Hurricane Irene is heading for the Eastern Carribean and I was wondering what the cruise ships do if they know a hurricane is on the way?

Has anyone been on a Disney cruise and sailed during a hurricane?

Tony, for the most part the ships can sail around the bad weather. Sometimes, if there is bad weather they cannot dock at a particular port, meaning you will get an extra sea day or (if they can) they might change the itinerary slightly.

Thanks Joh, I should have just called you. :goodvibes

lol, yes you should ;)

It's always good to get the perspective of someone who has experienced it though as I am only stating what I have heard/read :)

We booked a wester a few years back but hurricane Ernesto had other ideas - first we knew was at the port when wee discovered we were going to experience an Easter itinery instead! They do not sail into the path of the storms and just means you could get a mystery tour. It did not detract at all from the cruise except that we still haven't been to Key West! I'm sure you'll have a great time whatever happens

Yes, they will change the itinerary to avoid the storm. It's in the cruise contract that they can do that, so if bad weather the cruise can be very different than expected. I haven't heard of cruises being cancelled, but yes, you may miss ports or completly changed itinerary.
