I have a question. If we were to use points for a reservation at the Poly, does that then become a regular Disney resort reservation? Can you pay cash to upgrade the room to a different view? Also, can you link that reservation with a family member paying cash, for purposes of requesting connecting rooms? I've never used points for the Disney Collection before, so not 100% sure how it works! Thanks!

You probably won't be able to pay cash to upgrade your view. You can add "traveling with" to both your reservations and they might be able to put you close to each other.

When we had a reservation on points at the CR before BLT was built, we also had a cash reservation. We asked if we could stay in the same room for both reservation and told that DVC reservations are never upgraded but must stay as they are.

In the past they would often upgrade you or give you the best house room available outside club levels but I believe that has changed years ago. You can certainly make the request but there's no way to guarantee it.

What's the point in using DVC points for another WDW resort, other than just wanting to stay there? And how big of a room do you get? Doesn't seem like a good use of points to me but maybe I'm missing something.

It's definitely not a good use of points and all you get is a traditional room. We did it a few years ago and stayed at the Contemporary. I was 7-months pregnant at the time and really wanted to stay on the Monorail (for obvious reasons). The Polynesian will always be my favorite resort, so cashing in points to stay there once in awhile is a good trade-off for me. :-)

trading for a week in a hotel room at the poly in the first week of december 2013 would run 366 pts for a garden view plus the $95 trade fee...

roughly that same amount of pts with no $95 fee would just about score you a 2BR theme park view villa at BLT for the same period.

both on the monorail - but one's a 1150 square feet villa with separate bed rooms, a full kitchen and washer/dryer with a theme park view vs. a 400 sq ft hotel room with a garden view.

and if you have to cancel the poly stay, then the pts can no longer be used for DVC villas.

it's a better deal to stick with the villas, but if you have family staying at the poly, then it's nice to have that option, i guess.

The only time I've done it is when a DVC room was not available and I had points to use.

Years ago, when there were only two DVC resorts at WDW, it gave members the opportunity to stay at other WDW resorts. Now, there is a DVC resort at nearly every deluxe resort, so no need to use points for the WDW resorts.

At DL, there is still only one DVC and three DL hotels. So if you can't book VGC, you can use them at PP or DH.

If there is availability at a DVC resort. The last time I used the Disney Collection at WDW there were no rooms anywhere for the Sunday night in mid October that I wanted before a business trip, about 3 weeks before.

At Disneyland you can also use points at all 3 DL resorts, including GCH, with no fee.
