Many people said I can do this - drop off my family to the port (and let my wife have my passport), then I can return rental car and take shuttle back to port. In the meantime, since my wife have my passport so she can proceed with check-in etc on behalf of me.

I only need to show my Driver's License in order to go thru the security gate etc. Does this apply to only U.S. resident, or it is also applicable to Canadians (i.e. showing Canadian Driver License).

I am assuming it is yes, as I could board the ship in Mexico and Grand Cayman with just a drivers license.

Yes you can do this. All your wife needs to register you in is your passport. As for getting back into the port, you will need your drivers license as your name will be listed on their master list.

We did this back in 2005 so unless something has changed. All DH has was his drivers licence as I had his passport to check us in.
