Disney Dates Animated Films 'Zootopia,' 'Moana'

Zootopia' centers on a fast-talking Fox while 'Moana' is set in the South Pacific following a teen explorer

On the heels of the successful opening on Big Hero 6, Disney Animation Studios announced 2016 release dates for two of its upcoming animated films, Zootopia and Moana.

Zootopia, which follows a fast-talking fox who dreams of making it big will hit theaters on March 4, 2016 in 3D while Moana, centering on a Polynesian teen, will open on Nov. 23, 2016 in 3D.

Tangled helmer Byron Howard is directing Zootopia film from a script by Jared Bush.

The film is opening against Fox’s YA adaptation Peregrine's Home for Peculiars.

Directed by the filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker, Moana is set in the South Pacific and follows a teen who sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

This will be the first CG-animated movie from Clements and Musker, the team behind Disney classic The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. (They also directed The Princess and the Frog.)

Moana currently has the 2016 Thanksgiving weekend date to itself.

Disney Animation's latest, Big Hero 6, took the No. 1 spot at the box office this past weekend, earning a strong $56 million.

Glad to see that Big Hero 6 is being well received both critically and commercially. In my opinion everything they've released since The Princess and the Frog has been pretty good, and it clearly has been well received by the public as well. It's good to see that Disney can still produce great animated features.

Can't wait for both Moana and Zootopia, although I wish they had another movie lined up for 2015.

Do you mean specifically Disney animation? Cause I can think of Cinderella, Tomorrowland, and Inside Out in 2015 off the top of my head if you're only looking for Dis movies in general. At least the latter two look very interesting.

I am excited about any and all Disney movies at this point in my life...

I'm looking forward to those, but I'm mostly talking about Disney Animation Studios. I do see the reason for them not to release a movie in 2015 though. Pixar is releasing 2 if I recall, and Disney Motion Pictures has a couple as well.
