Disney COO Thomas Staggs Steps Down

I think they more decided they weren't going to put any of their own money into it so it was left to decay. If a sponsor wanted to build something they would have jumped all over it.

Bingo...

The sponsor model is broken and that has killed a lot of Epcot.

An excellent read...
I must admit - I never knew about Eisner's move against Barry diller.

Diller was - of course - eisners mentor at paramount and abc.

Iger is not NEARLY as good as he thinks he is - that is for sure.

I read this years ago. Good insight into the Corporate politics of Disney. Mostly about Eisner's regime...but still insightful as they (business analysts) are claiming here we go again with the lack of a succession plan for Iger. Interesting read and $13 bucks on Kindle.

I'm going to Amazon now...thank you :)

Correction: Disney war...is a fantastic book that any Disney fan should read (I have others too)

I read it on Royal carribean in 2005 right after it came out. And have read it again since.

Still great post

For some reason though, Disney seem to have concluded that science and education aren't a draw for kids, and thus Future World is left to decay.

Disney also decided that backstage moviemaking attractions aren't a draw, nor are national pavilions, zoological based rides and attractions ... in fact they don't think that anything is a draw any more except for attractions which re-tell the stories of cartoon and sci-fi blockbusters.

Even in the days when "The Mouse" was more about "The Mouse" than anything else, Disneyland was full of attractions based on science, commerce, acrobats, music, unique shopping, and a lot of rides not based on any "property".

Now they're in danger of becoming Johnny One-Note. Because they lack imagination and they have no faith in the taste and discrimination of their customers.

It's odd that they gave up on Epcot so readily. It was the number two park in Orlando and number three overall (if I'm not mistaken) for a reason. It was a good park that managed to entertain all ages without being preachy. At least we always thought so. My young son adored it educational aspects and all.

Well their customers keep coming in record numbers so...

So, when I was reading that article about Tom Staggs resignation and Stanley Gold says he did the right thins to resign because he thinks Disney is getting a bit greedy. So does this mean it's a wake up call for Disney to end their greedy hullabaloo and Bob Iger stop being a greedy miser?

Absolutely not...they're gonna double down and go on a path of eventual breakup or being sold to someone else...

That's what snake oil peddlers - aka public stock companies - do.

It's s brave new world

Big problem for Disney is and was the loss of Roy Disney...he was their foil for 30 years + and not just because of his name. He provided "soul" that is gone and not coming back.

Look, I know what their doing is not going to end, but what you're saying is Disney going bankrupt?

You're assuming the customers aren't trendy, shortsighted...and frankly stupid.

I don't.

I have no trouble believing that most of their customers are stupid. The world proves the overwhelming stupidity of the human race to me on a daily basis. :)

More seriously though I think the quality and pricing will eventually be an issue. But more MK style in the other parks? No I think that's what a lot of their customers actually want.

I have lost count of the Epcot is boring, Animal Kingdom is just a zoo etc. complaints that I've heard over the years.

Not what I'm saying...I'm saying they will be run with an increasing level of board room Bottomline cut throat business models and could eventually be sold to someone bigger who could fraction it up.

The thing about DISNEY that many of us really have admired...is that while its been public traded for along time...it's been run on a different model...they sold things that may not be 100% stock return because the board and the stock holders trusted that it was a different animal.

Recent things/decisions have all but eroded the confidence in that...it's gonna be more Bottomline as things continue.

In other words the "Disney" in Disney is essentially gone. It's just another multi-national multi-billion dollar conglomerate.

It is...and I don't like to go this route because it sounds so preachy/whiney.

But it really is a REAL thing. And Bob Iger has become the problem...just like the last guy.

He's drunk off the control, manipulates a puppet board, and operates with no checks at all.

If this Shanghai thing is a disaster...he should be fired for it. He pushed it. If ESPN crashes/can't go subscription...he should be fired for it. He rode it into the ground without response.

But that wouldn't happen...the board room would laugh and look the other way.
Remember what got Eisner out (he needed to go)...it wasn't stock analysts...it was one heavy hitter with a single, loud voice. And...Diane Disney behind the scenes not supporting him (a weird partnership indeed)

That can't happen anymore. They are gone.

Is the Disney Family out of the corporate picture now? Do they even have the majority of stock?

The family of walts two daughters (both passed) divested a long time ago...they do private things - aka live off the old legacy.

Roy E had been one of the top 3 individual stockholders for decades...but he died in 2009 and his second wife is an outsider who wound never have say or gravitas...

If I remember correctly - the largest Individual owners are Mrs Jobs (from the Pixar deal), Iger, and Eisner (permenantly seething in the weeds)

There is no "Disney" in Disney. Roy ousting walts son in law in 84 made that inevitable. Walt/Roy had something like 11 grandchildren and none of them ever had any involvement. Some are/were openly petulant too.

Actually I believe Ike Perlmutter the Marvel CEO is number 2 and George Lucas is up there both because of the big acquisitions. Mrs Jobs is still number one though.

At the time of the Marvel buyout Perlmutter was the largest shareholder. I believe he is now #3 behind Jobs and then Lucas.

Perlmutter is an odd one. He's obsessively private (try finding a current photo of him anywhere online) and he refused a seat on the Disney board. I don't think he would be interested in a public facing role of any sort. Even with his recent political losses regarding Marvel films you have to assume he has substantial influence when he wants to though.
