While a refurb was previously rumored/suspected, this is now posted on Disney’s CR page:

Starting in April 2021, Disney's Contemporary Resort will begin a refurbishment to reimagine Guest rooms. While some Main Tower rooms will be unavailable during the refurbishment, most resort areas and amenities will still be available for Guests to enjoy.

I guess we can debate the meaning of “most”. :-)

Will they be fully redoing all the rooms in the tower or just a sprucing up? I don't stay there anymore due to the bathrooms lack of storage.

The test rooms they did in 2019 looked like gut jobs from the few blogger shots that got posted (although those were inconclusive as to the whole extent of the room work). WL and Poly’s current renovations are gut jobs.

While Disney hasn’t announced anything, my guess/assumption is that these will be similar - but TBD of course. They may go with something smaller/quicker to be done by the 50th, who knows.

April/May-late Sept (which is when tower availability starts up again) isn’t all that long, but not short either.

What did they look like?

The outside doesn’t look bad, especially when it’s compared to the darker colors of the current ones. I like how the decoration in the hall is obvious but also not in your face. Hopefully the inside will be like that

Yeah, I tend to agree.

I should note, those were just test rooms. No guarantees whatever Disney has up its sleeve matches this, or if they do something else.
