate has been vomiting for 24 hours... I can barely catch my breath from coughing. I'm on antibiotics and a nebulizer, but it's not helping. Hopefully, we'll make it to the Christmas Party at school tomorrow.

Oh, and we had a huge ice storm in Atlanta last pm. Roads are ok, but we lost tons of limbs off trees. It will likely refreeze tonight. Fun- NOT!

I was wondering about her too. Doesn't she work and have choir on Wednesdays? She's probably pooped.

I do teach on W and F. Choir is on 'break' until January- Yea!

OK - OK for the whole world to know; Kate sent me a PM asking if I was ok and that was BEFORE Amy posted about missing me. Sorry Amy, I can not tell a lie! Too bad this was over before it was started, I was popping some pop corn!!

It's okay Martha. We all know Kate's the most compassionate. :teeth:

I wonder how long I'd have to go without posting to receive a special PM from Kate? :rotfl:

Amy :)

Hey Elin - I'm at work up north. What's the weather down our way?

Alyssa is the same way. She sat on his lap once, now she won't have anything to do with him. When we went to our party last weekend, I asked her the same thing: how will Santa know what you want? She looked at her brother and said "Nicholas, will you tell him for me?"

It's not looking too promising for Mickey and friends either. I keep asking her if she will give him and hug and her response is a definite NO. Now, the princesses or those without costumes, that might be different.

When we went in October with our friends, they have a not-quite three year old who didn't like ANY characters. Toward the end of the trip we were at AK and there were characters out front. Nancy and I each took a hold of John's hand and we approached Baloo (the character, not the moderator :teeth: ). John walked with us slowly and I yelled that sorry Baloo, John is afraid. Well, Baloo sat on the ground (not an easy feat for a big guy) and waved to have John walk over slowly. Because we've been to Disney before, I understood some of the gestures that Baloo was making. He asked John to feel his fur on his hand. John let me stroke Baloo's hand with John's hand tucked in mine. All the while I was speaking softly to John:

See John, he has soft fur. Then Baloo wanted to touch John's hand and I said "do you have soft fur like Baloo?" and John laughed because he knew he didn't. We actually turned a corner with that visit. He got a little closer and shook his hand at the end. On the last day John actually hugged Mickey and said Bye Mickey!!

The point is that the characters are used to children being afraid. Try to find one that has no line and you will be surprised to see how well they handle it. I would recommend that you go up and spend time with the character so that Alyssa will see that you are not afraid. Don't push her at all - by the end of the week she may be ready to say hello to one of them. If she realizes that nobody else seems to be afraid, she may try (or may not try) to socialize with them. But think about it -- its a big furry thing, probably twice or three times her size. I'd be afraid too!!!
