Rather than distort the original theatrical image, Walt Disney Studios' classic animated features have historically been tagged with black bars on the sides when played on widescreen TV sets. However, some fans have complained that the bars take away from their viewing experience.

So, starting with "Pinocchio" due March 10th, animator Toby Bluth has created "decorative" bars, dubbed Disney View, which will frame the Blu-ray version. The standard DVD edition will continue to use plain black bars.

"It supports the film, and is at most an accompaniment," said Bluth, who created 16 sets of Disney View bars for "Pinocchio." "There aren't any panels that distract from the film. They are like theatrical set pieces framing the action."

Disney View is expected to be used with the studio's next classic animated Blu-ray release in October, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

If you watch an ad for "Pinocchio" on a TV channel broadcasting in HD, you can see what the bars look like. :)

So, if "nothing" is distracting, how is "something" going to be less distracting? Makes no sense whatsoever.

This is going to upset everyone who has invested in a procenium with variable matting big time if it can't be shut off.

I haven't seen images of this yet, so maybe it isn't as bad as I am picturing, but I am not thrilled with this idea. The edges of my TV are black and the wall behind the TV is dark, plus we usually watch movies with the lights off and curtains closed. So the black bars blend in enough that I don't even notice them. I don't want a patterned border around the movie! I chose my television partly because I wanted black around the screen because I tend to notice the silver edges around some television screens during movies and I find it distracting. I do not understand how they can think that themed borders would be less distracting than plain black borders. I really, really hope we will have the option to turn this feature off!

Our local regional sports network was broadcasting a pre-season baseball game this weekend. I'm guessing they didn't bring the HD equipment because although I was watching it on the HD feed, the picture itself was 4:3. When they do this, they put styled bars on the sides, with "NESNHD" down the sides. I realized as I was watching it that it game me a "tunnel effect" - I felt as if things were smaller and I was looking down a tunnel to see the picture.

Please tell me black bars are an option...
