Curious for input from anyone that has done both a Disney Cruise and a cruise on another liner (Carnival for instance) Which did you prefer. We are trying to decide. We love Disney but the price tag on a cruise is soo much more than the other lines. Is the DC worth the price?

As to whether it's "worth it" to you, that's up to you.

We've cruised on 3 other lines to date, and I prefer Disney. BUT, we also pick our cruises based on itinerary, so sometimes another line has a better itinerary than DCL (Alaska, for example).

I feel DCL is worth it, for me. But, we've started not buying as much onboard (excursions, photos, no more Palo) with the increased costs just to book the cruise.

We have done both, Carnival first & Disney second & DCL definitely takes the award for best cruise between the two. We really enjoyed Carnival but we LOVED Disney!! Carnival is a good starter cruise, lol, once you go Disney its hard to go back. In fact we have a Carnival cruise in Oct that we are doing with my inlaws bc they would not cruise Disney due to the higher cost. I am not disappointed by any means but definitely wish we were cruising Disney. We are in the midst of planning our next Disney cruise.
The price is higher but you get what you pay for!! :-) As for Disney characters, we stood in line at most 20 min so that was awesome! Our kids were not huge fans of the Carnival kids camp so were hesitant to go to Disney kids club but they quickly fell for it once trying, the kids camp counselors are amazing, cast members are awesome, just all around great cruise!!

We did RCCL and the good and bad were equal. Food RCCL wins, entertainment DCL wins, service was tie, price RCCL for sure and we did double suite on RCCL with way better percs than DCL, for much less than 7 day Fantasy, on royal suite we got free bottle of decent champs and snacks basket in room. For kids DCL but I hear Oasis and allure on RCCL are comparable. Itineraries RCCL has more choices and port choices. Hated the casino on royal b/c of smoking.

I think that DCL was a "better" cruise line than the other ones we have been on. DCL is 3-4 times the cost of those other cruise lines. Was DCL 400% better? In my opinion, no. I think everyone that is a Disney fan, or who has a child(ren) should cruise DCL one time just for the magic of it all.

In my opinion:
As far as ports of call- DCL is inferior to most other cruise line itineraries.

Food- DCL was inferior to quality, healthy foods. Junk and fancy stuff they were superior.

Activities on board- Disney wins, hands down! We had 9 (I think) sea days on our WBPC cruise...it was worth every penny to have all the onboard activities and child care.

Rooms- A room is just a room to me. You sleep there. We had much better "housekeeping" services on other cruise lines.

Upcharges- DCL used to not have many of these, but they are really starting to be equal to other cruise lines.

Incentives to cruise again- DCL basically stinks at trying to maintain its past customers.

Staff- We are split on this one. Our servers (even at breakfast and lunch) were terrible...seriously, disappointing. We kept talking about how we wished we tipped per meal instead of one lump at the end to our dinner team. It was like "oh, you are not on my dinner rotation, I have nothing to earn from you." But the kids club and guest services were great as were the photographers and characters team.

How old are your kids??? It just all depends on what you are looking for. I cruised Royal Caribbean inbetween 2 Disney cruises and I liked the RCI experience. However we have a 2.5 year old and Disney has more for them. RCI would be 2nd for toddler things. RCI has more for teens to do in terms of actual activities- flowrider, Rick climbing wall, ice skating, etc. I like that there is sooo much to do on those ships for the older ones. We have a celebrity cruise and will go on Carnival's new ship next year. But we might sneak in another Disney cruise too for my 40th because I cannot fathom a year without a DCL cruise while my kiddo is still so young. We are vacation junkies though.

I been on 17 DCL cruises and one rccl cruise. The rccl was a 12 night cruise they had one good show out of the 12 nights. Rccl was out to nickel and dime you also. Food was equal. Service was equal.

Personally I didn't feel RCCL had more charges than DCL. In fact in some areas, DCL is worse. Yes Royal charges for pop, but Disney puts brightly colored specialty drinks in front of kids and then gets the parents to buy them at exorbanent prices. They have popcorn for a FEE, along with beverages for a fee, outside the theatre and shows. Things that kids will want their parents to spend money on. And their prices are SOOOO much higher. 3-4 times higher for a cabana on the beach for example. DCL is great for sure. But I don't know what I will do as my son gets older in terms of what line to go on.

RCI's specialty dining prices are similar and less expensive in some cases to Disney's.

Service was the similar enough on both. Although we had an outstanding and perfect waiter on RCI and one did (out of 3 on DCL.)

But, we've started not buying as much onboard (excursions, photos, no more Palo) with the increased costs just to book the cruise.

Makes sense. Alas, my family didn't spend much on DCL to begin with, so that money can't be so easily cut. We bought $90 worth of pictures on the first cruise and they have been looked at two times. It's annoying because on each DCL cruise we've been on, the photographers have showed up on 2/3 or 3/4 (or 2/4 once) of the evenings at dinner. We haven't yet gotten a complete set. I don't quite understand that. We won't wait in lines, we don't take the time to find photographers. We rent a float on CC. We once got a cabana but that's a one-and-done. Palo brunch twice, Palo dinner once...not worth it even though it's officially not that expensive. There's just not room to cut to make the new prices available to us. I look at price per night, but I ALSO look at total cost. and cutting out Palo brunch just doesn't give us the room to budget it.

I do enjoy the island 5K! THAT is something DCL has that others don't.

I really should come up with a "blurb" to paste in for questions like this.

There's nothing *wrong* with DCL. But I'm very much a "price for what you get" person, and DCL just doesn't get the ratio right for what you pay. IMO.

Our first family cruise (vs our honeymoon cruise) was a 3 night concierge cruise when the upgrade to concierge was only $300 TOTAL more than what we had booked. (category V on Dream) It was 720.22/night.

That's our most expensive per-night cruise. (second most is another Dream concierge, but still when prices weren't heart attack worthy) Third most was an INSIDE cabin, 4 nighter, 575.415/night. Come on.

Freedom of the seas 7 nighter, wonderful cruise, great time (though we had been sick the 3 weeks leading to it, and slept a LOT to make up for the lack of sleep we had had while trying to get better). 466.51/night So much better. Ice skating, ice skating show. We don't go to the other production shows anyway (not even on DCL) so we don't care about that. Availability of flow rider and rock wall. Ben and Jerry's ice cream available. Packages that include lattes, bottled water, sparkling water, fresh squeezed (they have a machine squeezing oranges in the buffet there) OJ...there is no package on DCL that includes those things. We don't drink soda so that's just money we're paying in to subsidize others' soda habits on Disney. And Freedom is gorgeous, we had a terrific aft corner balcony room with a HUGE balcony.

Since we hadn't been sick leading into it, probably our best cruise so far was on Vision of the seas, and it was 324.50/night. We were never bored, especially not DS. He was in the kid's club (he loves Royal's program more than Disney's because the counselors actually play with the kids, they aren't just on the periphery), he was participating in dance sessions (he dances) with adults who were total strangers, etc etc. Great time. Only bad note on that cruise was because they have a "centrum", we had bad weather, the casino opens out into the centrum, and after the first 24 hours the smoke was coming out of the casino and filling the centrum (not just going UP but making it hard to be downstairs from the casino as well). But I am VEHEMENTLY anti-smoking, I am also asthmatic (thanks to genetics and parents smoking on me), and I have a sensitive nose. It wouldn't be as hard for other people.

We feel we get more on Royal than on Disney. We aren't interested in Cinderella or Mickey Mouse, we don't go to the big performance numbers (not sure what I'll do if DS ever gets a job onboard, LOL). We don't swim on DCL because their pools are tiny little cesspools. (I prefer a bigger cesspool, and Royal has those, though they are not heated) DS has fun in Disney clubs, but he has MORE fun on Royal's.

We are vegetarian and the veg offerings on Dream have, for the most part, been terrible. AP's potato celeriac gratin is a standout dish for me, but plenty of others hate it. The rest of the entrees, holy moly, ick. When a grown adult has to get the kid's mac and cheese because the dishes on pirate night are so bad, that's just sad. YES they will make Indian food for you after the first night if you request it that first night...should that *have to* happen? Or maybe they could just OFFER a vegetarian Indian menu?

On Royal we will still often ask for vegetarian Indian food*, but they actually have some decent veggie meals on some of the nights. There's no standout great veg dish like on Dream, because there are more good dishes (and none AS bad as on Dream) on Royal's menus.

I could go on and on LOL. Short story, we feel that Royal gives us more for our money.

Someday we'll try Celebrity because I've read that they are very similar in food/offerings as their sister Royal, but their casino is smoke-FREE. This will enable my husband to get in some light gambling, which he enjoys, without having to throw away his clothes before entering our stateroom. :)

*(if you're wondering about that, OP, apparently many of the chefs onboard are Indian, and they are cooking for themselves and other Indian national employees, and if you ask for them to include you, they will make enough for those who ask for it)

I don't think anyone can answer that question for you. It's just way too subjective. I have been very happy with my DCL cruises. If I like a company I tend to be very loyal. Sprint-10 years, Direct TV 18 years, Costco 20 years. I buy everything from Amazon, I buy all my shoes at Famous Footwear, I shop at kohls, love Universal resorts in Orlando, always Beach club and Wilderness lodge at WDW, Hilton honors member, I cruise on DCL....well you get the picture. I swear one of these days I'm going to try RCI I just have to find the right cruise.:tilt:

I will say as far as shows go I hate the shows on DCl. I think they're great if your under 10, but even that's subjective because my kids hate them. When people say the shows on DCL are good I just wonder how bad the shows on the other cruise lines are. I've always thought kid movies were a form of torture for parents so it's probably just me.

If you like Royal, you will LOOOOVE Celebrity. They are the fancier big sister. Not stuffier, just nicer. They have cushions on the deck chairs, lots of comfortable books to sit in. I've heard good things about the good club- they just lack sports like activities for the teens, IMO. And items for the little little kids. So no splash pad, no water park, no rock climbing wall, no ice skating, no flow rider. But service is top notch, their cabins are great and mostly well thought out- the bathrooms are the best at sea IMO. I think you'll love them!

i would have said yes until recently. with the cut backs and the prices rising rising rising i now say no. full disclosure, i haven't sailed another line yet however we are booked to sail the oasis this year and i'm looking forward to it. a lot! not sure what we will do between now and when we cruise royal but it will not be dcl.
we can afford dcl but we choose to no longer afford dcl. they, in my mind, have become a little to cocky and i just don't like it. if all goes well on the oasis sailing it may be a very long time before we head back to dcl. not saying never, just saying not soon.
have a great cruise however you decide to go.

When I read your second paragraph, I chuckle because Disney shows are the only ones I don't doze off at some point while watching them. :tilt:

I also completely agree everything is subjective. I think it is good to check out the features different ships offer and what appeals to the original poster. No two cruises will ever be the same even if you are on the same ship and on the same itinerary.

I know what I like on cruise ships. Currently for me, it is Disney as it combines both my love of cruising and my love of Disney. It also offers to me as a long time cruiser a lot of the old time cruise feel with some of the new amenities I most enjoy. The majority of my cruises on other lines came prior to my first Disney cruise in 2009. Although I have enjoyed all my cruises (with only a few issues here or there), I now prefer Disney. After cruising Disney, when I am on another line, I miss the Disney vibe.

My post is based on my experience traveling on 6 Carnival, 6 Royal Caribbean, 4 Princess, 4 NCL, 4 Disney and 1 Celebrity since the age of 14. A few weeks ago I booked my cruise for next summer and yes, it will be Disney again.

Best wishes to the original poster on whatever cruise you choose. I hope you will enjoy cruising as much as I do.

:D We love the casino, even though we never use it. It's a huge revenue source for RCL, so everyone who uses it subsidizes everyone who doesn't. Having a casino on board that we never enter reduces our cruise costs :D

I am platinum on DCL and am losing that lovin' feeling for DCL. I just can't see where DCL is better anymore.

I just returned from a New Year's sailing on RCI Freedom of the Seas in a grand suite. I've also sailed on Carnival (regular balcony and suites.) I just can't justify the cost of DCL for what they offer. DCL has superior kid's club spaces; but my 10 year old isn't into the clubs anymore. The friendliness of employees, cleanliness of the ship, quality of the food, and service for dining are all comparable. DCL's itineraries are pretty repetitive; understandable with a small fleet of 4 ships. I've done a TA and Alaska as well as plenty of Bahamas and West / East Caribbean itineraries on DCL. After 10 cruises on DCL (all 4 ships,) I have seen all of the shows more than once. I enjoyed the different entertainment options and was floored by the ice skating show on RCI. The FLOWRIDER was insanely fun and a real plus for RCI. As a boy mom, I liked the lack of emphasis on princesses, lol! We had the Dreamworks characters on last week's cruise and they did an impressive parade through the Promenade of the ship. (Full disclosure, my 10 year old is no longer into characters.) I prefer the stringent smoking policies on DCL; the casinos on Carnival and Royal Caribbean allow smoking and at times, the smoke drifts into non-smoking areas of the ship.

The price difference is crazy... our grand suite with concierge service on RCI last week was 40% cheaper than a regular verandah room on DCL for the same week. That kind of price difference isn't justified by "free" sodas, lol. If the price is reasonable, I'd be glad to sail DCL again. I'd like to do another Alaska cruise (did DCL out of Vancouver last June) and itinerary and price are going to be the big drivers for me.

There are lots of great options for families who like to cruise.

I take it from your question that this may be your first cruise. If that's the case, I'd choose Disney if you have young kids, and RCL if you don't - or if they're teens. The two lines are probably the closest in quality, overall cruise experience and passenger demographic. Disney's better at some things, RCL's better at others, and mostly they tie. We've done Carnival, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first cruise choice - actually, I'd have a tough time recommending it at all. We've done 10 Disney cruises, about 35 RCL cruises along with a half dozen each on HAL and Princess. We usually switch back & forth between Disney and RCL depending on itinerary and cost. In May we got a Disney cruise for less than RCL so we did Disney. Next October, we chose Dream over RCL because we liked the itinerary better out of Port Canaveral.

While I think Disney provides a great experience, I don't recommend them over other lines I've sailed. If I had the choice between Disney and Celebrity, I'd choose Celebrity in a heartbeat. Also, we love Carnival. Their newer ships are FABULOUS! After sailing the Breeze last summer, my husband has finally jumped on the Carnival bandwagon. The rest of us have been on it all along. The older, smaller ships are what they are - small and "brightly" decorated. We like those, too. Of my four kids, only one ever liked kids clubs...and he preferred Carnival's over Disney's. Go figure. :) YMMV

USA Today reader's choice awards has Carnival at #1.

Whether or not DCL's prices are worth it is something only you can decide for your family. They stopped being worth it a few years back for ours.
