Disney Bucks?

Are Disney Bucks still around? Available for purchase and accepted as payment at WDW? Trying to find a creative way for an 8 year old boy to earn his spending money. He doesn't seem to think it's necessary since his dad (my bf) buys him stuff. Thought Disney Bucks might be a good idea. My backup plan will be a gift card.

I know they were discontinued (I believe just within the last year), but I'm sure someone else has the information on when they officially stopped and why.
