I have heard a lot about the AKL transportation problems with the bus system, but when we were at WDW in April, we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge. It had problems, too. The boats and the monorail were great! The bus system was quite variable. Occasionally, we would get a bus in reeasonable time and get to where we were going. Usually this occurred if we were leaving the hotel. If we were trying to get back, it took much longer. At the AK, we waited 20-30 minutes for a bus along with the other people going to the deluxes--Poly, GF, Contemp. I thought that was too long in the middle of the afternoon with a sleepy 2 yo. There were no benches to wait on either. So it took close to an hour to get back to WL. We tried to go to dinner several times. If it involved buses, it was a marathon to get there and to get back. I would recommend doubling the amount of time that you think you will need to get there on time for your reservation. Unfortunately, WDW seems to discourage taxicabs. After it took us an hour and a half to get to the Boardwalk, it took us less than 10 minutes to get back to WL in a cab. Only rarely will you find a cab waiting as they are apparently discouraged. Keep a number with you as the CM's won't recommend one. Driving arental is a good idea, but we were intimidated by the layout of WDW roads--not at right angles. If we could have read at night in the room after the kids were in bed, we may have had time to learn the roads better. A WDW transportation guide would be a good idea. If you are at this place and need to get to that place, you do x, y, and z to get there at this time of day. It can take you between r and s minutes to get there.

Good luck with the bus system! Aackk!

We go often and the buses are erratic, some days they are only 10 or 15 minutes apart and other times you wait for 30 to 45 minutes!! Driving around WDW is not bad at all, there are plenty of signs to direct you to the parks and resort hotels. We always allow an hour to travel the bus system from park to resort.
