For those of you who travel often what is the tipping etiquette for the valet. Do you tip them to park your car and then again when they go and get your car for you? On a daily basis?

My DH and I generally do not use valet but given the parking at the hotels with valet we were curious.

My basic valet tipping policy is to give a tip when you hand the car key to the person who is taking your car away to park it AND give a tip to the person who is handing you back your key when they bring your car back around for you to use. Each valet (the one who stows your car and the one who retrieves it) are doing you a service by ferrying your car safely. This is how I tip when at Dland hotels with valet and how I tip up here in the SF Bay Area where numerous restaurants and events have valet parking b/c street parking so so super nuts here. Hope that helps

The most common custom is to tip the valet when you pick up the car. The going rate is $3-5 per car per time you pick it up. If you want extra consideration such as your car parked in the shade, a quicker pick up time, any special requests, you should tip at drop off and pick up. And if you forget any items in the car and ask them to retrieve it for you, that also is normally tipped.

This is about how I learned.
